Hello, I am new to Mumsnet. I would like to start a discussion on Clairvoyants, psychics, etc. Am I being AUBU to think that they are all charlatans just taking troubled people's money?

Caffe you can express disdain, if you wish, but being full of disdain is not a quality, I personally, would aspire too.

And yes of course the knowledge I do have is available, freely, to other minds on the planet, including scientists - knowledge just has to be sought.

Being disdainful does not help though, IMO, to the knowledge seeking process.

capsium · 03/01/2015 20:44

X post again Balls Smile

New Scientist has lots of interesting articles regarding human perceptions and communications in the plant and animal world. The recent BBC documentaries on Quantum Physics also contained some baffling but fascinating theories on the senses.

BallsforEarings · 03/01/2015 20:51

Thank you Capsium - I am definitely interested in this topic and it will be great to get some interesting reading matter to get my teeth into before I go back to work! Smile

BackOnlyBriefly · 03/01/2015 20:53

capsium, I know we won't agree on the existence of supernatural things, but I think we need to keep the terms straight or it will get confusing to even talk about it.

There are lots of things that we don't know. You said "the more that is learnt, the more you realise how much is not yet understood." and I think that can be shown to be true. That doesn't mean our knowledge is going downhill. It just means our ToDo list is getting longer.

But there is an important difference between not knowing now and something being totally beyond knowing.

"beyond knowing" stuff would be the supernatural (if it existed) and that would include god, magic and so on.

At one time we thought lightning was supernatural and then we learned how it worked. It didn't stop being supernatural. We just realised that it never had been supernatural in the first place.

So far everything that people said was supernatural turned out to be perfectly natural. We've no reason to suppose that the supernatural exists.

If the supernatural does exist then it almost certainly can't affect the real world. If it did then the effect it was having would be measurable.

LadyStinky · 03/01/2015 20:55

I just don't find it appropriate to ridicule a person's spiritual beliefs, they are as entitled to theirs as you are entitled to your own beliefs (or none) so go ahead and ridicule all the billions of people across the globe for having a different opinion to your own if you will, but personally I find that disrespectful.
I assume that this was referring to my previous post(s). However I do not believe that I ridiculed anyone's beliefs.
It appears that you are so ready to be offended by some people who are willing to openly challenge your opinions. If your beliefs were so solid, then they would stand up to criticism.
caffe you're ace!

BallsforEarings · 03/01/2015 20:59

I don't have any particular beliefs Lady, I just DON'T believe in bullying others who think differently to myself and will be saying so!

Not offended in the slightest it's just principles and manners I am defending! Nothing personal to me!

^an article which includes some material concerning cultural variance in perception, Balls.

Back I believe the true nature of the universe exists, regardless of whether we consider it supernatural or not. Supernatural merely denotes how we perceive this truth - it is a human descriptor describing how close we are to understanding truth.

crazypenguin · 03/01/2015 21:01

I've not read to the end of the thread yet, but having lost my DP 8 years ago I can say they are absolute parasites.
scumbags that prey on the desperate and grieving. I wish what they did was a criminal offence. I'd throw away the fucking key once I'd put them ina prison wing with all the granny muggers and burglars that have no regard for the hurt and anguish they leave behind. Bastards.

Ahem.

Blush

smiles sweetly

BallsforEarings · 03/01/2015 21:08

Thanks capsium! Im off to read it! [flower]

BallsforEarings · 03/01/2015 21:10

Sorry capsium I meant Flowers

BackOnlyBriefly · 03/01/2015 21:13

But that's where we disagree, Capsium.

You can say "Supernatural merely denotes how we perceive this truth - it is a human descriptor describing how close we are to understanding truth." and it may be for you, but the word actually means something else.

I don't use 'supernatural' as a descriptor for things I don't understand. I just say I don't understand them. Trust me, it's a long list, but nothing on it is supernatural.

capsium · 03/01/2015 21:19

Back you can see though, your beliefs or lack of them, predispose how you use the word? So this is subjective.

LadyStinky · 03/01/2015 21:22

I don't have any particular beliefs Lady, I just DON'T believe in bullying others who think differently to myself and will be saying so!

Where the buggery was I bullying anyone?? Again a difference of opinion and you get all offended!
This is why you can't have a reasonable debate with some people as they have no reason!

BallsforEarings · 03/01/2015 21:42

You really are not offending me in the slightest but I do find it unpleasant and find capsium to be an intelligent person entitled to her own opinion! She has been deemed 'ridiculous' and 'fatuous' and her beliefs called 'nonesense' by two of you!

I am at liberty to call that as I see it! It is no longer debate when insults are being hurled in my opinion!

BackOnlyBriefly · 03/01/2015 21:54

But the word has a definition.

BallsforEarings don't worry too much about Capsium. She can take on six opponents at once without getting out of breath :)

BallsforEarings · 03/01/2015 21:57

Also, capsium is right, this whole topic is subjective because not one of us knows for sure but I think if a person cares to express their own beliefs at the expense of others' it says a lot about them as a person!

BallsforEarings · 03/01/2015 21:59

Haha I know she can BackOnly - I honestly didn't mean to patronise her, she has my admiration, that's all! Smile

LadyStinky · 03/01/2015 22:04

Balls. I have called no one fatuous, nonsense or ridiculous. Please re-read my comments.
However, I have a feeling you won't as you appear to sticking to your guns and getting offended (albeit on someone else's behalf) without objectively looking at the facts. Which appears to be a symptom of a person who has no logical reasoning.

WineWineWine · 03/01/2015 22:04

No matter what a person chooses to believe, if a skill cannot be proven under controlled conditions, then it's not real.

capsium · 03/01/2015 22:06

Ooh Blush.

You make MN sound like a fight club Back! Grin

capsium · 03/01/2015 22:08

Wine you must live in a very strange unreal world. It sounds more supernatural than mine!

BingBong36 · 03/01/2015 22:09

I have seen many that spoke bollox. 1 told me very specific things about my future that came true. I have a cassette of a recording from ten years ago and it was spot on!!!

BallsforEarings · 03/01/2015 22:23

Lady - I did not say that you said all of those things yourself, you only said the 'ridiculous' comment, I said two of you, yourself and caffe as you know said these, and as I read the thread back that is true to state however it is also true that a person can only speak for themselves so, with that in mind, you have me, however in the context of this argument the two of you seem to be acting 'as one' and, as you must know, to ridicule of people of faith WAS the intention, as clearly stated if you read back both your comments (of which you were keen to validate one another), and I'm afraid that, to me, that does not sit well!

You have repeatedly told me I have no logical reasoning and yet you have no valid evidence of this so I am just thinking - 'oh there you go again labelling and ridiculing people for no good reason', a true debate should not include name calling or labelling IMO!

I am the first to respect both sides of an argument as valid but I do feel remarks of a personal nature towards an opponent undermine the value of a point of view which otherwise I may have respected!

babbityann · 03/01/2015 22:23

Can I ask why you have visited so many Bingbong?

OP posts:
LadyStinky · 03/01/2015 22:44

There's a difference between criticising someone's belief and someone themselves. And to call that bulling is frankly ridiculous as there was no personal insults thrown. Learn to know the difference.
You NOW need evidence for something!?! For me suggesting that you have no logical reasoning. I can only go by the evidence which has been supplied, your posts.
