To think beans are a staple ingredient of a fry up?

DH thinks a traditional fry up should be served without beans. I think it's not a proper fry up without some kind of moisture.

Who's right?

normal yellow flecked banana fried in the same pan as the bacon. Its gives you a sweet salty fry up, so flipping delicious!! In fairness my British DH thinks I'm a bit odd, but still fries my banana for me :)

Notinaminutenow · 31/12/2014 13:54

Warming to the Sausage Square & the fried banana...

chocomochi · 31/12/2014 13:55

Yes to beans and no to tomatoes (fresh, tinned otherwise!).

avocadotoast · 31/12/2014 13:57

I'd always have them, but I don't think they're crucial!

GemmaTeller · 31/12/2014 13:58

Without.

Fry up in our house is sausage (for DH) plus bacon, egg, fried bread (jamie style) halloumi and warburtons white bead.

I love our Saturday breakfast Grin

EmberElftree · 31/12/2014 13:59

What Tattie said! I'd give anything for a wee lorne sausage on a morning roll with brown sauce...

Shockers · 31/12/2014 14:02

No beans!

Tinned toms!

turdfairynomore · 31/12/2014 14:03

Ulster fry=no beans! (But lots of breads!!) Yum!!

Tobeemoree · 31/12/2014 14:12

Hell yeah to the beans for me and DD, hell no for DH. He sulks if there's even a smidge of bean juice anywhere near him. Sometimes I do it just for shits and giggles.

noddyholder · 31/12/2014 14:15

Grilled tomato no beans here although ds has them. I hate tinned tomatoes so revolting they make the toast soggy

Letthemtalk · 31/12/2014 14:18

The only beans I like with a fry up are the one you get in Spain, think canellini fried with garlic and onions with lots of olive oil - delicious.

Perfect fry? Sausage, crispy bacon, black pudding, potato bread, fried egg, beans as above, toast, big mug of tea.

SchnitzelVonKrumm · 31/12/2014 14:23

YABU. Beans look, smell and taste vile.

RL20 · 31/12/2014 14:25

Tobee that made me laugh! Reminded me of one my friends who has a "phobia"'of beans and has done for as long as I can remember! So I've always done the usual things like, send her a birthday card with a picture of beans on for her birthday. Anything novelty with beans on, I buy for her. Just for the sake of it.

I can't believe I forgot tomatoes and eggs from my list!
I've always been funny with textures of tomatoes though. I prefer tinned tomatoes, but I still won't actually eat the chunks, I'll just dip everything else in the juice!
And egg I could eat in any way, but scrambled eggs are a bit too slushy with a fry up I think!

SchnitzelVonKrumm · 31/12/2014 14:25

Yes to egg, crispy bacon, black and white puddings, sausages, grilled tomatoes and mushrooms fried in butter. And fried bread.

SchnitzelVonKrumm · 31/12/2014 14:28

I wouldn't turn down something potato-ey either.

SuperGlue · 31/12/2014 15:04

When I am making it at home it depends on the time of day what does into it, is a more pared down affair if it is for breakfast - sausages, bacon, white and black pudding, fresh tomatoes liberally spinkled with sea salt, black pepper and oregano and grilled. In fact everything is grilled apart from the fried eggs which are gently fried in butter. Add fresh, hot toast, fresh pot of coffee and orange juice - heaven!

This evening we are having 'high tea' for dinner as we still have some breakfast bits and pieces left from Christmas morning so we will have sausages, bacon, black and white pudding, mushrooms fried in butter with black pepper, beans, grilled tomato, and either fried potatoes if I can be bothered to boil some this afternoon OR oven chips from the freezer. Dh and dd will also have toast with this.

Bogeyface · 31/12/2014 15:11

So.......I now have eggs, bacon, sausages, baby plum tomatoes and mushrooms in the fridge!

We are having "breakfast for dinner" tomorrow :)

Tobeemoree · 31/12/2014 15:14

RL20 That's exactly it - a phobia. I wouldn't be so cruel if it were, for example, spiders. Or buttons. Or velvet*. But beans? It's ridiculous.

*I have friends who are phobic of all of these, but I can't serve any of them up for breakfast.

AmericasTorturedBrow · 31/12/2014 15:15

Bacon
Grilled tomatoes
Mushrooms
Eggs
Good quality sausage
Toast

Everything else is superfluous

Tattiebogle · 31/12/2014 15:16

Tattie Scones are another good addition.

OhFrabjousDay · 31/12/2014 15:31

This thread has made me go buy sausages for a fry up tomorrow.

FWIW:

Sausages
Bacon
Beans (to be eaten with the sausages)
Fried tomatoes (to be eaten with the bacon)
Fried mushrooms (optional)

This may be controversial - but - definitely no fried egg. Yuk.

summerdreams · 31/12/2014 16:13

Fried egg fried tomato, mushrooms, bacon, sausages either fried bread fried potato cake or fried potatos I'm a fan of black pudding but hardly ever remember to buy it but ill occasional eat tiniest amount of beans with it if someone's made them but I'm not a fan and would never make them myself.

But saying that I eat 2 pieces of bacon and a egg occasional for a quick lunch so everyone's different

MindReader · 31/12/2014 16:37

Matter of personal taste.

I like: Bacon, Egg, Fried Bread, Grilled Tomatoes, Mushrooms (in that order).

Also: Sausage, Black Pudding, Fried Potatoes (potato scone).

Ds has introduced us to the joys of baked beans mixed with canned tomatoes (a Scout Speciality, I believe...).

melika · 31/12/2014 16:42

1 egg, 2 bacon, 2 sausage, mushrooms fried in butter, beans, tomatoes canned or fresh and gypsy bread!

So yes, beans are a must!

TheRealAmandaClarke · 31/12/2014 16:51

Fry up:
Bacon (smoked), egg (fried), sausage (usage shaped), black pudding, , tomato (preferably canned).
Non negotiable accompaniment: mug of tea (2 or 3)
Optional extras: toast, fried bread, mushrooms, bubble & squeak.
No, no beans there.
Yabu. Grin
