To think beans are a staple ingredient of a fry up?

DH thinks a traditional fry up should be served without beans. I think it's not a proper fry up without some kind of moisture.

Who's right?

BreconBeBuggered · 31/12/2014 12:39

As a vegetarian I should probably keep my nose out of this thread, but I really want to know why anybody would serve tinned tomatoes at breakfast. They look bloody horrible and can only detract from the fryishness of the rest of the plate, surely?
Beans I can take or leave. I'll have some with bubble and squeak later.

drbonnieblossman · 31/12/2014 12:41

White pudding powdery tasting? You've not tried the good stuff. All peppery and luscious!

drbonnieblossman · 31/12/2014 12:43

Agreed, butchers sausages probably the best but not many to the pound.

Sausages generally have to be overcooked for me. Not burned but crispy and a bit chewy-skinned.

BrennieGirl · 31/12/2014 12:43

No to beans with a fry. And NOOOOOOO to tinned tomatoes. They are horrible watery things. I like a fresh tomato fried though.

Here in Ireland we often have potato bread with a fry. It's delicious with a fried egg on top.

grovel · 31/12/2014 12:45

No, no, no, no. Beans are an optional extra. Not a staple.

Bogeyface · 31/12/2014 12:46

I just remembered with the mention of the butchers, ours does the most amazing tomato sausages. They are delicious and perfect with a fry up!

drbonnieblossman · 31/12/2014 12:47

wings what's the flavour of Scotch Dumpling. It looks like it would be malt loafey?

GlitzAndGigglesx · 31/12/2014 12:53

Without beans it's a half job. They MUST be included

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 31/12/2014 12:57

Ha, meant 'lumpy', not jumpy. I can't type today. I like mine on the well done side too. I just find the high-meat content lumpy ones terribly dry and the kids don't like them either.

Tattiebogle · 31/12/2014 13:00

Scottish Dumping is fab, its like a fruit malt loaf or light christmas pudding.

White Pudding is food of the Gods, as is Black Pudding.

Beans with a fry up? No. Eggs and Beans should never be on the same plate.

Haggis with a fry up? Yes. Yes. Yes.

19lottie82 · 31/12/2014 13:02

Beans yes. Mushrooms or tomatoes BOAK

BuggersMuddle · 31/12/2014 13:06

My bacon has just gone in, the water is coming to the boil for eggs and I am blaming MN Hmm Grin

RL20 · 31/12/2014 13:12

A fry up without beans isn't to be thought about! Mine would consist of.. Fried bread, bacon, sausage, beans, hash brown, and some brown sauce Grin NO black pudding though!

shovetheholly · 31/12/2014 13:14

Absolutely with you OP.

Yes to beans, yes to mushrooms, absolutely NO and EW to tinned tomatoes.

This is going to sound really pretentious - sorry - but if you roast cherry tomatoes slowly in lemon-infused olive oil, then put some basil on them, they taste lovely with a fried breakfast. The acidity of the lemon kind of cuts through some of the fatty things like a citrus party in your mouth. I discovered this by accident when a friend bought me some fancy oil, and I mistook it for normal.

OmnipotentQueenOfTheUniverse · 31/12/2014 13:28

Your DH is right, of course.

I am a purist, mind. Bacon (crispy fat), perfectly fried egg and golden toast, job done. Anything else is unnecessary and extraneous. I will consume fried mushrooms, black pudding, a grilled tomato, or even some fried potatoes, if it's put in front of me, but am pretty .

Beans = no but I don't like them anyway.

What is lush, that I had at a hotel buffet brekkie in scotland, is haggis and scrambled eggs MMMMMMMMMMMMMMM so if anyone ever gets the chance then that combo is recommended Smile

Notinaminutenow · 31/12/2014 13:32

No to beans.

No to tinned toms (yuk! when the juice mixes with the egg).

A big yes to black pudding, bacon, mushrooms and poached eggs.

Tattiebogle · 31/12/2014 13:36

Thats what I'd have also Notinaminutenow, but with Haggis if I was in Scotland. But I'd also add leftover spuds fried in the pan for a couple of minutes at the end of it all if I had any in the fridge.

Can't stand tinned tomato. And beans and egg on the same dont even look right let alone taste right.

expatmumsy · 31/12/2014 13:40

No to beans, hard hard no to tinned tomatoes, def no to black pudding or anything similar, sausages are nice but feel out of place

Yes to crispy bacon, yes to fried banana, maybe an egg and toast YUM

Notinaminutenow · 31/12/2014 13:41

Tattie DH loves a fried spud with his & definite yes to a bit of haggis too if with the inlaws.

EmberElftree · 31/12/2014 13:42

As long as the beans do not touch the egg. Serve them in a wee ramekin.

Smoked bacon, sausage square or link, black pudding, white pudding, tattie scone, fried egg, yes to crispy fried potatoes or those crispy fake triangle hash browns.

Brown sauce. Years since I've had a cooked breakfast like that.

Notinaminutenow · 31/12/2014 13:44

Fried banana!!!

What an ordinary banana? Or a plantain? Green banana?

Notinaminutenow · 31/12/2014 13:46

Ember What is a sausage square?

borisgudanov · 31/12/2014 13:49

Baked beans? Bleeeeurgh yuk yuk yuk. YABU.

Tattiebogle · 31/12/2014 13:50

Sausage square is also know as Lorne Sausage and is just sausage made into a square. Its like meatloaf but not like meatloaf if you know what I mean :D

Its fabulous slapped between a roll, a Scottish Roll.
