To think beans are a staple ingredient of a fry up?

DH thinks a traditional fry up should be served without beans. I think it's not a proper fry up without some kind of moisture.

Who's right?

Bacon, eggs, potato bread, soda bread, mushrooms (all fried) and tomatoes (grilled, optional) for me.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 31/12/2014 11:43

I was asked this by an Irish colleague at our annual Christmas do and said that I thought beans were normal in an English fry-up. She said they weren't in an Irish one but that a hash brown, potato bread and fried soda bread were staples there.

I wouldn't ever eat tinned tomatoes at breakfast, I'd drip the juice down my front! Shock

plinkyplonks · 31/12/2014 11:46

YES, YES, YES!! BEANS are an absolute requirement :D

saoirse31 · 31/12/2014 11:48

Always thought beans were English addition to fry. but they're nice. tinned tomatoes- gross. tomato should be fresh and fried!!!

FryOneFatManic · 31/12/2014 11:50

For DP and I, a fry up is: bacon, sausage, fried eggs, fried bread (not toast), mushrooms

Extras for me: fresh, fried tomatoes

Extras for him: black pudding

I'd like to know what white pudding or dumplings are, have seen them mentioned here.

drbonnieblossman · 31/12/2014 11:51

Ermm, no mention of white pudding. Essential component of a cooked breakfast.

livegoldrings · 31/12/2014 11:54

I wouldn't say beans are traditional exactly, but they do go well with a breakfast. Personally I hate eggs so I would have mushroom, some kind of potato, sausage, bacon and beans. Toast and marmalade on the side and a cup of coffee. Yum.

drbonnieblossman · 31/12/2014 11:54

I take that back. Just seen the mention of lovely lovely white pudding. with a fried egg on top. And toast with Lurpak on the side. And bubble.

IHaveBrilloHair · 31/12/2014 11:56

Beans in a ramekin on the side so they don't touch the egg

WellnowImFucked · 31/12/2014 11:59

Oh god I so want fried bread with white pudding now…

formerbabe · 31/12/2014 11:59

What's white pudding?!

Mulligrubs · 31/12/2014 11:59

No beans = crap breakfast! Need beans on my fry ups Smile in the absence of baked beans an extra tomato is acceptable

ninetynineonehundred · 31/12/2014 12:05

Baked beans are essential.
True fact

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 31/12/2014 12:05

Definitely NO baked beans! The baked bean sauce gets everywhere, and the whole breakfast tastes of it. And it soaks into the fried bread and ruins the crispy deliciousness.

I am sorry, JustStir, but your husband is right and you are wrong.

Amethyst24 · 31/12/2014 12:06

A full fry-up is one of the most over-rated meals EVER.

Cooked breakfast should be a bacon and egg or sausage sandwich, scrambled eggs with smoked salmon, or eggs Florentine.

Hate wading through cheap sausages, overcooked bacon, minging beans, leathery toast etc, all on a cold plate.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 31/12/2014 12:14

Beans in a ramekin? I'm currently using the little red pots that contained individual Christmas puddings... I'm so classy! Grin

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 31/12/2014 12:19

I'm still trying to work out how to fry an egg like 'Dexter' does in the opening sequence. Looks lovely, don't like the look of the 'ham' though with that great string of fat on it. Confused

Does ANYBODY know where to buy great tasting sausages that DON'T have lumps in them? I'm finding that the higher the percentage of meat, the lumpier and less tasty they are. I want lump-free nice sausages just like we had in the 70s... [:)]

drbonnieblossman · 31/12/2014 12:20

Amethyst why do you use cheap sausages, overcook your bacon, use minging beans, and serve leathery toast? If you use good quality food, your cooked breakfast will be a culinary delight.

You cannot compare a "traditional" cooked breakfast/fry up to smoked salmon, eggs etc. They are totally different meals. Both delicious in their own right and both have a place on the menu!

drbonnieblossman · 31/12/2014 12:22

If you want cheap shit sausages, use Richmonds. Guaranteed to be as smooth as a baby's bum and contain minimal meat.

I am a fan of Sainsburys Taste the Difference sausages. (in particular the very seasonal apple and cranberry chipolata)

BuggersMuddle · 31/12/2014 12:23

Some kind of moisture required, but we usually have poached eggs.

Our 'mandatory' items are grilled bacon, tattie scones and eggs. Oodles of tea and a glass of fresh orange on the side to cut through the creash are also mandatory Grin

Regular additions are link sausage, grilled tomatoes, baked beans, mushrooms (tinned tomatoes have been used at a push) depending on mood / what's in the cupboard.

Although I will eat all of these things, we never have black / white / fruit pudding or hash browns in the house.

Lorne sausage (slice) and fried bread are the work of the devil hands in Scottish person card

Wanders off to raid the fridge as has not yet eaten breakfast

Bogeyface · 31/12/2014 12:27

Beans have no place on a fry up.

I like cheesy beans on toast, I am not a bean hater, but they just dont "go" on a fry up plate. Grilled tomato for preference or decent quality tinned, I think you need something tomatoey to go with the bacon.

But bean juice just gets everywhere and makes it all taste beany. My mother used to put the fried egg next to the beans and beany tasting egg white is unspeakably revolting.

In our house you get....

Grilled sausages
Grilled bacon
Poached eggs (or scrambled for DS and H)
Tomatoes
Fried mushroom (one of those really big ones)
Hash Browns or fried potatoes

H also has black pudding and he would rather have beans than toms but tough!

however · 31/12/2014 12:29

Beans for sure. But I make my own, that tinned shite is shite.

Bogeyface · 31/12/2014 12:31

however what recipe do you use?

I found a recipe once that used black treacle (molasses) and it was amazing! And true to form I lost it and despite much internet trawling, have never found the one I used, they all seem to have gammon/bacon in them.

Viviennemary · 31/12/2014 12:33

I like beans but not with a fry up. The whole thing is just too soggy.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 31/12/2014 12:37

drbonnie... Well, I'd rather have a 'nice' sausage but, if it's a choice between a 'jumpy' one or a Richard, I'd have a Richard.

I've had one in a hotel recently and it was delicious, comes from a local butcher. Maybe getting a butcher's one is the answer.
