To think nobody will believe it was an accident this time...

...if I'm pregnant again?

NC. Anyway: DS, now five months, was a happy and statistically highly improbable accident. I had a copper coil in and though it had not moved and did not appear in any way defective, he nevertheless turned up. As DP and I were relatively new together, I'm a full-time student and we... aren't married yet, this caused much consternation with our friends and families. As over the years I've often said I'd like to have children relatively young, and DP has apparently said the same, there was some eyebrow raising that it was really an accident.

Anyway, everyone eventually got their heads round the idea, uni have let me take a year out, DS is now the apple of grandparents eye, DP and I have almost got over the shock/ got accustomed to the lack of sleep, and I'm looking for childminders in preparation for going back to studying next academic year. At some point I said to my mother it would be a shame there'd be such a big age gap before the next one (I really want to finish studying and get career established - 6 years before even trying) and she said 'just don't go there', as if I was suggesting taking another year out to have more.

Anyway, I now have a horrible feeling I know what the last four days of enhanced sense of smell and room spinning and terrible nausea feel like. And it's not norovirus. Going to POAS asap but SERIOUSLY. We've probably only dtd about ten times since he was born, and are using durex extra safe ffs! AND I'm breastfeeding. (Awaits barrage of 'you can't rely on that for contraception you know...)

If it comes back positive, WIBU to just tell everyone we've planned it like this as nobody will bloody believe we could have two such 'accidents' in quick succession??

(Fwiw though, dire financial and career and space in our tiny flat implications aside, I'd bloody love another baby Grin. Probably definitely getting ahead of myself though...)

Op I am a ct3 Dr and just back from mat leave-it was a massive faff to arrange and at every turn I was met with blank expressions and an air of 'junior docs don't have babies'. I WISH I'd had mine at med school. There will never be a really good time. Your life, your choice. x

LizzieMint · 29/12/2014 08:49

elspeth, you honestly can't rely on breastfeeding in those circumstances. My 7 year old is testament to that!

Littleturkish · 29/12/2014 09:00

We've had two accidents snd I was sick of people asking about it. On the pill for first and using rhythm method for second (so knew there was a chance- we were being open to the idea of it but not actively trying- if that makes sense!) and I am now 32 weeks so past the point people ask about the planning, thank god.

I hope you get the result you want!

KitKat1985 · 29/12/2014 09:06

Shameless place marking!

SamiBE · 29/12/2014 09:11

Breast feeding acted as a contraceptive for me Grin I stopped at 4 months and went on the pill a few days later. During those few days I fell pregnant Grin it was a big shock and I couldn't help but to laugh especAlly as my son turned 1 a couple of days ago and I'm due in 5 weeks

Itsallabout · 29/12/2014 09:11

MushroomSoup....you just gave me a huge panic reading your post. I thought the chances of me conceiving were almost impossible after early onset menopause caused by cancer treatments. I shall need to re think contraception for the next 10yrs. Thank you

DinoSnores · 29/12/2014 09:12

lizziemint, breastfeeding IS a very successful form of contraception as long as, as elspeth said, some very specific criteria are fulfilled. Google 'lactational amenorrhea method'. It is about 97% reliable, more so than condoms. Obviously, no contraception is 100% as you have got pregnant while BFing (exclusively! On demand? No periods?) but your anecdote doesn't overrule actual facts.

QOD · 29/12/2014 09:20

Come on come on come on ...... Grin

TheEagle · 29/12/2014 09:20

Breastfeeding can provide contraception but as dino says above it's not just about exclusively feeding.

Often you'll need to practise "ecological breastfeeding" - no soothers, co-sleeping, feeding completely on demand - for the lactational amenorrhea method to work.

And as our bodies are all so different, I wouldn't rely on breastfeeding as a contraceptive at all!

Good luck OP

misskangaandroo2014 · 29/12/2014 09:29

My brother = coil. Me = condoms.
So my family would believe you.
Congratulations! you've got lots of career time ahead of you after a child break if you want it. It's your life don't fret!

CurlyLocks87 · 29/12/2014 09:34

Shops opened ages ago! Pee woman!!!

Good luck. Qualify and be a GP. Loads of my friends have. They love it. All extremely flexible and still good money. It's a very good life balance.

I have just read this whole thread and she hasn't updated yet?
I am slightly frustrated by this turn of events!

Mammanat222 · 29/12/2014 10:10

I've been pregnant using condoms and current pregnancy is the result of sex once in a 6 week time scale!

We weren't using contraception so effectively NTNP, although hardly having sex (once in six weeks people!!) Grin

Come on OP, we're waiting!

AlpacaLypse · 29/12/2014 10:12
