We were supoose to get paid yesterday, were given a load of excuses by the account eg "I only process on a Monday now payment will be after". Today there is still no payment in my account. I have no gas, no food and need to get the last of my Christmas shopping.

It's not base transfer, we've had issues before where she hasn't paid until the Thursday (fortnightly pay on a monday). I've emailed and text my boss but no reply. Aibu to feel angry and let down, I work so hard, cover when I can etc.

If you are paid on a set day every other week than that should be the day the money reaches your account so if it's a Monday they have to process on a day in advance in time to get to you by the right day.
If it's faster payments then the previous day or normal Bacs then 3 days.
The only exception should be if that day is a bank holiday then it should get to your account the working day before the bank holiday. Obviously if the processing day is a and holiday then that has to go early - but you wouldn't get it early in that case.

From what you have said earlier on they don't have this planned out as you've been getting paid on different days. They really need to get a routine sorted out,
I would have gentle word with them and the accountant and remind them of your contractual rights.

I have spoken to the owners (well his wife who is also part of the business) and she was very supportive and said she will pass that on and they don't want to lose me. The manager is such a flake really, things fall on us that he should be doing and I put more hours in than him anyway. He's a very difficult character to get on with, very eccentric (not a bad thing if you work hard with it) and I don't trust him. we'll see how it goes, I'm only 25 and I'm not sure if I have the experience to be manager. I have ideas and I definitely organise and listen to the staff better but I wouldn't want to mess up.

YANBU OP. Some people clearly don't get what it's like to live paycheque to paycheque. It's not always a case of "oh, don't use your December pay for Christmas, that's stupid!" - some people have NO choice. If you earn just enough to cover your regular spends (rent, bills, food), you can't save throughout the year.

DP was meant to be paid yesterday but won't get his money until tomorrow. Luckily for us I was paid last Friday so we're okay for money, but if I was paid at the end of the month, we'd be in a LOT of trouble right now.

I hope you get it sorted.

msgrinch · 23/12/2014 13:24

Thanks Grin just keeping my fingers crossed for today if not I will have to take it further and make some major decisions. I budget the best I can but I earn minimum wage, have a ds who's 6 and things crop up. rent, bills etc eat up my wages. I'm doing 50 hours to help out but childcare costs. It's a struggle and I expect to be paid when It's due.

Oh god how awful for you, I know what it's like to be checking the bank constantly.

Your salary is money owed to you and should be paid at the correct time, it doesn't matter one bit what you're spending it on ffs. Some people really are thick as mince. You're entitled to your wage for your hours worked, even if you're spending it on vodka and eyebrow wigs made from unicorn hair!

Why don't you ring the bank, they may be able to tell you if they can see the payment pending?

Goldrill · 23/12/2014 13:41

Just wanted to say: if it's not in at two, maybe contact your bank and ask if they can see it waiting and when it will be in? I have no idea how it works but they used to be able to do this for me when I was in a similar position - and wanted to check my boss wasn't lying!

And... I don't mean to be a downer here, but are they definitely just incompetent or is the business in trouble? I have both worked for and run a business which went under and not being able to pay staff on time is the bottom line - the bit where the fact it's all gone wrong might first become visible. Sorry - it is worth being cautious...

msgrinch · 23/12/2014 13:44

The owners have very very successful careers themselves (don't want to say what as with other information this would completely out me) but very high up careers so have money. I'm hoping that that means cash flow won't be causing this. In terms of the actual business, yes it's struggling, it's very new though (3months).

OP posts:
msgrinch · 23/12/2014 13:50

also if it was due to the business not taking off. I wish they would talk to me as I'd be more than happy to be paid just what I need to cover immediate bills and the rest when they could.

earplugsahoy · 23/12/2014 14:06

I would be fuming if i was you.. What are you going to do

prettywhiteguitar · 23/12/2014 14:07

Is that your overtime ?

RojaGato · 23/12/2014 14:10

Oh MsGrinch

I was hoping this would be celebratory Wine

They should sort out a cash payment for you asap. That is totally unacceptable.

And if it's the manager's fault, formal complaint to the owner's quick smart.

Glad you have some money, but still, that's rubbish.

msgrinch · 23/12/2014 14:10

I'm paid hourly they've missed 4 days off. I'm livid but need to go pay bills. then I'm on the phone to the owners. I've written down all hours deducted tax and ni and this is £179 off.

OP posts:
IDontDoIroning · 23/12/2014 14:12

Partly good news but if you are on nmw it's quite a few hours short so you need to follow that up straight away.

ToomanyChristmasPresents · 23/12/2014 14:16

You were not being unreasonable! I am glad you got at least some of the money and I hope you get the rest ASAP!

naty1 · 23/12/2014 14:17

Not some sort of emergency tax rate? Though assume this would affect previously.
Or hight tax or ni as paid more this month.
Hopefully you have a payslip

SuggestmeaUsername · 23/12/2014 14:19

YANBU - your employer should have paid you on the pay day as per your contract.

It is entirely reasonable if you incur any bank charges or other charges because you have not received your pay on time, that your employer should pay these charges. Speak to your bank to explain the situation.

However, I think many people should manage their cashflow more efficiently. It is a good idea to build up a level of savings over time so that if this situation occurs, you at least have savings to prevent a crisis. easier said than done though I guess with many people.

msgrinch · 23/12/2014 14:21

off to tesco now to get what I need. It's less that £400 for 103 hours. Going to call accounts to check my tax code is ok. oh well its something. It will get us through the holidays. Then something needs to be done. Dps dm used to employ me so may ask if I can have my job back. Thank you all for your help Smile I hope you all have a wonderful Christmas. will update when I'm back.

I agree now I have more income than sickness benefit I need to save and budget. It's just been the transition that has caused trouble.
