They have been together for about 5 1/2 years, they both want to get married one day as far as i can know.

We got married at 19 so perhaps i'm a bit bias but do you think 5 1/2 years is too long to just be 'in a relationship'?

they are 23 and 26.

It really is none of your business. DH and I got married after being together for 12 years and for a lot of that time we didn't even want to get married.

I half expected to open this thread and see it was about me! Same situation as your BIL/His GF and people often ask why we asked married, hasn't he asked me, wouldn't I love to etc...

Fact is, he has asked me 3 times and I've said no because of his intrusive family asking poxy questions like this all the time. YABU.

Common law marriage no longer exists. I think it did once, but certainly not now.

I seem to have wandered through a time warp and into the 1950s.....

Much too young to be married IMO and can't imagine why GF should/would be embarrassed.

I got married in the US. I proposed, we had 25 people there, and there were no bridesmaids. Also we were both 30.

OP are you from the south by any chance?
