..to think that if you've written the Christmas card you don't need to sign it from your DH/P first?

I've noticed this over the last few years - women who I know have written all the family/friends Christmas cards and yet who sign it from Bob, Jane, little Bob, Little Jane.

Why not put yourself first? You wrote the thing. Surely men don't need precedence in card signing? Or perhaps everyone I know writes in age order and it's simply a coincidence that all the DH/Ps are older Hmm

This reminds me of the great
"Who is Person 1?"
debacle when the census happened.

GoTellItToTheMavis · 20/12/2014 16:26

Are men In Charge Of The Cards then Annunziata?

I am heartened to hear though that women sign their named first.

I think etiquette demands that the head of the family is listed first.

Our family doesn't have a head. How do you identify the head of a family?

DH's name comes first, he's the man.

Ok, now I know this is a piss-take!

Neverknowingly · 20/12/2014 16:28

I always do my name first and the woman's name first in the "To" section too. Ladies first of course! Wink

Vivacia · 20/12/2014 16:28

This thread is like stepping in to a parallel universe.

GoTellItToTheMavis · 20/12/2014 16:28

names even.

Oh god yes, the "Who is Person 1?" carry on.

There is an awful lot to be said for one adult households.

I do the same as gym- his friends and family- his name, my friends and family- my name.

GoTellItToTheMavis · 20/12/2014 16:32

Vivacia - that's how I feel whenever I open a Christmas card written by well educated, career/family women who put their husbands first in the pecking order.

I just don't get it at all.

Neither do I. I get a bit cross even thinking that the man is the "head of the family" really?

Same as it's always Mr & Mrs.

Very old fashioned stepford

LatinForTelly · 20/12/2014 16:37

I've always put myself first, so to speak. Recently it occurred to me that perhaps I shouldn't, but then I thought, I write the fuckers!

To my shame, I may have put DH first on the census.

I put myself first on Sleazyjet bookings though [housepoints].

Tobyjugg · 20/12/2014 16:40

In our house, whoever writes the cards puts their name first.

Bulbasaur · 20/12/2014 16:43

I just put DH's name first since that's formal writing etiquette. Nothing bigger than that. I make custom cards so our names are always printed, no writing involved for either of us. Just stuff in the envelope and send.

Typically though, if I'm signing something by hand, my name naturally comes first followed by DH's. All presents I wrapped are from "Bulbasaur and DH".

I think DH does the same thing with his name in front if he's signing it.

It's not something either of us really think about though. I had to go check the gifts I wrapped.

WitchOfEndor · 20/12/2014 16:45

I should probably have put that bit about etiquette and head of the family in quotes or something to clarify that I think it's old fashioned rubbish. I even insisted our joint bank account listed me first because I was annoyed by the banks assumption that DHs name would go first. DH doesn't care either way especially as it gets him out of writing cards

Nanny0gg · 20/12/2014 16:45

I put DH's name first because he's the other person!

It's usual to put your name last in a pair. I would never say me and DH, it would always be DH and me.

So I do the same in cards.

ZombieJenna · 20/12/2014 16:53

For us it's whoever writes the cards goes first - either ZJ, DP & DSD (to my family) or DP, ZJ & DSD (to DP's family). All the cards we've had so far have mum/auntie/etc name first - I guess it's the women in both our families who write the cards Xmas Grin

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 20/12/2014 16:56

I'm with gymboywalton - if it's friends from my 'side', my name goes first, vice versa if they are friends from dh's 'side'.

whitesandstorm · 20/12/2014 16:59

Just as in Mr and Mrs, it's just the way we do things, changing to Mrs and Mr sounds strange tbh and is surely being petty. I put dhs name first on cards depending on who it is to. If it's to my sister for example I'd put my name first, but as a rule I'll put dh first. Don't know why really, maybe I don't want to sound too self important.

cricketballs · 20/12/2014 17:06

Mine goes first, but not because I havee written them, but the sound of names seems to be better when my name is first

SirChenjin · 20/12/2014 17:08

I am the one writing the cards so I sign my name first - ladies first is what DM always used to say.

Head of the family????!! Is this 1952? Grin

workhouse · 20/12/2014 17:18

I write all the cards in our house and always sign my name first, then the kids, oldest first.

I always write "Mum and Dad" too, "Dad and Mum" sounds wrong

confused79 · 20/12/2014 17:23

I do all the cards for this family, so if it's for my side then I'll sign first, and if my partners I'll sign his. Would be weird, I think, writing a card for my bestie and signing it my partner, then me. Especially considering I've known the longest and socialise with her the most.

WhoKnowsWhereTheMistletoes · 20/12/2014 17:30

I put my name first whoever it's for, then DH then DCs, oldest to youngest. I don't generally do cards for DH's side of the family, or his friends, only a few of the closer ones who are "family friends" rather than his friends at work for example. It just seems natural to write your own name first.

MrsMook · 20/12/2014 17:55

Me, DH, DS1, DS2 is the default.
DH first for his family.
Children first for another child.

I write because his writing is hard to read.

Mammanat222 · 20/12/2014 18:17

To his family then I put his name first. Every other card then its my name first.

DoJo · 20/12/2014 18:39

If I'm writing the card, I will often leave a gap for my husband's name to go first because I will write my name and my son's name, so it makes sense to leave a gap at the beginning for him to sign, rather than one between the two names I am writing. So it will be ........., Dojo and Dojunior just for practicality's sake which adds another potential non-paternalistic reason for it into the mix...!
