she's the only person i know that uses full words and sentences on text, by the time she has typed it all out , it would have been quicker to speak on the bloody phone ! sent her a message the other day to confirm meeting up and the cheeky cow, said that she found text speak 'slovenly' and she was asking friends not to use it when texting her wtf?? aibu in giving her the elbow on our plans - was so irritated by her attitude.

She sounds rude, but I always type in full. With predictive text I can do it incredibly quickly. Most of my friends type in full and tbh full on text speak irritates me a lot. Each to their own though - it seems odd to call someone on it!

I don't use text speak in texts I don't find it any easier or quicker and I like any messages I send to be clear and not open to misinterpretation or understanding which can happen with text speak, particularly if you use abbreviations that the recipient doesn't recognise.

Perhaps your friend finds text speak difficult to interpret quickly, but describing it as 'slovenly' is probably a bit harsh.

If you're irritated by her request and unhappy to accommodate it then by all means give her and any plans you had the elbow

i prefer a text to be direct and to the point, 'lunch, 2pm @ julians love mrs, x' she will go right around the houses with it, correcting punctuation and spellings!

I have to agree with her. I'd never say to anyone but I absolutely detest text speak. It was one thing when you were charged per message but there is no need now. I hate it even more when people use it on fb emails etc

I always text using full sentences (as do the vast majority of my friends). For me, it would be slower to do text speak as it doesn't come naturally to me!

But your friend is most definitely being unreasonable. Of course, there's nothing to stop her asking her friends to avoid text speak but I'd imagine the outcome will be that they just won't text her at all.

I consider your friend's comment on your chosen form of writing to be offensive and unnecessary. She sounds a bit pretentious. Where will she stop? Will you have to watch the way you speak in her presence too?

trouble is i am well spoken to the point of being posh, so i'm told, and she certainly is not, nothing wrong with that but she tries to put on the airs and graces a bit, i hardly swear, don't really like it but she effs and jeffs then moans at me because i don't faff with text messages i don't get it at all.

Doesn't matter her preferences. If you can understand what the text says, and she obviously can if she's correcting it, it's done it's job. End of.

You should send her a well structured text telling her that correcting a text she can fully understand is childish, and you did not ask to meet up to eat lunch with a child, therefore you regret to inform her plans are cancelled and you'll be eating with a fellow adult instead.

The text you describe doesn't fall into the boundaries of text speak in my opinion, I thought you'd sent one full of gr8's, etc., so yes your friend is being unreasonable and rather silly.

I'm in my early twenties and everyone i know types correctly. Your text sounds a little "military". As someone has said with predictive text it only takes a second longer I think my friends are worth that second.

Grammar

I never use text speak, I hate it, but I don't insist on my friends not using it. Most of them don't, but I have to admit I do judge the ones who do (a bit) for it. It's just lazy.

I'll put in an occasional "u" or "@" in my texts. Never do the "dat iz ryte" stuff.

I'm with her that's it's horrible to read text speak, but I also don't think your example is text speak.

I also think it's a bad habit to get into, as proven by some posters here on MN who add an "x" at the end of their posts because they're "used to" doing it... As soon as you start doing it as a reflex it loses all meaning and it's time to stop.

That said, she should have handled it much better than that, such as a jovial "it takes me a while to comprehend what's being typed when it's not full sentences" when she sees you in person.

I LOATHE text speak. My SIL will type cum instead of come despite the fact that the effort to type one extra letter will avoid her texts being borderline obscene. 'Yr bro is cumming' bleurgh.

When its full on It takes me twice as long to work out what is being said. If you k ow she doesn't like it then I would make the effort. My nieces do as they know it drives me nuts. however when my mother tries it it does give some amusing results.

Text speak is difficult to understand at first sight, and looks awful. In the days of predictive text, it's also no quicker. Your comment about it bring quicker to "pick up the phone" makes no sense. Nor does your point about her accent. What - so she swears and doesn't speak RP, ergo she also should choose to write incorrectly? It doesn't follow.

I think text speak ( in texts only) is gr8 (!). It shows the ability to adopt the register appropriately to the medium. Text speak in academic essays or business correspondence, however is not so great.

Anyone who corrects a friend's writing, of any description, is just ill mannered.

I never use text speak. Your friend, however, is a pretentious arse and I am willing to bet makes loads of mistakes in her "un-slovenly" messaging... I'd start going through them with a fine toothcomb and pointing them out to her. Loudly.

I have a friend who uses txtspk. Her texts are virtually indecipherable. Personally, I find it rude of her to expect me to have to figure out what she could possibly mean vowel-free word by word rather than her taking a whole minute more to be clear.

I'd reply "loool!!" just to make her head explode.

I cannot use text speak myself. I just can't bring myself to do it but it's up to my friends how they want to text me.

My MIL uses lots of cute icons in her texts. I find it odd but don't say anything.
