she's the only person i know that uses full words and sentences on text, by the time she has typed it all out , it would have been quicker to speak on the bloody phone ! sent her a message the other day to confirm meeting up and the cheeky cow, said that she found text speak 'slovenly' and she was asking friends not to use it when texting her wtf?? aibu in giving her the elbow on our plans - was so irritated by her attitude.

Catsize,

'Nothing like a bit of juxtaposition.'

Full sentences? Aren't sentences meant to contain a verb? The problem is that once one starts picking on others' grammar, it is so easy to find fault. Which is why, in informal communications, such as text, anything goes as long as it is comprehensible.

SecretSquirrels · 17/12/2014 09:34

I also loathe text speak and so do all the teenagers I know. All my texts will be in fully punctuated sentences.
The only person I know who uses it is my 80 year old mother.
It makes me cringe when I see it, I automatically assume (wrongly I am sure) that the user has a poor grasp of English grammar.

'It makes me cringe when I see it, I automatically assume (wrongly I am sure) that the user has a poor grasp of English grammar.'

Yes, a bit like using a comma when a full stop is indicated.

Noellefielding · 17/12/2014 09:37

Wow, I had no idea so many people hated text speak!
I use it like a great slovenly slattern all over my texts, I love it, it feels like the language of the medium. I focus on clarity though, textspeak that isn't clear is indefensible (that now looks like it is spelt incorrectly).

JingleBellSniffer · 17/12/2014 09:38

my teenage sister hates text speak, it is really uncool. the DM posted an article about "the acronyms all parents must look out for" and it had silly ones like LMF6 (lets meet for sex) and lets be honest - I was in the age of MSN messenger. I never, ever saw anyone say that, or said it myself. I was even on MySpace and still no one ever said the silly ones DM published.
No one used text speak anymore apart from parents dads trying to act cool! Grin

mrstiggy · 17/12/2014 09:41

I don't understand teens who use extra letters in text speak. So they miss out the some vowels but then add on a few extra 'e's on the end or somesuch. I can't think of examples off the top of my head I'm afraid but I've tried to read it before and it's virtually unreadable! Why bother shortening words only to lengthen them at random points.
I also hate text speak. I even wrote in full before smartphones as it gives me headache. That said, I do use a few well known forum abbreviations - fwiw, iyswim, hth etc. No random numbers in my words though, it's not pleasant to read.
After all that though you are still nbu to be annoyed at her pulling you up on it. That's just rude really.

WowserBowser · 17/12/2014 09:41

I've never used text speak - so for me it would be harder to text like that. Although I have a very old phone at the moment and it takes me forever to text.

WhoKnowsWhereTheMistletoes · 17/12/2014 09:46

I hate text speak, but I wouldn't pull anyone else up on it.

Catsize · 17/12/2014 09:46

Mostly Larry, but not always.
I will forgive the extra comma you put in your post.

Haushinka · 17/12/2014 09:50

I don't think there was anything wrong with your text, it was easy to read.

She just sounds irritating in general.

WaywardOn3 · 17/12/2014 09:51

If you're a teenager text speak is fine. If you're an adult use your words since you spent your childhood learning them ;-)

I don't understand text speak so the time spent with back and forething texts working out what the original one was about would have been saved if the original didn't use text speak...

Thankfully non of the adults who have my number use text speak except my grandad who loves to use it (we phone each other instead of text)

londonrach · 17/12/2014 09:56

Dyslexic here and i dont understand text speak apart from the obvious. Luckily my friends and family send obvious text.

HelloitsmeFell · 17/12/2014 09:59

I understand why people use text speak for its original purpose, which was to simplify and abbreviate long chunks of text, but I never use it and never have. These days with such sophisticated predictive text, touch screen and user friendly keypads it really is completely unnecessary.

What really irks me though, is when people deliberately misspell words in texts and social media posts, just because they think it's the informal, fashionable thing to do. Confused

Like nite or tonite for example. On average, how many measly hours does someone claw back in their lifetime by adopting daft spellings of words, thereby saving themselves the nanosecond it takes to type three extra letters? Or in the case of tonite only ONE extra letter? Hmm

Icimoi · 17/12/2014 10:05

I do think it's quite rude to reply to someone in text speak when they've taken the trouble to write properly.

Quenelle · 17/12/2014 10:05

How stupid. I don't use text speak but your message was hardly that anyway.

If you had phoned her and said 'Fancy lunch? Meet at 2 in Julian's?" would she have said 'I can't reply to you I'm afraid because you didn't say "Would you like to join me for lunch at Julian's at 2 o'clock this afternoon?'

RiverTam · 17/12/2014 10:07

well your friend was very rude but text speak is annoying. My auntie (in her 70s!) once sent me a text that had so few vowels in it i had to ring her to ask for a translation. And that wasn't me being passive-aggressive or anything, I simply couldn't make head nor tail of what she was saying!

DoesntLeftoverTurkeySoupDragOn · 17/12/2014 10:09

Yes, the difference is, in your mind, 'class'. Middle class educated people use 'FWIW' and not 'gr8'. The reality is that this is just snobbery.

Nonsense. Talk about making a sweeping judgement!

As long as text is clearly comprehensible, why not use the quickest and easiest way of typing it?

Which, with a smart phone, is by using proper English.

DoesntLeftoverTurkeySoupDragOn · 17/12/2014 10:09

In the OPs example, it takes longer to type @ on an iphone than the word at.

WhoKnowsWhereTheMistletoes · 17/12/2014 10:21

I sometimes get weird texts from my mum, who isn't very techy, I'm never sure if she's trying to do text speak or has accidentally switched her phone to Hungarian keyboard or similar.

littlehayleyc · 17/12/2014 10:24

I don't mind a little bit of text speak, or short to the point messages by text. However, I find it extremely annoying when people use text speak in emails or on facebook. Even more annoying, is when they use numbers instead of words/letters. The same people often use no punctuation, and miss out words, making it very hard to read. I don't point it out, and I wouldn't to a friend either though. I just quietly stew about it and shout at the laptop ;)

MorelliOrRanger · 17/12/2014 10:36

Larrygrylls

Yabu to use text speak. Your friend is BU to correct you on it though.

I hate text talk, it's so lazy."

Haha. 'BU'? Not lazy?

Yes and as I said, yabu to call me on it.

Theoretician · 17/12/2014 10:53

This thread prompted me to try out using voice input for composing messages on my Android phone, then for posting here, using both my phone and windows 8.1. Windows voice recognition was useless, possibly because I have a desktop microphone rather than headset, but the phone is almost useable. (Have previously used voice input on the phone only for changing navigation destinations while driving. It's a bit hazardous for that, but for messages, which can be corrected before being sent, it may be useful.)

(This message was typed though!)

TooMuchCantBreathe · 17/12/2014 16:27

i'm trying out my text speak application it's great but i can't work out how to use any punctuation perhaps i'm too old to learn new tricks

whois · 17/12/2014 16:31

LOL ROFL! UR SO FUNNY! C U 2MOROW XOXO

Would probably be my reply :-)

To be fair with an iPhone its quicker to type in full what with predictive text.

My sister (she's 12 years older) went through a stage of using tact speak and I did ask her WTF but I didn't correct it for her...

RattieBagTheOldHag · 17/12/2014 17:04
