she's the only person i know that uses full words and sentences on text, by the time she has typed it all out , it would have been quicker to speak on the bloody phone ! sent her a message the other day to confirm meeting up and the cheeky cow, said that she found text speak 'slovenly' and she was asking friends not to use it when texting her wtf?? aibu in giving her the elbow on our plans - was so irritated by her attitude.

SpidersInTheBox · 17/12/2014 06:37

I hate text speak, find it irritating and don't use it. One friend does and I don't understand a lot of her texts so I text back 'In English?'

Schoolaroundthecorner · 17/12/2014 06:37

I'd reply telling her she was being rude and you know perfectly well how to write correctly but you choose not to as its quicker (or whatever your reasoning is). Cancel the meetup.

sugarman · 17/12/2014 06:40

I agree with School
How very rude of her.

DoesntLeftoverTurkeySoupDragOn · 17/12/2014 06:45

I hate text speak, especially used by adults, but she was rude to mention it in anything other than a jokey manner.

trouble is i am well spoken to the point of being posh, so i'm told, and she certainly is not, nothing wrong with that but she tries to put on the airs and graces a bit, i hardly swear, don't really like it but she effs and jeffs...

How is this relevant at all? All is does is makes you seem snooty and superior.

DoesntLeftoverTurkeySoupDragOn · 17/12/2014 06:50

I think text speak ( in texts only) is gr8 (!). It shows the ability to adopt the register appropriately to the medium

I disagree. I think text speak is becoming irrelevant as more and more people have smart phones with QWERTY keyboards. I've no idea how long a text has to be now to split over into geo, or even if this is an issue now.

For example, to type gr8 is harder than great on an iPhone because you have to type gr then select the number keyboard, type 8, select the alphabet and add the t. I imagine other smartphones are similar.

TooMuchCantBreathe · 17/12/2014 06:56

Even my teens use full words in texts, I have three, they text a lot and I rarely see text speak. Not because of me as I've never told them not to use it - it is designed for texting after all. Tbh you come over as just not really liking her that much. Swearing is valid language so why using it precludes you from using full words in a text I don't know.

She is rude to correct you and is a bit of a tosser to ask her friends not to use it when texting her though. It seems neither of you are doing particularly well in this friendship.

usualsuspect333 · 17/12/2014 06:56

I'd definitely send her a lololol text back.

LightastheBreeze · 17/12/2014 07:00

Text speak is OK if you are using an old style phone, no excuse on a smartphone though, surely it is more difficult.

Treaclepot · 17/12/2014 07:06

I have one friend who uses text speak throughout her texts.I have to confess it always makes me inwardly groan and makes her sound quite thick (which she defintitley isn't) and bit try hard. But would never openly call her for it.

Can't believe most of your friends still do text speak though it feels so dated to me.

bananaramadramallama · 17/12/2014 07:08

Text speak went out with the advent of smart phones and not being charged per text.

You are so 2000&late that it hurts, OP!

Get wiv da prwgrm an sort yr text in style out your da won with da problum but she a dik cuz she currected you innit xx

ArthurSHappeyChristmas · 17/12/2014 07:10

I think you'll find it's grammar OP... Sorry couldn't resist!
And I'm with your friend... Text speak is very annoying.

Bartlebee · 17/12/2014 07:11

I can't abide text speak. I picked up my friend the other day for her slightly embarassing use of 'u' in a text. Grin

Icimoi · 17/12/2014 07:11

I don't understand why you think text speak is more direct and to the point than ordinary language? To take your example, it's just as direct to write "Lunch at 2 pm at Julian's. Love, Mrs" and is actually more comprehensible. These days the use of text speak is a bit juvenile. But no, I wouldn't pick a friend up on it - though I would hope she'd work it out for herself that it's time to write properly.

Hakluyt · 17/12/2014 07:14

Extremely rude of her to point it out. But it it so incredibly irritating I can't help having sympathy with her!

Particularly with your "posh" and "airs and graces" and "effing and jeffing"

ShipwreckedAndMerrilyComatose · 17/12/2014 07:19

trouble is i am well spoken to the point of being posh, so i'm told, and she certainly is not, nothing wrong with that but she tries to put on the airs and graces a bit

You all sound like Hyacinth Bucket with a phone!!

MorelliOrRanger · 17/12/2014 07:26

Yabu to use text speak. Your friend is BU to correct you on it though.

I hate text talk, it's so lazy.

Lweji · 17/12/2014 07:27

You are both being unreasonable.
But she may have trouble reading txt speak. I do. It takes me longer to decipher, as I am a fast reader who recognises rather than spell out words.
It may be ok for you, but it's equivalent to me asking a South American friend to speak English because I find it easier to understand than Spanish. (English is not my first language).

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 17/12/2014 07:28

Bottom line is you don't criticise your friends, but accept them as they are, unless they are being hurtful to you.

So she is BVU.

BitOutOfPractice · 17/12/2014 07:28

I agree with your friend op but I would have the nerve to say it. I hate text speak. I cannot imagine it saves more than a nanosecond and now that most phones have keyboards and predictive text it's just unnecessary.

And fwiw I don't have any friends who use text speak.

LightastheBreeze · 17/12/2014 07:30

Text speak was meant for the old style phones which didn't have a keyboard as it was quicker.

ParrotNoya · 17/12/2014 07:35

Anyone still typing out messages needs to start using Siri (or whatever). I wouldn't dream of typing texts out. Typing is soooo last year.

Txt spk is ok if u hav a non smart fone. I no a few ppl who hav old fones. Xx

CatsCantTwerk · 17/12/2014 07:40

I have to agree with your friend. There is no excuse with the phones nowadays to ever use text speak. Its horrible.

Dolly80 · 17/12/2014 07:42

I think her reaction is a bit rude. She doesn't have to like it but she clearly understood what you meant. Although the person who is texting 'cum' instead of 'come' definitely needed to be corrected!

Out of interest, do people think acronyms in texts are ok? My mum would consider that 'text speak' even though the general consensus here seems to be that it isn't. For example, this is in AIBU and Mumsnet is generally littered with them, fwiw, imo, wtf and so on.

ParrotNoya · 17/12/2014 07:43

Grin BitOutOfPractise Looool, @ ur use of FWIW in ur post.

It was on purpose right???? Confused

ParrotNoya · 17/12/2014 07:46

wtf, iyswim, fwiw, btw etc are definitely text speak.
