Including my MIL who clearly didn't appreciate being asked!

I do not wish to wear other people's slippers- even if washed- that really is Hyacinth Bucket!

Mehitabel6 · 17/11/2014 19:30

I will take off my shoes- I will not wear other people's slippers.

Wishtoremainunknown · 17/11/2014 19:31

You don't have to wear them. It's why it's an offer.

And yes ofcourse I wash them - I don't offer guests dirty slippers.

Purplepixiedust · 17/11/2014 19:32

I have never ever been offered slippers! Who the heck has spares? Do you keep a range of sizes or just generic mules like in hotels.

I have from experience decided I am not a cream carpet person (i accept some peiple are). In fact I have been systematically changing them all to wood or laminate since moving here. I love floors you can sweep or wipe.

ZeViteVitchofCwismas · 17/11/2014 19:32

Where are your visitors coming from if they are turning up at your door in mud and poo stained shoes? Do your visitors have to negotiate a field of cows or the pavements of Paris before they arrive at your allowed portals?

Most sensible people who always keep shoes on normally would take the off before entering your home, should the shoes be dirty! Even if you have not asked.

I dont know who some of you are friends with if they would really tramp through your house in shoes covered in shit and cow dung?

Purplepixiedust · 17/11/2014 19:33

Eww and the thought of wearing slippers previous guests have worn, yuck!

Mehitabel6 · 17/11/2014 19:34

Don't even offer them!

ZeViteVitchofCwismas · 17/11/2014 19:34

I love floors you can sweep or wipe same here.

I have some light weight cotton rugs I can wash easily and can roll up in extreme wet weather...easy peasy and a dark rug thats quality and made to last..and wipe able floors.

I want a house that works for me, not me stressing and working for it.

Wishtoremainunknown · 17/11/2014 19:34

Generic ones ! As I said most people are happy just to take shoes off. I just kept them as spare and as I said my mum likes to wear them.

I probably would only offer to a friend or family member not other guests !

Gileswithachainsaw · 17/11/2014 19:35

And yes, you are prioritizing carpets over guest comfort

OH FFS. The "guests" stay fir a couple of hours then puss off back to tenor own clean houses without a second thought to their poor host who's made to feel a complete cow for daring to ask some up herself/himself visitor to not walk through the house in shoes that have been outside and walking over god knows what.

Where's your being a good guest and not being a filthy cow who doesn't give a shit what state her friends carpets are in. Do you wipe your arse with money? Because carpet cleaners aren't cheap and neither are new carpets. And if that's not something that's ah automatic thought then you have more money than sense.

TheAlias · 17/11/2014 19:35

Giles, do the only houses you ever go to belong to your best friends?

Never a new neighbour, a DC's school friend, a colleague, the person you hope to sell insurance to...?

Wishtoremainunknown · 17/11/2014 19:35

Cheers for the advice there..

If anyone thinks it's rude that they are being asked to remove shoes they are always welcome to not visit my home.

squoosh · 17/11/2014 19:37

Maybe some people have those bowling alley racks set up in their porch and the guests get to pick a pair.

To ask visitors to take their shoes off before coming into my home?

Leak proof boot covers for the totally paranoid

ApocalypseThen · 17/11/2014 19:38

If you're really that bothered, provide shoe covers.

Are shoes some kind of biohazard?!

We've just moved and paid a Hell of a lot of money for new carpets, so either take your shoes off or don't come in.

Why would anyone feel uncomfortable with such a grudging welcome? Why buy carpets that make you feel like you'd rather not have people around? Homes aren't museums.

Wishtoremainunknown · 17/11/2014 19:38

squoosh how did you get in my home to take that photo ? Wink

Mehitabel6 · 17/11/2014 19:38

After reading all these MNetters who put carpets before people I have asked if I should take them off, but every single one has said to keep them on so I have given up asking! ( they are clean, had I had a muddy walk I would take them off!)

squoosh · 17/11/2014 19:38

Those disposable shoe covers scream 'crime scene' to me rather than 'come on in and have a glass of wine'.

Wishtoremainunknown · 17/11/2014 19:39

I didn't pay for my carpets. My landlord did - I had no say in it and would prefer to not have to pay for damage if I move out.

Mehitabel6 · 17/11/2014 19:39

I can't see that I would visit someone who offers slippers more than once!

squoosh · 17/11/2014 19:39

You keep them scrupulously clean Wishtoremainunknown!

Wishtoremainunknown · 17/11/2014 19:40

I do ! That's because they are for guests don't you know. Wink
