Including my MIL who clearly didn't appreciate being asked!

Those disposable shoe covers scream 'crime scene' to me rather than 'come on in and have a glass of wine'.

Grin they scream all sorts to me squoosh as well as putting into pictures the paranoia of the shoe off brigade

Wishtoremainunknown · 17/11/2014 19:41

Probably just as well mehi

MrsCampbellBlack · 17/11/2014 19:41

It is rude and common [channels Jilly]

Honestly, who in their right mind has cream carpets downstairs?

MrsCampbellBlack · 17/11/2014 19:42

Unless it is a rented house which I understand more.

And my god, if there is one phrase I hate on here it is 'your house your rules'. Some people really need to think about how to be a welcoming host.

Wishtoremainunknown · 17/11/2014 19:42

My bloody landlord mrs how thoughtless of him.

MrsCampbellBlack · 17/11/2014 19:43

Well it is pretty stupid of a landlord to be honest but when I rented I had to get the carpets professionally cleaned anyway. But suspect we cross posted.

Wishtoremainunknown · 17/11/2014 19:43

Yes I think we did. I've done well so far they are still creamish.

ZeViteVitchofCwismas · 17/11/2014 19:44

I know of one house where paranoia about cream and persion carpets and germs is rife, how I would love to turn up in those medical shoe covers.

In fact going to the house really requires a full ebola suit such is the worry about what damage hosts will do.

Mehitabel6 · 17/11/2014 19:46

I know a woman who wouldn't let her grandchildren past the kitchen! Her carpet and chairs were too precious for touching! ( naturally she wasn't visited much!)

BoffinMum · 17/11/2014 19:46

I offer guests a basket of hand made felt artisanal slippers so they can get in touch with their chakras and keep the outside from penetrating my sanctuary.

ZeViteVitchofCwismas · 17/11/2014 19:46

I cant stand this worry and panic over cream carpets.

Gileswithachainsaw · 17/11/2014 19:47

I take my shows off in people's houses. I wouldn't be so presumptuous as to think. I had the right to dent their laminate with spike heels or mark their carpets with my shoes.

It's manners.

I've never felt uncomfortable doing so I've never needed asking. Nor have i witnessed anyone else be asked in such a way that a regular person would be offended.

Are your shoes like samson's hair? Take them off and you can't function?

Bartlebee · 17/11/2014 19:47

I have to say, I would find this weird and quite unwelcoming.

What if you have guests for a party or dinner? The idea of everyone getting all glammed up and then padding around shoeless seems really odd. And older guests? All a bit undignified.

As for wearing pre-worn slippers - yuck!

I have heard about this famous basket of artisan slippers before.

Wishtoremainunknown · 17/11/2014 19:47

Ooh boffin where do you buy them ? They sound great ! Grin

Purplepixiedust · 17/11/2014 19:49

Ahh you wash them. Fair enough.

Wishtoremainunknown · 17/11/2014 19:49

I don't really have room for dinner parties. I don't even have room for a dinning table so it's never come up.

ZeViteVitchofCwismas · 17/11/2014 19:50

medical shoe covers are the way forward you keep your shoes on, their floor stays clean. you look silly they look even more stupid for putting you throught it Grin

squoosh · 17/11/2014 19:50

Gileswithachainsaw but you are assuming that everyone else sees taking shoes off as being 'good manners'. I'm happy for a friend to kick off their shoes if they want to do so but would find it hugely over familiar if someone I didn't really know did this.

ZeViteVitchofCwismas · 17/11/2014 19:52

I had the right to dent their laminate with spike heels or mark their carpets with my shoes.

I never came across laminate and all its problems until met Mil. Same with cream carpets et al.

I got to 26 and been in lots of extremely lovely houses without being exposed to this phenomenon.

I really could never ever see myself buying a floor that literally people couldn't walk on Confused

Bogeyface · 17/11/2014 19:52

My grandma had a rule "What would you ask the Queen to do?" If it wasnt ok to ask the Queen to do it then it isnt ok to ask anyone else to do it!

So no, I dont think its ok to ask guests to remove their shoes. Either buy a carpet cleaner or dont have guests!

Gileswithachainsaw · 17/11/2014 19:52

See id find it over familiar and cocky if someone assumed they were too good to remove their shoes

Mehitabel6 · 17/11/2014 19:52

I most definitely want people to keep their shoes on in my house. Very rude of them to take them off if asked not to.

ZeViteVitchofCwismas · 17/11/2014 19:53

I agree squoosh know plenty i would rather keep shoes on.

Gileswithachainsaw · 17/11/2014 19:53

You can walk on them. Just not on shows or attire that will cause damage.
