to hate smokers

onemiddlefinger · 14/11/2014 13:15

I don't actually hate the people (well, not all of them anyway), but I find it so disgusting walking though someone's cloud of smoke. There was just a woman having a cigarette next to the door of my office building and there is no way for me to enter the building other than though hercloud of death! And that happens frequently. Would IBU to bring this up with our office manager and ask for this to be banned?
Actually I wish all smoking in public could be banned, or at least in all bus stops and doorways that have people coming in and out of. In fact they should have designated areas only and those areas should be easily avoidable by others. But I don't suppose this will happen anytime soon...

I still love the smell of fags. I miss it greatly if I'm honest...

Well ... we can unite on the smoking.

The other is a smell I never got to like. Sorry! Much better for your health, though.

Topseyt · 14/11/2014 17:11

I am not a smoker and never have been.

What I can't stand though is the anti-smoking brigade coming over all sanctimonious about smokers.

Do I hate smokers? No. I grew up with them because my parents are dyed-in-the-wool smokers. So are a number of our wider family. If anyone is suggesting I ought to hate smokers then it is almost like suggesting I should hate my parents. I don't and I never will.

We don't allow smoking in our house, but family smokers who want to visit can smoke in the garden provided they do not litter it with fag ends (they never have).

Walking past smokers in the street or in doorways has never bothered me at all. It is just a few split seconds and not worth a whole lot of hysteria.

WorraLiberty · 14/11/2014 17:18

Cloud of death?

Really? In the open air in the middle of November, when the breeze immediately disperses the 'cloud'?

I don't smoke and I really don't get the MN hysteria about it.

Thank goodness I don't know so many drama llamas in real life.

fromparistoberlin73 · 14/11/2014 17:22

actually. I am trying to cut down massively- but I am still a smoker-

but I do think there should be rules against smoking outside certain public places, as today exiting a busy station I passed at least 6 smokers and its not on really for others to have to inhale it.

I also think that by reducing the placse people can smoke it WILL reduce smoking, and increase vaping.

I now no longer smoke at work, its just to shameful to stand outside my building and have colleagues see me (middle manager) puffing

I basically smoke in my garden! thats it

as I get it I REALLY look forward to my evening fag

limitedperiodonly · 14/11/2014 17:59

We pink-lunged people who have never smoked should hunt the filthy bastards down.

Celestria · 14/11/2014 18:24

I vape now too, smell of cherry Grin give it time, next us vapers will be in the firing line. Smile

LoisWilkerson1 · 14/11/2014 18:30

cloud of death Grin

ghostspirit · 14/11/2014 18:50

what i hate is when i see mums with pushchairs holding the pram handes with a fag in their hand/mouth. I also hate it when i see mum bending down to do their childs coat up. with a fag in her mouth. of course them things have nothing to do with me at all and dont effect me in anyway what so ever. just bugs me...

They have just banned smoking outside my childs school good hated walking through the smokers.

bodhranbae · 14/11/2014 18:58

I still love the smell of fags

Fags no but pipe smoke yes. And cigars.

Yes smokers are a pain in the arse. But I was one for 20 years so I just hope they'll escape from its evil clutches too. I watched so many relatives die of lung cancer and emphysema.

HereBeHubbubs · 14/11/2014 19:00

The 'anti-smokers brigade' should carry on, as far as I'm concerned. Pressure like that brings results. The government will never ban smoking as it's income brings in more tax revenue than what it costs the NHS to treat smoking related diseases.

My 45 year old partner has just had a heart attack. He smoked. He stopped immediately after his life saving emergency heart attack surgery. Until then, I had no idea smoking caused heart attacks. Vape cigs also cause heart attacks.

I haven't any sympathy for smokers. You carry on killing yourself, setting your children a disgusting health example and costing the NHS billions each year. If it makes you feel good.
I don't understand how smokers aren't just ... ashamed ... of their habit.

Celestria · 14/11/2014 19:09

That didn't take long!

ByTheWishingWell · 14/11/2014 19:14

I dislike people being inconsiderate. I have no issue with people who smoke and are considerate of others.

Jolleigh · 14/11/2014 19:15

Vapers are already in the firing line Celestria...I mainly vape nowadays as I've been using it to get off fags but I get comments and dirty looks regardless of which I'm using.

Yes, smoking is bad for people, but the vast majority of people including smokers are considerate. And inconsiderate people are going to piss others off whether they smoke or not. It's a consideration issue, not a smoking one.

As a previous poster said, smoking will not be banned as it generates far more money for the government than is needed to treat smoking related illnesses. In other words, non-smokers, other people's smoking actually funds some services that benefit you.

RE vaping...it's getting a decent amount of stick itself. There is so much ignorance surrounding it, mainly propaganda fed by, wait for it...the tobacco companies, because they're losing out to people quitting smoking.

Jolleigh · 14/11/2014 19:21

HereBe...vaping causes heart attacks? Many, many studies suggest otherwise.

Err... "it's (Sic!) income brings in more tax revenue than what it costs the NHS to treat smoking related diseases" but "costing the NHS billions each year". Do make up your mind.
Obesity costs the NHS much more than it brings in revenue, but if you try to tell someone on MN they are fat it would cause an outcry, although they do kill themselves, set their children a bad example and cost the NHS billions. People who drive cars kill others with their CO2 emissions, walking through someone's cigarette smoke is nothing compared to just walking by the side of the road.
The anti-smoking brigade can be as sanctimonious as they like, unless they live a blameless life they should think twice about throwing the stone.

bialystockandbloom · 14/11/2014 19:35

Hanging's too good for 'em, I say. I think all smokers are evil sociopaths. All of them. Every single one.

Just think, all those years when they couldn't cluster outside buildings waiting for their chance to blow smoke into the faces of passing children.

"Designated areas" you say? Oh wait...

Celestria · 14/11/2014 19:37

That's exactly what it is. The more people that start vaping the more the tobacco companies lose out. Vaping does actually carry heart risks. That is true. The extent isn't known though and studies suggest so far that is a marginal risk unless a vaper already has heart issues.

Just because it's smoking bingo, I have to share my air with exhaust fumes. I want them banned. I might start a petition. Children have to live by main roads and lung and chest issues are substantially higher in high traffic areas. Stop driving cars, the fumes of death Grin not to mention the amount of road traffic accidents.

(Bingo)

limitedperiodonly · 14/11/2014 19:40

The government will never ban smoking as it's income brings in more tax revenue than what it costs the NHS to treat smoking related diseases.

Does it? HereBeHubbubs. Can you show that?

I believe the amount of smokers in Britain is about 20 per cent.

I'm not a smoker and never have been.

While you're looking up the figures for how much smokers cost the NHS as opposed to how much they pay in, can you also factor in drinkers, diabetics, people suffering industrial diseases, overweight people, people with hiv, warts, those who chop off the end of their fingers while trying to copy Masterchef, people who fall off motorbikes or horses or get hit by taxis while texting their mates, people who get leukaemia or brain tumours or bowel cancer...

lurkernowposter · 14/11/2014 20:50

Onemiddlefinger, the particulates being spewed out by diesel cars present a much bigger risk to your health than the small 'cloud of death!' You have to spend all of two seconds walking through. I suggest you ask your office manager to ban cars from your car park first on health and safety grounds.

Then move onto having smokers crucified for daring to smoke outside in the open air.

fromparistoberlin73 · 14/11/2014 21:51

herebe

I am ashamed!!! its embarassing. smoking is so NOT my brand any more. I am ashamed, its a weakness thats why I try my hardest to only smoke in my garden, solo. plus if i get cancer I am am going to feel so fucking guilty

get cancer = shit
get cancer when a smoker = shit + no sympathy + guilt

Puzzledandpissedoff · 14/11/2014 21:58

Vape cigs also cause heart attacks

Link to evidence, please? Maybe with a focus on the heart-attack-inducing effects on bystanders?

Wombat22 · 14/11/2014 22:16

I'm not a smoker but don't get all this hysteria. Campaigns managed to get smoking banned in pubs and other indoor places, yet there are people here moaning about smokers sitting outside premises. Don't sit out there with your kids! You got what you wanted, a smoke free environment indoors so sit in it ffs Confused

Quangle · 14/11/2014 22:20

I have never smoked ever in my life and I am really glad there's a smoking ban indoors. But outside? Really to me it's not that big a deal and I love making a big deal about things. It all feels a bit tribal tbh and a reason to be a bit us and them.
