AIBU?

to hate smokers

I don't actually hate the people (well, not all of them anyway), but I find it so disgusting walking though someone's cloud of smoke. There was just a woman having a cigarette next to the door of my office building and there is no way for me to enter the building other than though hercloud of death! And that happens frequently. Would IBU to bring this up with our office manager and ask for this to be banned?
Actually I wish all smoking in public could be banned, or at least in all bus stops and doorways that have people coming in and out of. In fact they should have designated areas only and those areas should be easily avoidable by others. But I don't suppose this will happen anytime soon...

When I lived in California, there was a law that prohibited smoking within so many feet of public buildings. Maybe it just applied to LA, I can't remember, but it seemed a good idea and I'd love it over here, stopped smokers clogging up the entrances!

Yanbu! I wish it was banned in all public spaces. There is a lovely cafe in my town which is mainly outdoor seating, however it is completely ruined when someone sits next to you and lights up. I even had some bloke tell me off for sitting with my baby in the 'smokers part' ie outside. No one was outside smoking at the time until he came along. Don't get me started on doorways!

You probably realise YABU to hate all smokers.

Plenty of times I've stood in the wind and rain outside work because the small space allocated to smokers (away from the entrance) is full. I wouldn't dream of smoking at the entrance to the building to avoid people having to walk through the smoke and it's my choice to go outside to smoke so I don't feel hard done by standing in the rain either.
I take every measure possible to avoid smoke going near others, e.g. I won't smoke outside if it's in a crowded outdoor space and blowing smoke on people couldn't be avoided.

Although it's probably meant with nice intentions (but I'm not sure Hmm) I don't need anyone's pity for smoking, I doubt many smokers do. I've cut down drastically recently so I think I'll be quitting fairly soon anyway.

I don't get any extra breaks either (nor would I expect them) if that helps.

It's not just LA. I'm in Cali right now and I love the fact I rarely smell cigarette smoke when I'm out and about.

just let your manager now what is going on so they can circulate an email about where it is appropriate to smoke. I had a colleague who was smoking in the vestibule of our building last year and the email worked a treat. The manager said it was a result of a H&S audit and no one knew who complained.

I'm in Canada and you can't smoke within 6m of doorways. Poor fuckers, it's freezing out there which is why I gave up

Like I said I don't really hate all of them, just the ones who's Cloud of Death i'm submitted to. Maybe it's also the fact that i'm pregnant but the smell just makes me feel physically sick (although there is not much that doesn't at the moment).
Also stepping into a lift after a smoker has just used it coming back from smoking and not realising until the doors are already closed.
Might start sniffing lifts before getting in now...

People who smoke in bus shelters drive me crazy! Every morning I end up stood in the cold because I don't want to breathe in their smoke (or smell of it).

I don't hate smokers. I smoked for many years, gave up a few years ago, it was hard, but the thing I miss most is having a chat with the other smokers at work whilst having a fag. Lovely people, every single one of them. If you can't see past the cigarette smoke, that's your loss.

hotfuzzra I agree. Let's start a fashion for using scarves or at least hands to cover noses when near smokers. I do it myself anyway and they might then get the idea that we don't like their contribution to the air we breathe.

'Cloud of death' is perhaps a leetle ott, but I wish some smokers would realise how bloody revolting it is for others to have to walk through their stinky fug. It clings, people!

I'm sure the rules on smoking will be in line with some US states eventually.

You probably aren't old enough to remember smoking beagles OP but maybe we should do this to them.

I've never smoked but people with your attitude annoy me.

Around 20 per cent of people in Britain smoke these days. Some of them cluster round doorways and in bus shelters. I still fail to see the health hazard.

YABU to bring it up with manager and not ask the woman directly.
YANBU to not want to walk through her cloud.

Is there anywhere else for her to go, some employers only allow a couple of mins so workers can't go too far away.

I do wonder how all the complainers would have coped when you were allowed to smoke anywhere.
Strange how you didn't hear them moaning then, maybe because they knew nobody cared what they thought.
Maybe all smokers should go back to not caring and blow it in their faces and give them something real to complain about.
Most smokers I know do care about others, its rare to find one that doesn't now, yet all are still bloody vilified.

Oh FFS.

The smell from briefly passing people smoking outdoors doesn't cling.

What clings is people smoking habitually indoors. That doesn't happen any more.

I've always been a non-smoker and I can remember before the ban in 2005 when it did. I worked in offices that were a perpetual fug, planes and trains were smoking and non-smoking and if you wanted a social life you had to breathe cigarette smoke and put up with people accidentally stubbing their fags on your clothes.

I'd stand under the shower in the morning and wash my whole body, especially my hair because the smell of it around my nose made me feel sick.

I didn't like it but put up with it for the sake of a working and social life.

That doesn't happen any more.

Grin Love the cloud of death.

Round here you can't smoke in bus shelters anyway (though, actually, smoke outdoors clings the same way smoke indoors does, if you're in it long enought).

I've never been a smoker, but I must admit passing someone who's smoking somewhere breezy outside is rather nice - I like the smell. I can hardly be the only person who feels that?

I'm a non smoker and I actually like the smell of fags ... Possibly rustling up happy childhood memories? Back in the 70s all my parents friends smoked around us kiddies!

The 1 second you are walking past, I would just hold my breathe!

I'm not too worried about cancer from passing through the stink-but the reek and litter is filthy.

no sympathy at all-plenty of help to cure the addiction. Or just walk further while you still can. a bit of wind direction awareness would be good too.

BTW yes you still reek when you come back indoors. and use a bin for your dog-ends, you idle skank.

There must be others like us. Is here a safe place to confess how very deeply I breathe when walking past the student houses up the round? I like that smell too ;)
