to hate smokers

onemiddlefinger · 14/11/2014 13:15

I don't actually hate the people (well, not all of them anyway), but I find it so disgusting walking though someone's cloud of smoke. There was just a woman having a cigarette next to the door of my office building and there is no way for me to enter the building other than though hercloud of death! And that happens frequently. Would IBU to bring this up with our office manager and ask for this to be banned?
Actually I wish all smoking in public could be banned, or at least in all bus stops and doorways that have people coming in and out of. In fact they should have designated areas only and those areas should be easily avoidable by others. But I don't suppose this will happen anytime soon...

Ta Offilly, not had one all day. I've always been too close to a door so didn't know what to do Wink.

WorraLiberty · 14/11/2014 23:30

I haven't any sympathy for smokers. You carry on killing yourself, setting your children a disgusting health example and costing the NHS billions each year. If it makes you feel good.
I don't understand how smokers aren't just...ashamed...of their habit.

Wow! Do you wear the same judgey knickers when it comes to obese people and people who for whatever reason, are addicted to alcohol/other drugs?

Like a parent slowly killing themself and setting a bad example to their children is ever going to make them feel good?

I think you've hoiked your judgey knickers up so far, they must be blocking oxygen to your brain...

Same old same old. Let's attack the smokers and not the government that allows cigarettes to be sold despite the well known health risk.

Can't speak for all smokers but most start as young teens. Who's fault is that? And then, it's an addiction. An addiction that smokers fight for the rest of their lives.

HereBeHubbubs · 15/11/2014 00:12

Jolleigh Yes, from the horse's mouth. The heart surgeon explained that the nicotine in e cigs still causes damage.

Jolleigh · 15/11/2014 00:18

Ah, the nicotine I can understand. I thought you meant the PG and VG in the various fluids.

Many vapers do work their way to the 0% liquids though...the flavour is loads nicer without the nicotine. I'm down to a 6mg liquid now...though I'm a bit on edge Grin.

WorraLiberty Overweight people can have reasons that understandably prevent weight loss, such as emotional trauma, depression, physical incapacity to exercise because of existing health conditions, etc. so no, I wouldn't say I'm judgemental in that area.

Smokers however, have only themselves to blame for their ultimate poor health.

Jolleigh · 15/11/2014 00:25

And the fact that addiction is a physical thing rather than a"why don't you just stop" thing?

Jolleigh · 15/11/2014 00:26

Emotional trauma and depression cause people to eat but it's inconceivable that it could also cause them to smoke as a coping mechanism?

EatShitDezza · 15/11/2014 00:26

I find smokers are friendlier people especially on a night out. I make loads of friends while having a cig then!

Personally as a smoker, I don't give a shit if people hate or pity me. Go ahead, I'll be too busy lighting a cig to notice Grin

If I'm going to get poorly or die it won't be due to my smoking. I know many of non smokers who have died from apparently smoking caused illnesses.

If I'm going to die then its going to happen whether I smoke or not.

WorraLiberty · 15/11/2014 00:34

Oh come on now, give your head a wobble and think about what you're saying.

When people experience emotional trauma, depression etc they often turn to drugs and alcohol as well as food to fill that ever present hole.

But you only judge those who turn to nicotine?

This is a personal question so feel free not to answer it, but are you perchance overweight? Have you ever turned to food for comfort rather than nicotine?

I only ask because you picked up on the weight part of my post rather than the alcohol/other drug part.

Many people are battling different demons and costing the NHS a lot of money/setting their children a poor example as a result of that.

Fine if you're a hard faced person who lacks any kind of sympathy/empathy/understanding, but I'm confused at how you pick your areas to be judgemental in?

ItAllGetsBetter · 15/11/2014 00:40

I kind of get your point OP but what I don't get is why people have to be so narrow minded. I'm sure plenty of people object to things you do in your life, everything now a days has some sort of negative knock on effect.

At the end of the day, it happens, people smoke it's been that way for a very very long time and it's not going to stop any time soon. Yes it's inconsiderate to behave the way SOME smokers do but, no need to come out with pitchforks and torches.

MyBaby1day · 15/11/2014 00:40

YANBU, I can't bloody stand the habit, the government should be doing a LOT more about protecting us from this assault on our lungs, most of them are super selfish too! Angry

Fabulassie · 15/11/2014 00:44

Since I started vaping and quit smoking for good, I have found myself increasingly intolerant of smoking. I don't mean that I go after them and give them grief (many of my friends smoke.) I just mean that the smell disgusts me and I get very annoyed when I'm forced to breath it.

I do empathise with the addiction, but with vaping being cheaper and more pleasant than inhaling the smoke from burning tobacco leaves, there's really no excuse to smoke.

WorraLiberty · 15/11/2014 00:54

Most of the smokers I know are very considerate.

Having said that, I'm open minded enough to realise we all live in different places, with different people and experiences.

Having said that, I don't think smokers should smoke during pregnancy or around their children as it can be bad for their children's health and it sets a very poor example.

I feel the same way about obese people who are actively trying to conceive and ignoring the possible risks to themselves and the baby, and I feel the same about alcohol and other drug addicts.

However, I am (again) open minded enough to realise that there can be very complicated issues around all of the above. Therefore, I try not to judge any of them. I just wish them and their unborn/born children the best of luck.

But if banging angrily at a keypad makes anyone feel better about themselves and their own parenting, I hope you're all a healthy weight, you don't smoke, drink to excess or have any kind of vices at all that might no set a good example...

HereBeHubbubs · 15/11/2014 00:54

Worra No, I'm within my BMI.
I've never smoked.

Yes, I have an unsympathetic opinion about smokers.

HereBeHubbubs · 15/11/2014 00:58

I fit your last sentence too, Worra, apart from angrily banging a keypad. There's more good people around than you realise.

CattyCatCat · 15/11/2014 00:59

Yanbu. I don't like them. I find the weak, pathetic and suicidal. I mostly hate what they do to and the damage they inflict on those who love them. To live a smoker is to be in a very abusive relationship.

EatShitDezza · 15/11/2014 01:02

^ Grin

Fucking hell, best over reaction ever

usualsuspect333 · 15/11/2014 01:04

You need a fag, Catty.

Jolleigh · 15/11/2014 01:09

Smokers are all suicidal and those that lives with them are in abusive relationships now? Go home Catty you're drunk.

Jolleigh · 15/11/2014 01:11

You know what I hate more than smokers? People who come out with bollocks like that ^

ItAllGetsBetter · 15/11/2014 01:12

And you've never done anything in your life that could have a negative impact on your health? Drink coffee? That's also supposedly an 'addictive drug' that has negative impact on the body. Are you also suicidal?!

CattyCatCat · 15/11/2014 01:16

Not everyone loves a smoker. You don't have to be drunk to express how sad watching smoking makes you. Watching a loved one die of throat cancer at age 42 fucks you to the core. He left behind a 2 year old DS. Selfish and avoidable, imo. Blame my hate on beer if you want Hmm
