To think kraft have ruined Cadburys

I've never felt the urge to eat a bag of jelly beans while stuffing my face with a bar of whole nut , nor have I been disappointed that the only flavours savoured from my beloved dairy milk are that of delicious creamy chocolate and not strawberry/banana/cola/popcorn etc.

I also like my choc in proper squares! Not the odd ball rounded shapes it comes in these days.

And now no more chocolate coins at Christmas!! Shock

AIBU to think all that was good has now been ruined! Sad

The thing that makes me sad about the messing-about with Cadburys is that Dairy Milk felt like one of those British things you could justifiably be proud of - not just the better-than-Hersheys taste, but all those Quaker chocolate philanthropists building villages and starting up charities.

Absolutely. Boyfriend of the time wasn't half as excited as I was when we had reason to go to Bournville, and I'm not sure he was completely fascinated by my impromptu lecture on model villages and philanthropic industrialists. But it is interesting, what they tried to do.

PuppyMonkey · 09/11/2014 20:51

Talking of the Quakers, I'm happy to say that Fry's Chocolate Cream remains as utterly wonderful as ever if you can get your hands on a bar.

Justgotosleepnow · 09/11/2014 20:54

Norman I think the sugar used is regular sugar. Well it was. Perhaps it has changed, along with the type of fat. That could explain the yukky aftertaste and sliminess everyone now tastes.

The more I think about it I reckon you are right, the sugar type may have changed. Mondelez will have cheaper sugar deals than Cadbury would have had. And experience with different types of sugar. And more (American) food technologists used to working with the different sugars. And when you have a takeover I'm guessing the new bosses just rampage through changing what they want. Confused

And I'm afraid Cadbury moved production to Poland etc before the kraft takeover. Kraft did vaguely say they would 'review' the somerdale closure. Then of course post takeover they still closed it anyway. A tragedy. Not least for the staff that used to work there. They used to make crunchie there. That was amazing to see.

I'm not able to eat chocolate at the mo, thanks to HG, but whenever DD has a bag of buttons, all I can smell is sugar, sugar, sugar, and no chocolate.

We have a wonderful locally made brand that I am already stocking up on for April when baby should have made their appearance, but everyone will be getting either that or Hotel Chocolat for Christmas this year.

RIP Cadbury :-(

feebeecat · 09/11/2014 20:58

YANBU arsing bastard wankstains, hope cadbury brothers are haunting Kraft & all the feckers who agreed that sale.
V.bitter, ruined the whole ethos of the area & messed with my chocolate- unacceptable Angry

Justgotosleepnow · 09/11/2014 21:03

A company with the same ethos as Cadbury & rowntree is Wilkin & Sons jam from Tiptree. The first company in the uk to give ex employees pensions, and company housing.

And the jam, honey etc they sell is TERRIFIC! So nice to see them doing well and not bought out Grin

Justgotosleepnow · 09/11/2014 21:07

Share price. That's all the board cares about. They could be making car parts for all the care they have about the product they sell. Very sad. I got very disillusioned.
Haunting is too good for emConfused

NitramAtTheKrap · 09/11/2014 21:19

Fry's chocolate cream are available from Holland and Barrett. I know that sounds a bit random, but I think because it is milk/egg free.

tilliebob · 09/11/2014 21:22

I prefer Aldi chocolate now and M&S walnut whips. Have given up on Cadbury now. There's a sentence I never thought I'd type.

ButterscotchClouds · 09/11/2014 21:31

I don't live too far from the Mondelez US headquarters. Not too long ago I was at an event where I sat next to a very senior executive who had been involved in the take over of Cadbury.

He was very sneery and condescending about the British attitude to Cadbury and pretty much admitted that they would be just steamrolling the Cadbury chocolate of old and replacing it with whatever they wanted to do. Seemed to think that we wouldn't notice.

PacificDogwood · 09/11/2014 21:33

It really is 'globalisation' at its worst.
And I am saying this as somebody who has never taken to Cadbury's (in my defence, I did not grow up with it).

PacificDogwood · 09/11/2014 21:35

Could we email this thread to Mondelez HQ? Grin

I am under no illusion that it would not change a single thing, but it would tell them that they are losing customers

poppetsaplenty · 09/11/2014 21:52

I had a twirl recently after not having one for a year or two and it was rank. Way too sugary and waxy - I could actually crunch sugar crystals in it.

However I have found that the very thin, rectangular cadbury dairy milk bars - six little bars for around a pound or so taste exactly the same as old Cadbury - the same taste as old Cadbury Easter eggs or buttons. They are the only Cadbury's I will eat now (unless really desperate).

Justgotosleepnow · 09/11/2014 21:56

The liquid chocolate used to make Easter eggs and buttons is different to the bars. So maybe they haven't messed around with that recipe, because it won't flow into the molds the same way.

AFingerofFudge · 09/11/2014 21:57

I am worried about Irish Cadbury's. As mentioned before, the reason why things like twirl and flake still taste good is because they are made in Ireland. The Irish Dairy Milk bars and Tiffins and Golden crisp also taste fab, however when were in Ireland a couple of months ago, cadbury had got rid of the foil that the chocolate was wrapped in, and the small bars were harder to find in the shops. Am worried that they'll try and stop production in Ireland.

Justgotosleepnow · 09/11/2014 21:57

Butterscotch your exec meeting is exactly what we all guessed. Even if they did read this thread they wouldn't care. As long as the sales keep growing and the share price is ok that's all they care about.

PigletJohn · 09/11/2014 22:10

we can get better chocolate from Lidl and Aldi, so why would we buy greasy new Cadbury?

I wonder if there are many independent European makers left. It's a pity Lindt is expensive. IIRC the UK standards for choc (including lots of vegetable fat, so a lower proportion of cocoa solids) used not to meet European standards.

PacificDogwood · 09/11/2014 22:14

Even if they did read this thread they wouldn't care. As long as the sales keep growing and the share price is ok that's all they care about.

Yes, I agree, but why are their sales still growing?? Confused

normansgreasybarnet · 09/11/2014 22:29

M & S do delicious Chocolate Money. We bought some last Christmas.

Darkesteyes · 09/11/2014 22:38

norman

my mum used to buy the M and S chocolate coins in the 80s.

Does anyone know if Lidl do their own version of Roses/Quality Street as i have yet to enter a Lidl store.

stainedglassheart · 09/11/2014 22:46

I stopped eating Cadbury's chocolate because, as everyone has said, it just tasted of fat and sugar and not much else. I buy Lidl's and Aldi's chocolate . Aldi's Giant Chocolate Buttons are just like Cadbury's Buttons used to be, before Kraft cynically altered the recipe to maximise their profits.

Sallyingforth · 09/11/2014 22:50

I've not seen the equivalent "Darkest" but Aldi have a variety of individual chocolate sweets.
Both Aldi and Lidl have several chocolate bars with varying cocoa contents. You are sure to find at least one that you like.

foreverton · 09/11/2014 22:51

What happened to wispa's? When they were relaunched they were gorgeous, I was seriously addicted, even bought a whole box once!
Now, I wouldn't touch them, they're tasteless:(
( I'm in bed with a big bag of maltesers though just double checked this and It had auto corrected to" I'm in bed with a big bag of marketers" haha.

foreverton · 09/11/2014 22:53

P.s bring back spira bars, they were the best:)

PigletJohn · 09/11/2014 23:08

"Yes, I agree, but why are their sales still growing??"

Vast amounts spent on marketing, ubiquity, remains of the reputation that took a hundred years to build but will be destroyed in far less.
