To think kraft have ruined Cadburys

I've never felt the urge to eat a bag of jelly beans while stuffing my face with a bar of whole nut , nor have I been disappointed that the only flavours savoured from my beloved dairy milk are that of delicious creamy chocolate and not strawberry/banana/cola/popcorn etc.

I also like my choc in proper squares! Not the odd ball rounded shapes it comes in these days.

And now no more chocolate coins at Christmas!! Shock

AIBU to think all that was good has now been ruined! Sad

It's a shame, I used to love biting into the hard square bars. Now I adore Ritter Sport- it's a German chocolate brand and they sell a few types in Lidl. Their praline flavour is to die for. I just wish they had more of the flavours you can get in Germany.

PigletJohn · 09/11/2014 11:34

I've heard it said that they use Palm Oil now which has changed the texture. I don't know if that's true. I've also heard that American brand managers get rewarded for increasing profitability, which they do by cheapening the ingredients just a tiny bit at a time, which after multiple iterations results in noticably poorer quality.

Certainly the texture of chocolate oranges has changed for the worse.

Aldi chocolate is much better, especially their swiss bar, when they have it.

bauhausfan · 09/11/2014 11:38

Cadburys have broken my heart. I used to be obsessed with their chocolate but now it tastes like sweet lard. I can't eat it any more. The Aldi and Lidl chocolate bars are a billion times nicer.

poolomoomon · 09/11/2014 11:39

I've just realised reading this thread that it's been a really long time since I even had a chocolate bar of any variety! I've had chocolate in cake but not an actual bar for many months... That's good going for me Grin. Ahem.

Anyway I've never had cadbury chocolate coins, tbh I don't think I've ever even seen them in shops before... The first I heard of them was everyone whinging that they'd stopped doing them! Always just had m&s ones. Last year got the fairtrade divine ones which were pretty good...

Cadbury chocolate has never been that great anyway. Nestlé is even worse aside from kitkat chunky. Kraft do daim bars, oui? They're one of my favourites. And I used to be very partial to a mars bar and pack of maltesers. It would appear my loyalties lie firmly with Mars Grin. I like a nice praline best though. Lindt is ok, a bit too sickly. Thorntons chocolate is AWFUL.

Chocolate debate, serious stuff.

PiggyontheRailway · 09/11/2014 11:39

I actually worked for Cadbury for over ten years. I agree Kraft have ruined a nice great company.

Chandon · 09/11/2014 11:40

It DOES Have a slightly vomitty tang.

What is that about? Lindt or other choc does not have that slight vomitty edge to it.

Is it the (rancid) fat they use instead if cocoa butter?

ConferencePear · 09/11/2014 11:40

I don't mind too much about the chocolate coins, but they've ruined the taste of the other things.
Worse still they lied and closed down factories and made people redundant when they said they wouldn't.

bauhausfan · 09/11/2014 11:41

Oh and Ritter bars are GORGEOUS - all the flavours.

florencedombey · 09/11/2014 11:58

The best Rittersport bars are the ones with rum and raisin in the red packet. You rarely see them in the UK, so I buy them in bulk whenever I go to Germany.

AlleyCat11 · 09/11/2014 12:00

Yes, Irish Cadbury's has always been nicer. Different milk & we use chocolate crumb. When I lived in London, in the 90s, I used to get it brought over. There was a better range of flavours too. Far superior to the stuff made in Bournville, I'm afraid. What's missing is the chocolate "hit". You don't get satisfaction out of a bar. But even the Irish Cadbury's is not as good as if was. Remember when you crack an Easter egg?

SmilesandPilesOfPresents · 09/11/2014 12:01

Crack it?

I remember having to chuck it on the floor to break it, now you just have to look it them and they give in.

PiggyontheRailway · 09/11/2014 12:03

The reason for the difference in taste if the Irish Cadburys is the use if Irish milk only. The grass in Ireland has a longer growing cycle than UK so the Irish herds have more fresh grass to eat hence the difference in taste.

icanhaveadarksideifyouwantmeto · 09/11/2014 12:04

cadburys was ruined for me when....

they found out in January that some of their easter eggs were contaminated

they sold them anyway

they did a product recall....ONE WEEK after Easter

SmilesandPilesOfPresents · 09/11/2014 12:08

contaminated?

with what?

TheIronGnome · 09/11/2014 12:13

The Cadburys in Egypt has the weird anti-melt stuff in it, I'd eat it if desperate but never really craved it when I was out there.

I have heard that they haven't changed the recipe but they must have don't something. I had one Cadburys creme egg this year and never wanted any more and usually I eat myself through several very easily AND I bought a bag of pound shop miss shapes the other day, some of them are Cadburys and I'm just not that fussed by them.

Probably no bad thing though...

Piffpaffpoff · 09/11/2014 12:14

Yes! I agree, it's all horrid now. On the upside though, I'm two stone lighter since I gave up my Cadbury's habit so there's always a silver lining!

SmilesandPilesOfPresents · 09/11/2014 12:15

At least there's a silver lining somewhere then, seeing as they got rid of those too.

Piffpaffpoff · 09/11/2014 12:19

Ha ha! Oh I used to live running my fingernail along the foil and tearing it. You can still get that thrill with Lindt thankfully.

It all went downhill when they stopped using the lovely purple foil Sad

EBearhug · 09/11/2014 13:00

I heard they changed from dairy milk to soya milk; I also heard that they have refuted this claim, so who knows.

I certainly agree that the Cadbury's you can get in Africa and Australia is weird, (certainly was 12 years ago, anyway,) and this is because they had to adapt the recipe so it doesn't melt in normal heat there. They had weird flavours, too, like strawberry. Not strawberry bits, but strawberry flavour. I can see that this could work in decent chocolate, but chocolate that's mostly preservative, it was just odd.

Sallyingforth · 09/11/2014 13:03

It's just congealed brown slime now. (legal note: my personal opinion).

Fortunately Aldi has the real thing, and much cheaper too. I'm sure I'll never buy Cadburys again.

GemmaTeller · 09/11/2014 13:05

We shared a Cadburys milk chocolate bar the other day - it was truly disgusting

watchingthedetectives · 09/11/2014 13:12

Completely agree

squoosh · 09/11/2014 13:20

YANBU.

I think it's quite sad that such an iconic brand has been ruined. What used to be delicious creamy chocolate is now just brown solidified sugary grease.
