To reject £100 refund offer from BUTLINS after holiday from hell!

OlderMummy1 · 26/10/2014 20:57

I wrote a letter of complaint to Butlins about a month ago after an absolutely appalling stay there. They replied yesterday (bang on the 28 days they have to reply) stating that they were sorry we were not happy and offered us £100 refund.

I am not happy with this as we had the most awful time. We went to Butlins at Skegness for the ‘Just for Tots’ week from 15th -19th September. We paid over £500 for 5 days in a gold apartment with premier dining with B line passes.

When I telephoned to book the holiday I enquired about the ages of the children who could attend the ‘Just For Tots’ break. I was advised that it would be adults with children under 5, although older siblings were welcome. I asked if any all-adult groups were allowed and was told categorically no. This convinced us to book the holiday as we had heard horror stories about hen/stag groups at Butlins. I also asked if there would be anyone to help us with our luggage as I would be travelling with my elderly mother, my 2 year old with special needs and my 6 month old. I was told that if I went to the Gold Reception someone would be able to assist me. This was particularly important as we were unable to book a ground floor room as they were all taken.

Upon arrival after a 4 hour trip I asked at Gold Reception for some assistance with luggage and was told that no one was available and we would have to do it ourselves. This took me 3 hours to do on my own, in between breastfeeding a baby, whilst my mother looked after the children. It was a very hot day and was utterly unpleasant.
That night we were all awoken at 1.30am by what sounded like a lot of drunk people going up the stairs next to our apartment. We were then kept awake until 5am by bumping, banging, laughing, shouting etc. It sounded like a group of men, although obviously we were sure that they must have children in there as we had been told adult groups were not allowed. We tried to phone the security number 3 times but there was no answer.

I complained at the Gold Reception the next day and a very harassed receptionist wrote my room number on a scrap of paper and said she would look into it. I never heard anything else.

The next night exactly the same happened, although at about 3am it sounded like some women turned up and joined in the drunk shenanigans. This continued every night of our stay.

When we left the apartment on the Friday I went to Gold Reception to ask if we could have some help with bringing the luggage down from the apartment. The receptionist told me that ‘we don’t do that due to the risk of damage to items’ which was completely contradictory to everything I had been told previously. I therefore had to struggle with our luggage myself. The cleaning staff then started to harass us at 9.30am to get into the apartment and we had to actually argue with them in order to get them to wait until 10am.

When I was packing the car I saw the people in the apartment above start to leave. I thought it would be interesting to see who came out as we had been unable to see hide nor hair of anyone. Imagine our shock and horror when 4 rough looking males came out and appeared to walk in the direction of the train station. I took a photograph of them and went immediately to complain to Gold Reception. First I was told that they must be people who had booked their break years in advance, before the Just For Tots breaks were arranged. I said that they were definitely not the sort of people to have done this. I was then told that they must be workers who they have to accommodate. This was much more likely as most of them were foreign and they looked like manual labourers. I was absolutely furious! We had paid a large amount of money for the best accommodation and Butlins thought it appropriate to put workers above us, who were out drinking until all hours and who carried on drinking thoughout the night. Why on earth they weren’t put into the staff accommodation or the caravans opposite I have no idea.

I believe that this was a safeguarding issue as these men could have been anyone. I was also concerned that if they were working on-site during the day they had been heavily drinking all night.

I believe that the advertising was misleading, the information I received over the telephone was incorrect and that my children were put at risk during our stay. All of us suffered healthwise from having hardly any sleep for 4 nights.

In their reply, Butlins stated that they had had no other complaints... blah de blah and that the people in that apartment were NOT contractors. They then implied that if people lie about who is on the booking then that is not their fault. I find this reply even more worrying! If 4 men go to the trouble of booking during a Just For Tots break, making up and paying for an imaginary child, then surely this needs investigation.

I am unhappy about accepting their offer of £100 and feel I should take it further. Luckily I have a brother in law who is a solicitor so he should be able to help me.

What would others do?

But reception told you people ARE allowed to stay there without children if they have a long standing booking.

DixieTreats · 26/10/2014 21:13

Er - I suppose she assumed that they weren't ordinary holidaymakers because it was a JUST FOR TOTS week and they had no child. Therefore they shouldn't have been allowed to book.
I'm with you OP but why on earth didn't you complain more at the time??

StepCatsmother · 26/10/2014 21:13

Am I the only one who read the entire post in the style of Hyacinth Bucket?

Mintyy · 26/10/2014 21:14

Yanbu to be unhappy with a £100 refund but do please take some advice on how to word any further complaint you might want to make!

SweetPea3 · 26/10/2014 21:18

OP - I agree that Butlins misrepresented the holiday and should have been more responsive to the noise issues. I don't know if it's worth pursuing more than the £100 offered though

26Point2Miles · 26/10/2014 21:19

They didn't really tell you to move your luggage by yourself did they? That's the conclusion you arrived at when there was nobody available the moment you clicked your fingers!

smashboxmashbox · 26/10/2014 21:19

How would you feel if the men had been taking photos of you and your children?

Concordial · 26/10/2014 21:20

Yeah, it sounds like it wasn't what you expected regarding the luggage and all adult groups but you lost my sympathy when you started going on about foreigners, manual workers and they could of "been anyone". So could any other parent on the Just For Tots break. They could of "been anyone" too.
As for taking photographs of them. How ridiculous? What's that going to achieve?

KnittedJimmyBoos · 26/10/2014 21:22

Op do you know your not the first on here to have complained for an awful butlins holiday> dreadful room, fag butts and so on, but worse of all was the way the company handled it - like they didnt give a shit.

This is what worries me and why I wonder why people go o butlins at all.

I mean the most awful two threads were running round summer time and still people starting threads on how they were looking forwards to going to butlins.

You could have got sooooooooo much more for your money in really beautiful and lovely places.

Butlins ownership seems to be lost in huge company maze and no one is actually taking responsibility for it.

I dont know why you didnt demand to be moved at the time, however with elderly mother in tow and dc sometimes you may feel its easier to leave it and hope the next night wont be as bad.

It sounds like an awful awful experience I am not sure what you should do about the 100 though because from past threads on here it seems no one is responsible for things going wrong at butlins...so I am not sure how much further you could go with it>

ilovesooty · 26/10/2014 21:23

Oh and next time you book a holiday and ask for things like luggage assistance and assurances of no rough looking foreign men anywhere near your children perhaps you should get these conditions confirmed by email.

Fishstix · 26/10/2014 21:23

It took you 3 hours to get some cases and your family upstairs?? Really?? Even withbreasfeeding fctored in thats some huge timescale.

WD41 · 26/10/2014 21:23

Mind you it's pretty shocking there weren't any bellboys available at the gold reception

ravenAK · 26/10/2014 21:24

I'm a bit bemused by the three hour luggage shifting bit tbh.

Assuming one good sized case per person, & maybe a couple of extra bags, that's half an hour per bag.

Unless the accommodation was a mile away from the point at which you parked or were dropped off, this does seem excessive.

I can understand being annoyed about the noise at night, & think £100 is probably a reasonable offer, given that you presumably enjoyed all the site facilities during the day.

These guys may have been drunk & boisterous, but they don't seem at any point to have offered you any intentional offence or even been aware of your existence, so a bit off to sneer at their 'rough' appearance.

I suspect that Butlins will be able to show that they fulfilled their contract with you & have made a proportionate offer of a partial refund to ameliorate your disappointment with the holiday, so I doubt your BIL will be able to do much, really.

smashboxmashbox · 26/10/2014 21:26

All those assurances you got when you phoned up to book the holiday, you did get them in writing, didn't you? Coz otherwise, they ain't worth the paper they're (not) written on.

ilovesooty · 26/10/2014 21:26

With any luck your BIL will advise you not to take pictures of people you don't know in future.

KnittedJimmyBoos · 26/10/2014 21:28

as I would be travelling with my elderly mother, my 2 year old with special needs and my 6 month old. I was told that if I went to the Gold Reception someone would be able to assist me. This was particularly important as we were unable to book a ground floor room as they were all taken.

She has an elderly mother, a sn toddler and a 6 month old, she has chosen somewhere who when asked questions assured her they would be able to help her, and it does sound like she needed additional help no?

They let her down. its shit, she isnt a princess clicking her fingers to lift her louis vuiton luggage is she?

she has an elderly mother, 6 month old and a 2 year old with special needs and they let her down, they assured her they would have someone to help as they had no ground floor rooms free.

they let her down.

Nicknacky · 26/10/2014 21:29

The "just for kids" does that mean that the whole camp is exclusively for parents and young children? What about a couple with no kids?

Seems like they risk losing a lot of business, surely?

smashboxmashbox · 26/10/2014 21:30

She booked too late to get a ground floor room. She could have decided not to go at that point.

Nicknacky · 26/10/2014 21:30

Yes, they did let her down if that's what they assured her. And they have offered her £100.

OlderMummy1 · 26/10/2014 21:30

The unpacking took 3 hours because our baby has special needs and requires a lot of equipment. We had to take an absolute car full of stuff...breathing monitors and such like. The apartment was up some quite steep stairs so it took me about 25 trips. Obviously you can't carry as much stuff when you have to negotiate stairs as well. It was very hot, I did have to keep stopping to breastfeed as our baby doesn't feed well and also for a rest as I was exhausted.

londonrach · 26/10/2014 21:31

Those poor men putting up with someone as judgmental as you. I stopped reading on the photo of the men and your sweeping nasty comments about the men. Please complain op as butlins will enjoy your complaint. Might win their xmas best complaints this year. Another issue...3 hours to carry cases up. How many have you got. Took us less than 2 hours to empty a 2 bed first floor flat of everything a few weeks ago!!!! Sofa, freezer, oven, bed on holiday? Yabu. However yanbu re noise after 11am which should have been addressed but butlins. Your yanbu however has been lost within the yabu.

KnittedJimmyBoos · 26/10/2014 21:31

She booked too late to get a ground floor room. She could have decided not to go at that point

But she thought that wouldnt impact them as there would be help.

SoonToBeSix · 26/10/2014 21:31

Three hours to move luggage! I have moved house in less time.
As for " manual labourers" being a safe guarding risk to children there are no words.

smashboxmashbox · 26/10/2014 21:31

Nobody made you go. If the room wasn't suitable due to stairs, why did you book it?
This sort of thing wouldn't happen at Centreparcs.

RebeccaCloud9 · 26/10/2014 21:31

You need a sad face Daily Mail pic!
