Got that Goofy!
Nearly 20 years at the chalkface. Just can't do it any more. People don't realise what the job actually entails.
Serving teachers I salute you!

Cantbelievethisishappening · 20/10/2014 20:22

aJumpedUpPantryBoy · 20/10/2014 20:22

guitarosauras · 20/10/2014 20:22

How dare teachers have training days!!!
I'm outraged!

CrumpleHornedSnorkack · 20/10/2014 20:23

Love the kittens! My cats are in the grumpy middle age stage now, I miss the kitten stage.

BettyMoody · 20/10/2014 20:24

if it helps, OP, teachers mainly HATE Td days

MrsMinton · 20/10/2014 20:25

Lovely kittens

TSSDNCOP · 20/10/2014 20:28

Brilliant kittens.

Stupid question in OP.

DadDadDad · 20/10/2014 20:28

I work in a senior role in an office with 28 days holidays plus bank holidays. Teachers get at least twice that holiday.

But they work weekends, have to use evenings and some holidays to mark and prepare, and the stress levels in term time can be horrendous. Teachers have no flexibility over when to take their holidays. They deserve those holidays.

By the way, I used to be a secondary school teacher, so I speak directly from experience.

GratefulHead · 20/10/2014 20:28

...and the class teacher I work with puts in hours of work a night in preparation for the next week/month plus marking books. She doesn't get paid for working out of school hours but she has to do it just to keep on top of everything. She isn't alone either...every teacher I know Has the same hellish workload. Last thing I want to do is become a teacher.

MassaAttack · 20/10/2014 20:29

TT days are pretty useful if you want to getaway for a long weekend, or visit somewhere that's always busy in the hols.

LaurieFairyCake · 20/10/2014 20:30

Whenever I read these threads I'm astonished at how your average person can't count even though loads of teachers put the maths up for people to read

So for the cheap seats and the thickos:

they DO the training days in the holidays, they lost the holidays years ago

GratefulHead · 20/10/2014 20:31

I know our class teacher was in school for all but two weeks of the holidays preparing the classroom, sorting out th curriculum for the year, updating on curriculum changes etc.

Don't know if that's standard or not.

Billynomates71 · 20/10/2014 20:34

I am peeved that our kids miss 3-4 days of school a year due to inset days for teacher training plus a few more besides for the odd strike.

We as parents are repeatedly told that our kids must not miss one moment of school as it is so important to not disrupt the curriculum. Unless the teachers have something else to do, then it's fine.

I work a 60-80 hour week typically, 48 weeks of the year plus bank/public holidays. I am not trying to be goady but I do think teachers bemoan their lot, without having a fucking clue what real life working is about. And then to throw an extra non pupil in the mix here and there. Yes it is difficult to find child care when we both work ft. No I don't consider school to be free child care, I pay for this through the enormous taxes I pay thank you very much and am entitled to have an opinion about it.

The reason I think teachers have all leapt in so defensively here (apart from a few realistic voices, sadly being drowned out) is because they know they are on a cushy number where holidays are concerned and are frightened to lose it.

But they don't miss those days
They never had them

Corabell · 20/10/2014 20:35

INSET days are in the holidays.

HTH

PS why don't you train as a teacher. You just need a degree, a PGCE and a year's probation/nqt then secure a permanent contract and you can ride the same sweet gravy train.

BettyMoody · 20/10/2014 20:36

Billy if it is so great, why arent you a teacher? Surely you would have so much to contribute?

HalfSpamHalfBrisket · 20/10/2014 20:36

To get back to the OPs question, training can't be delivered in the holidays as I am too busy slinging margaritas down my neck somewhere exotic. Hic.

BettyMoody · 20/10/2014 20:36

and billy listen

THOSE DAYS WERE TAKEN FROM HOLIDAYS TEACHERS HAD.

THEY DONT STILL HAVE THEM IN THE HOLIDAYS AS YOU NEED TRAINING AT DIFFERENT TIMES OF THE YEAR

Corabell · 20/10/2014 20:37

I will repeat for the slow of thinking.

If INSET did not exist your child would still have been off school today.

UptheHammers1 · 20/10/2014 20:38

I understand teachers 'lost' 5 days holiday that now count as inset days but to be fair you still have twice as many as all office workers, me included and I also bring work home and work weekends.

whattheseithakasmean · 20/10/2014 20:39

I have to say, my DH gave up a job in private industry to retrain as a teacher and he does think the teacher's terms & conditions are absolutely fantastic by comparison.

BettyMoody · 20/10/2014 20:39

so become a fucking teacher then!

WhereTheWildlingsAre · 20/10/2014 20:39

I'm sensing anger and tension from you billy... [head tilt]

Corabell · 20/10/2014 20:39

If it's so great you should join he profession billy.

You would be very, very welcome. Perhaps you could tell teachers tales of "real life" working, as of course teaching isn't a real job.
