More of a what would you do but friend is due next month and she has the name picked out.

It's a nice name but here's the thing, it's not a common name and the way she is pronouncing it is wrong.

Would you tell her?

squoosh · 20/10/2014 16:36

My thatch is slightly harder than than my thistle

Grin

That sounds a bit filthy!

StillFrigginRexManningDay · 20/10/2014 16:36

Dublin with a slight Cavan twang.

gentlehoney · 20/10/2014 16:37

I think it is usually "Dayna" in America and used for boys too.

3LeetleKeettens · 20/10/2014 16:37

My best friend is Dana, pronounced day-na

UK

Waltermittythesequel · 20/10/2014 16:38

Tadgh with a th?

I pronounce it Tie-g. So does everyone I know!

Irish here too.

Thurlow · 20/10/2014 16:39

Ha! It would make a great family motto. Bet it sounds dead clever in Latin too.

PrimalLass · 20/10/2014 16:41

Why the bejesus would it be pronounced Darna?

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 20/10/2014 16:41

Werent there thread about a woman whos friends were making mean comments about the name Dana?

moxon · 20/10/2014 16:44

Grin at the somewhat rude sensory levels of thistling and thatching!

StillFrigginRexManningDay · 20/10/2014 16:46

Which Irish are you using? Ulster Irish here Smile. Slight differences in dialects for non irish speakers in the three types of Irish.

Thurlow · 20/10/2014 16:48

You should hear it here, moxon, I have a lisp, it sounds charming Grin

StillFrigginRexManningDay · 20/10/2014 16:51

Lisp is the cruellest word ever.

moxon · 20/10/2014 16:52

Oh thurlow you thistling thatching lispy sexy thing, you!

Thurlow · 20/10/2014 16:53

It is, isn't it? What fucker decided that the word to describe having an issue with saying S's should have a sodding S in it?!

I occasionally have to say "thesaurus" in presentations at work. Those are bad days.

NadiaWadia · 20/10/2014 16:55

Don't know if Dana pronounced 'day-na' is purely American, as I went to school with one back in the 70s, she had an English family background as far as I know.
The best known Dana pronounced 'Dah-na' is the Irish singer, AFAIK. I wonder if day-na and dah-na are actually 2 different names from different origins that happen to be spelt the same?
To add to the confusion, there was also the American 1940s and 50s film star, Dana Andrews, who was a man, and I think it can be a male name, though I doubt any parents would choose to call their DS that today!

SconeRhymesWithGone · 20/10/2014 16:57

The books have it written as Tara, the series she is referred to by all characters in a Southern accent which sounds like Terra.

I disagree. I just listened to several snippets. It's a subtle distinction but it's there. And shading toward Terra would be a more Northern pronunciation. I'm Southern and from Georgia. Watch Gone With the Wind. "Yankees, Yankees in Tara?" Smile That's how we pronounce it,

moxon · 20/10/2014 16:58

Lisp is the cruellest word and sorry the hardest? Grin (I think it is also one of three things Tracy Chapman's lover can't say?)

StillFrigginRexManningDay · 20/10/2014 16:59

Some fucker with a sick sense of humour Thurlow.
