More of a what would you do but friend is due next month and she has the name picked out.

It's a nice name but here's the thing, it's not a common name and the way she is pronouncing it is wrong.

Would you tell her?

(It's kind of not that stupid though, if you've never heard it pronounced Day-na before)

No I've never heard it pronounced that way before. I have actually known quite a few people called Dana. Just not pronounced like that.

I'm going off to Google. Which I probably should have done in the first place instead of making a stupid post.

Tara and cara are more to so with English vs American accents.

Whereas Dayna is a perfectly legit pronounciation for the name Dana regardless of accent.

Nessalina · 20/10/2014 14:22

There's no such thing as a stupid question.

Ok, that's not quite true, but if you've never heard it before it's a perfectly reasonable thing to ask the MN collective. Much better than putting your foot in it with your pal! Smile

LuckyLopez · 20/10/2014 14:22

I know one pronounced Dan-ner (female).

cherrybombxo · 20/10/2014 14:22

There is a Day-na in The L Word, I think it's much prettier than Dah-na.

The "Dar-na" thing only works with a certain English accent, I'm Scottish so I don't ever make a "dar" sound, always "dah".

Callani · 20/10/2014 14:25

Isn't this person on here? I'm sure I saw a post the other day saying "I want to call my DD Dana but pronounced Day-na - is this terrible?" Oh and most people said no because of X-files Dana Scully.

CalamityKate1 · 20/10/2014 14:26

Tara and Cara - yes more to do with the accent than pronunciation.

Eg "bottle" with an American accent sounds like "boddle".

Vitalstatistix · 20/10/2014 14:26

I always thought it was Day-nuh

Didn't know we said it differently over here.

ThatIsJustNotCricket · 20/10/2014 14:29

OK so Tara and Cara is accents. See I don't know much Blush.

ThatIsJustNotCricket · 20/10/2014 14:30

Callani I hope not.

MrSheen · 20/10/2014 14:32

I would have said Day-na. I don't know any in RL so I'd be going off Dana Scully.

ImperialBlether · 20/10/2014 14:34

Has she been watching Homeland?

bearleftmonkeyright · 20/10/2014 14:34

I think yabu. Either way is acceptable.

steff13 · 20/10/2014 14:36

This is all I can think when I hear the name Dana.

:) Why would it be pronounced "Darna?" Where does the "r" come from, when there's no "r" in it?

To tell my friend she is pronouncing her (future) DD's name wrong?
DanyStormborn · 20/10/2014 14:36

I've only ever known Dana pronounced DAY-na. I'm thinking Dana Scully from X-Files and Dana Brody from Homeland.

enWoooquethesythebearingwizard · 20/10/2014 14:36

There was a thread on exactly this topic on here recently, except the OP was naming her child Dana and surprised that people pronounce is darn-ah.
She was going for day-na too.

raffle · 20/10/2014 14:37

I went to school with a Dana, 20 years ago in England, and her name was pronounced Day-na.

Hatespiders · 20/10/2014 14:37

But Americans don't pronounce Montana 'Montayna' do they? Or Louisiayna?
I don't much like Dayna, but I do feel a parent has the right to name their child and pronounce that name how they wish.
As a teacher, I came across some really funny names, but you had to keep a straight face. I had a Paul Small and a Mark Clark in the same class. And a Mhairi Grubb (who was always called 'Hairy Grub' by the others, poor lass.)
The worst was Dwayne Pipe. His mates called him 'Gutter'.

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 20/10/2014 14:37

OP I don't think you have been stupid Grin
I'm from Canada and it is always Day-na over there. I would have written your post about Dah-na TBH!!!

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 20/10/2014 14:38

Arf @ Dwayne Pipe

pennygirl26 · 20/10/2014 14:47

My Real Name is Dana, I hate being called day-na.

StillFrigginRexManningDay · 20/10/2014 14:48

The Irish singer is called Dana as in Dah-na not Darna.

Although I like Dana as in Dayna.

bauhausfan · 20/10/2014 14:51

I'd say Dah-na for Dana as I am N.Irish. I think most Irish people would pronounce it thus.

StillFrigginRexManningDay · 20/10/2014 14:55

I can see issues with Ciara in years to come. Kear-ra vs See-ar-a.

RufusTheReindeer · 20/10/2014 14:57

I have heard it pronounced

Dana as in (ba)nana

And as Day na
