More of a what would you do but friend is due next month and she has the name picked out.

It's a nice name but here's the thing, it's not a common name and the way she is pronouncing it is wrong.

Would you tell her?

Surely she can pronounce her own daughters name as she wishes?

I guess.

It can be pronounced dayna

MustBeDueSomeBetterFeet · 20/10/2014 14:09

I'd pronounce it Dayna.

wigglesrock · 20/10/2014 14:10

I pronounce it Da Na but I know it can be pronounced Day Na. I would never say Dar Na

TiggerLillies · 20/10/2014 14:10

I'd say 'Day-na', never heard it the other way - but if she wanted to go with the that I'd trust she knew what she was doing and liked it that way.

overthemill · 20/10/2014 14:10

Dana is provinces 'day - na' or 'dar-na' I think. It doesn't really matter. If it was Charlotte and she said 'shar- lotty' that would be wrong but loads of names have slight variations

kittykarate · 20/10/2014 14:11

I think 'DAYna' has come from the US, but I'd say it's pretty widespread now thanks to the X files and Homeland.

I think 'Darna' always makes me think of that Irish singer.

AriaBanjo · 20/10/2014 14:11

I would say Day-na for Dana.

nohysteriahere · 20/10/2014 14:11

I would pronounce it- Day na

hth

OwlCapone · 20/10/2014 14:11

I'd pronounce it Dayna too.

ThatIsJustNotCricket · 20/10/2014 14:12

Is dayna the American pronouncation then?

The names Tara and Cara for instance. Pronounced as tar-ra and car-ra in the UK but tare-a and care-a in the US?

In which case i would still think it's odd. She is British after all...

OP posts:
Nessalina · 20/10/2014 14:12

Yep, Day-na is a perfectly normal pronunciation of Dana.

Nessalina · 20/10/2014 14:13

She's probably an X-Phile Smile

ThatIsJustNotCricket · 20/10/2014 14:13

Never heard that before.

Feel so silly now Blush.

OP posts:
ThatIsJustNotCricket · 20/10/2014 14:14

So in that case it's defiantly not a good idea to tell her anything Grin

OP posts:
squoosh · 20/10/2014 14:14

It doesn't matter if you think it's odd, it's a legitimate pronunciation.

ThatIsJustNotCricket · 20/10/2014 14:14

She's probably an X-Phile

What's an X Phile?

OP posts:
Thurlow · 20/10/2014 14:15

And this is what MN is for - all the stupidity done and dusted without any offence to your friend Grin

(It's kind of not that stupid though, if you've never heard it pronounced Day-na before)

throckenholt · 20/10/2014 14:15

UK most likely dah-na - but American more likely Day-na (think Dana Scully on X-files fame).

SanityClause · 20/10/2014 14:15

I don't like the way Day-na sounds, but I don't see why it's not "correct".

I think you need to be polite about her baby name choice. Your friend likes it. You don't have to.

(Actually, not desperate about Dah-na, either, but that's a matter of personal taste.)

Aeroflotgirl · 20/10/2014 14:16

Dana can be pronounced in different ways, just because you haven't heard the other version dies not make it wrong!

KenAdams · 20/10/2014 14:16

There's a Day-na in Homeland so she might have got it from there.

Gileswithachainsaw · 20/10/2014 14:16

I'd say day-na too. As in Dana scully. Love the name.

X - pile is name given to fans of x - files

Gileswithachainsaw · 20/10/2014 14:16

X-phile rather

kali110 · 20/10/2014 14:18

Would straight away think dayna and im british.
