More of a what would you do but friend is due next month and she has the name picked out.

It's a nice name but here's the thing, it's not a common name and the way she is pronouncing it is wrong.

Would you tell her?

I've noticed the 'Creg' thing and also Graham is pronounced as Gram.

BikeRunSki · 20/10/2014 15:31

I have heard Dahna and Dayna pronunciations of Dana. Is that the name in question?

steff13 · 20/10/2014 15:31

I don't know if it's an American thing but I've noticed in a few US programmes that the name "Craig" is pronounced like "creg" it sounds really weird.

When I say it, it sounds like "Cray-g," with a hard "g" at the end. How does it sound when you say it?

SconeRhymesWithGone · 20/10/2014 15:35

Craig is often pronounce Creg in the US. And many people, but not all, pronounce Graham as Gram.

All the Craigs I know are Creg. The one Graham I know pronounces it Gray-um.

SweetsForMySweet · 20/10/2014 15:41

Dana is usually pronounced daa-na or Day-na.

I've never heard of anyone pronouncing Dana as Darna (because there is no R in the name)

EEVEElution · 20/10/2014 15:41

I had a Tadhg in my class, I pronounced it tie-g but I could never spell his name, whenever I had to write it on the board I would spell it wrong and it became a bit of a running joke :(

StillFrigginRexManningDay · 20/10/2014 15:42

I suppose to someone who dosen't speak the language it would be slightly anglicised to a Tie sound rather than the Irish soft th sound. Its like when Cillian Murphy was starring in some film and the UK channels were pronouncing it as silly-in.

Thurlow · 20/10/2014 15:43

God, I think I'd end up saying "Thag" Blush

I must be an idiot. I can't even get my mouth to say thuh-eye-guh without pronouncing the three syllables individually.

I clearly must never, never move to Ireland or I'll get end up insulting everyone in the country Blush

SistersOfPercy · 20/10/2014 15:51

Tara in True Blood ( and in the US generally) is not Terra or Tare-ra. The "a" is the same a as in cat or fat.

The books have it written as Tara, the series she is referred to by all characters in a Southern accent which sounds like Terra.

grocklebox · 20/10/2014 15:52

I totally disagree with "her child her choice, she can pronounce it however she likes".
A child is not a toy, you made it but you don't own it. And you owe it certain things. One of these thing is to not make their name ridiculous, totally unwieldy, and in some cases down right cruel. I'm not talking about minor differences but you simply CAN'T pronounce your childs name however you like. You can't say her names Anne, spelled BOB.
Or to use an actual person I've met...."her names Sierra. No you're spelling it wrong, its CIARA"
No dear, its not. Those letters don't make that sound in any language.

StillFrigginRexManningDay · 20/10/2014 15:53

Ah you wouldn't insult us at all but its when people don't make an effort to at least try and pronounce the name. DBs boss makes no effort and has decided it is Thag whether it is his name or not. My maidin name was a bone of contention. Think Gallagher* (Gallag-her vs Galla-her).

*not my real name.

RebeccaCloud9 · 20/10/2014 15:54

I'm the same Thurlow - I can't pronounce thuh-eye-guh at all! And the other way pps have written it comes out of my mouth as tiger!

I don't understand ah being different to ar though - I would say them exactly the same. To me, "Ah, I see" would be pronounced the same as if it were written "Are, I see". How else can it be said??

Also, have never known how to pronounce Cillian - is it Killian?

FishWithABicycle · 20/10/2014 15:58

Dana pronounced day-na perfectly acceptable.

I know of someone (friend of a friend of a friend) who was given the welsh name Mair as the mum had liked the name of a character in a book, but she pronounced it "mare" (as in female horse) rather than the correct "my-er" and it made the whole family seem horribly ignorant so it depends on the name.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 20/10/2014 15:59

How is Cillian pronounced? I asked Dh who is Irish and he didn't knowHmm

cherrybombxo · 20/10/2014 15:59

I met someone whose daughter was called Siobhan. They pronounced it SEE-OH-BAN. That poor girl.

I used to work with a Siobhan and taking phone calls for her was great, especially if it was a non-English speaker looking to talk to her. We used to call her "See-ban" and "Sigh-ob-han" just to annoy her Grin

squoosh · 20/10/2014 16:00

Cillian is pronounced killy-un

Thurlow · 20/10/2014 16:01

I'm literally sitting here muttering "Thie-guh" over and over!

So it's a "th" as it "thistle", then "i" like "eye", then a very hard "g" at the end? Th-eye-G?

Ah and Are are ever so slightly different to me. Are comes from the front of my mouth, nearer my teeth; Ah comes from the back of my mouth.

Or potentially I am talking bollocks there!

SistersOfPercy · 20/10/2014 16:03

Cillian Murphy

As you were.

StillFrigginRexManningDay · 20/10/2014 16:04

Yes Killian is Cillian (no K in Irish).
Ah I see sounds like Ah I see. Are I see sounds like I am trying and failing to be a pirate, what with being irish.

JerseySpud · 20/10/2014 16:04

I wanted to call DD1 Dana as i was (and still am) a major x-phile.

But sadly DH vetoed it.

So she has another SciFi name instead Grin

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 20/10/2014 16:05

Thanks squooshSmile

Thurlow-me too

squoosh · 20/10/2014 16:06

Tadhg

StillFrigginRexManningDay · 20/10/2014 16:06

Yes a soft th as thistle rather than a hard th as in thatch.

Thurlow · 20/10/2014 16:07

In terms of just changing the pronunciation of names, a family friend has the middle name Regina but pronounced Rej-een-a. At their wedding you could see the registrant making a very determined effort to pronounce it the way that had been asked to. I always assumed that was friend's mother reading the name rather than hearing it.

StillFrigginRexManningDay · 20/10/2014 16:08

DB is practically famous, all these random women trying to say his name Grin .
