I think I've been labouring under a misapprehension here. I've worn stockings once or twice, and have always worn the belt under my knickers.

However, somebody at work was saying she wears them occasionally but found them really awkward to go to the loo in. I couldn't understand why, until I realised she has the belt and straps over her pants, so she has to unclip, or they won't go over the top of her stockings.

So I mentioned that if you put them on first, and your knickers over the top there was no problem. She looked at me as if I were mad, and said that that was definitely the wrong way around to wear them. Everybody else agreed with her.

So AIBU to have thought that (I was convinced I was right), and if I wear them again, WIBU to do it the 'wrong' way, since I can actually go to the loo without severe undergarment rearrangement?

Can I have the last word on this? When I was 23 back in 1993, I looked after a 98 year old French Lady, who married an English officer she met during WW1, she had many tales to tell but she used to tell me daily " you English do not know how to wear stockings, except you"
She had seen my first shift my stockings as I lifted her up the bed, and hocked my dress up.
Her points were, a/ practicality, going to the loo
B/ look, when outside knickers and skinny as I was then they are a bit of elastic which ruins the drape of your clothes.
C, for everything else the knickers are just in the way, so easy removal is for most.
Obviously the times then, she explained removal of knickers was needed as she had very little in the way of underclothes, knickers where voluminous then, oh and she was the local good time girl her stories where amazing, honoured to have met her.

I've tried wearing hold-ups.

Perhaps I was just trying the wrong brands or something, but if they were large enough to be comfortable around my thigh they kept falling down, and if they were small enough to actually stay up, they dug into my thighs uncomfortably and looked ugly (much as Pipbin describes).

Stockings and suspenders win on both comfort and style.

I have only bought hold ups once, for my wedding day. I have issues with lace (itchy) and couldn't find a suspender belt without it, plus I was pregnant and didn't really want one round my belly; so I went with hold ups that had silicone "holdy uppy" bits - they worked really well and didn't make me allergic (allergy to latex too, I'm such a joy!)

I always wear my knickers under my suspender belt. It looks much nicer and feels sexy which is the whole point of wearing stockings for me! Going to the toilet is no problem, I just pull them down until they reach my stocking tops. Easy!

This may be a little controversial but definitely no knickers for me if I'm wearing suspenders and stockings. The advantages are many!

You're right, op. If anyone wears them day to day, they'd know. Knickers have to be over to be practical and fun.

My mother had some of those body corset things with attached suspenders. There's no way knickers wouldn't be over the attached stockings.

This may be a zombie thread but it has honestly been a lightbulb moment for me. How I didn't think of this before I don't know. I thank you, mumsnet, and my husband thanks you.

Of course they go under knickers! Even my nan told me that and she was wearing them a million years ago.

for hundreds of years women only had either thin woolen stockings or silk. There was no elastic, so they wore a Suspender belt with 4 -5 straps that held the stockings up. The knickers went on, over the top, so they could be removed quickly, for quickies and the loo.

Hundreds of years ago suspenders didn't exist. They are quite a recent invention.
