I think I've been labouring under a misapprehension here. I've worn stockings once or twice, and have always worn the belt under my knickers.

However, somebody at work was saying she wears them occasionally but found them really awkward to go to the loo in. I couldn't understand why, until I realised she has the belt and straps over her pants, so she has to unclip, or they won't go over the top of her stockings.

So I mentioned that if you put them on first, and your knickers over the top there was no problem. She looked at me as if I were mad, and said that that was definitely the wrong way around to wear them. Everybody else agreed with her.

So AIBU to have thought that (I was convinced I was right), and if I wear them again, WIBU to do it the 'wrong' way, since I can actually go to the loo without severe undergarment rearrangement?

I can also vouch for stockings direct. Great choice and speedy service.

it's strange how some of the larger retailer all show knickers under not over.I dont wear them I always thought they are too fiddly and couldn't understand why anyone would bother. I think wearing knickers over would look odd but I guess I am used to seeing them worn the wrong way round?!

This thread caused a discussion in our office today that blew up out of all proportions. Seems like one lady in our office always wears her knickers over tights. I didnt know anyone ever did this ? We then talked about bodysuits. I never wear knickers with a body, and if i wear tights, i always wear them under the body. Seems like some wear knickers and a body, some wear knickers, tights, body in that order and others wear knickers, body, tights ? Whilst others wear them the same way as i do. confused now !!

So glad you've started this thread, OP! I've been inwardly grinding my gears every time I go past Anne Summers and see the mannequins wearing them the wrong way round. Of course the belt goes on first and then the knickers, and it's every mother's duty to make sure her daughters know this!

I learnt this when working in a care home and helping an elderly lady get dressed. I got a severe rebuke for passing her knickers before her stockings and suspender belt.

Yes well into her 90s she was wearing all her "foundation" garments every day!

Suspenders are absolutely meant to be worn under knickers!

I have always worn my knickers under, and struggled to wee. Knickers on top makes much more sense.

Someone outbreaks commented on wearing Kirby grips with the flat side against their head- I still do this- that must be why they always fall out!

Knickers over tights. My mum does this to keep the horrid things up when she has to wear them. BUT she wears a (cotton) pair underneath. (I thought only my mum did this wearing pants over tights thing).

Good grief of course knickers go over the suspender belt. It would look ridiculous with the belt on top, especially if you were wearing French knickers.

You used to be able to buy tights with a cotton gusset, presumably to avoid the VPL, so if you wore those and then a pair of knickers over to keep them up it's not quite so skanky

I think the cotton gusset/cotton knickers under tights is more to avoid thrush.

While I mainly avoid tights because they make me feel hot, it's also to avoid thrush from having nylon in that area.

Oh good lord, I never even twigged that you're supposed to wear them that way round. Massively more convenient.

Don't know about generational, I'm only 23 and I knew knickers went over belt. I don't just wear them for activities though, I like them as a leg covering too.

My mum never wore them. Or if she did, she didn't mention it.

Back when they were worn for functional reasons -my mum's generation - (as in tights were hard to come by) they were worn under by everyone so that you could go to the loo easily. Now they are worn primarily for sexual reasons, a lot of people choose to wear them over because that's the way they're displayed on shop mannequins, and since they're only doing it once in a while on a romantic date, the functionality of a whole day in the office trying to go to the loo doesn't matter.

There's a brilliant bit in "Coupling" where the blokes are telling one of their number the fibs women tell during the early stages of dating: "I always wear stockings, I prefer them" is in fact accompanied by frantic texts round their friendship circle of "send me the only pair of stockings in the whole world, I've pulled."

Argh, need edit button - yes agree there are also practical reasons even now for choosing to wear them - much less likely to get thrush. Mercifully I now work in an environment where I can simply wear jeans the whole time, so have no need for either tights or stockings.
