to have thought you wear a suspender belt UNDER your knickers?

I think I've been labouring under a misapprehension here. I've worn stockings once or twice, and have always worn the belt under my knickers.

However, somebody at work was saying she wears them occasionally but found them really awkward to go to the loo in. I couldn't understand why, until I realised she has the belt and straps over her pants, so she has to unclip, or they won't go over the top of her stockings.

So I mentioned that if you put them on first, and your knickers over the top there was no problem. She looked at me as if I were mad, and said that that was definitely the wrong way around to wear them. Everybody else agreed with her.

So AIBU to have thought that (I was convinced I was right), and if I wear them again, WIBU to do it the 'wrong' way, since I can actually go to the loo without severe undergarment rearrangement?

I recommend french knickers over suspenders.

moggiek · 17/10/2014 02:53

Definitely under.

LuluJakey1 · 17/10/2014 03:28

I didn't realise they were a thing at all. Have never worn them. Once tried them on and found it all uncomfortable and fussy.
I do like nice underwear but nothing fussy or tacky. Didn't wear tights or stockings under my wedding dress, just pretty pants and bra on which, as we lazed on the bed in exhaustion after the day, too tired for sex, I squirted tomato sauce from my bacon sandwich and mug of tea.The stain never came out!

Tiptops · 17/10/2014 03:48

Knickers under belt. The other way round would just look naff and wrong.

TheRealJoanWarburton · 17/10/2014 03:59

If I wear anything on my legs, I wear stockings, and have done since 1965 -ish (started young).

The suspender belt goes under the knickers.
French knickers are best. French knickers are not boxer shorts - I wish manufacturers would understand that.
The belt should have three or more straps on each side, with metal clips.
Stockings are not worn to finish above the knee, as often pictured. They need to come up to the top of your legs if you want to look good.

Maybe there's a generation gap here. Those of us who wore stockings before tights were invented know it's knickers over girdle/suspender belt, as it was for our mothers and grandmothers. Clothing is meant to be practical and that's the practical way.

MuttonCadet · 17/10/2014 05:46

Of course it's under, to wear them over is impractical.

Eastpoint · 17/10/2014 06:15

Under, I find the catalogues/models the wrong way round bizarre. Maybe it's because the stylists' mothers are younger so they didn't grow up seeing their mothers wearing stockings everyday? I wore stockings as a teen, much cheaper to only replace the laddered leg rather than a whole pair of tights.

marriednotdead · 17/10/2014 06:27

Old enough to know that the suspenders go under too, I always used to wear stockings as I was prone to thrush when I was younger.

I work in the lingerie business now and having them over on mannequins and in modelling pics is purely for aesthetics.

Pipbin · 17/10/2014 07:18

I can't understand why you wouldn't wear the knickers over the top of the belt. How else are you meant to go to the loo? Also, both items are made to be worn next to the skin.
As posters above have said, stockings and suspenders come from a time when they were a practical option, not something to be worn for sexy time or as fancy wear.

nohysteriahere · 17/10/2014 07:19

Under. Why overcomplicate things?

KneeQuestion · 17/10/2014 07:24

Knickers over suspender belt.

mkmjimmy · 17/10/2014 07:31

Knickers over belt. Much less chance of snagging tights that way.

LetsFaceTheMusicAndDance · 17/10/2014 07:32

Knickers over belt. Obviously. Also old enough to remember my grandmother wearing them under her enormous bloomer type things. No way would that have worked with any rolling the belt down to pee malarkey

RustyDalek · 17/10/2014 07:35

There's an American detective novel (early 60’s) where the question of whether it was murder or suicide rests on the fact that a suspender belt is worn under the knickers - and points to the murderer as a man who had no experience of undressing women and therefore didn't know this...

CatsCantTwerk · 17/10/2014 07:38

Knickers over belt. That is the only practical way.

MollyBdenum · 17/10/2014 07:52

Knickers over belt.

Catsmamma · 17/10/2014 08:01

suspenders under, NEVER over....unless you are a shop mannequin

only problem I have is an underwear set with the suspenders attached to the pants.....what's the deal there if you wear them when not lying down, surely the stockings work your pants off??

Thumbwitch · 17/10/2014 08:05

Suspenders under knickers here too. Couldn't see the point of wearing them over for precisely the weeing-issue mentioned. Otherwise you have to either undo the belt entirely, or unclip the suspenders from the stockings (PITA and inadvisable with too much alcohol on board)

Suspenders attached to knickers = Hmm. Designed by men with no thought for practicality, IMO.

Thumbwitch · 17/10/2014 08:07

As a clincher Grin to this argument - my mum used to wear a full body corset that had suspenders attached to the bottom for the stockings. OBVIOUSLY her knickers went over this corset, there wouldn't have been a hope in hell of her getting them under the corset (it was far too tight) and equally no way in hell that she would have been taking everything off or unclipping all her suspenders (3 or 4 each side, I can't remember) every time she needed a wee.

hackmum · 17/10/2014 08:10

Knickers go over. Isn't that obvious?

lookslikeacoconut · 17/10/2014 08:11

Suspender belt under, of course. It took a while to work it out, but it was less of a lightbulb moment than the hair grips/ bobby pins thing.
I had been putting them in with the straight edge next to my scalp. Then wondering why they slipped out.

Still blows my mind, that one! What the hell else am I doing wrong ?

TheHorseHasBolted · 17/10/2014 08:11

Under!

Idefix · 17/10/2014 08:16

I went to a girls school in the 80s that still taught etiquette classes. One of my lessons came from a book about how to dress. One section of the book was entitled Foundation Garments. Knickers deffo go over not under ;)
Would like to clarify this was the 1980s not 1880s.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 17/10/2014 08:23

Good, I'm glad people agree with me, I was beginning to think I'd made it up! As moln said, I thought once I'd said about the ease of taking them off they'd all say "oh, of course".

Perhaps it is just a gap between stockings being worn as leg coverings, rather than a sexy thing. Although I'd have thought having to unclip everything to get the knickers off would be more of a faff - would you do the stockings back up again after? Pushing them to one side sounds slightly hazardous to me, I'd think there'd be potential for springage of the elastic!

lookslike, perhaps it's because decorated ones tend to put the decoration on the wavy side, so they have to go the wrong way!
