to 'encourage' my dd to give up her hobby?

georgieporgie1 · 13/10/2014 20:53

My dd(7) has been doing a hobby very heavily for two years, including doing competitions, with a large amount of success (not a stealth boast, just setting the scene). However, for a number of reasons this success is likely to not continue, and I suspect it's a large part of why she has enjoyed the hobby.
It's a very expensive hobby, which we had no idea of when we got into it, and means we can't afford family holidays, affecting me, dh and dd(3). It also involves a lot of afternoons hanging around for dd(3) waiting for dd(7) to do her thing, when dd(3) would rather be playing at home.

Some of her school classmates have recently taken up the competitive side of the hobby, and now the competitiveness appears to be spilling over at school in a not very nice way. My dh and I for various reasons hate the competitions and wish we'd never got involved, and my dd is certainly nowhere near as enthusiastic as she was, and never wants to practise.

However, she wants to keep doing the competitions. Would I be unreasonable to 'encourage' her to just do the non competitive side of the hobby, or even to swap hobbies? She is interested in trying out some other hobbies, but we have no idea whether they would suit her.

StripyBanana -- Which sports can be enjouyed for fun and without silly expense?

Skipping.

Or, round here, canoeing: child canoe-club membership for the year is £25 with all equipment and insurance and pool sessions included. Brilliant value.

StripyBanana · 16/10/2014 13:03

Ooh we actually do have a reasonably priced canoe club. I looked into it as an adult pre kids but didnt follow through!
What age do they start?

My daughter wants to do ballet gym piano (we don't have one) and flute ..... We are low income!!

Downamongtherednecks · 16/10/2014 13:18

Waves to 500. Yes, the drinking cider in the park happy memories is how I convinced DH to shell out for the new dress/wig/shoes/poodle socks/tiara etc etc. She's not very advanced, but God Bless the teams as you qualify much more easily than solos. Maybe we should have a support thread for Irish dance families/other families involved in stupidly expensive activities for their dc.

OVienna · 16/10/2014 13:34

DD wants to do this. What do you guys reckon? Jive Pony.

Eastpoint · 16/10/2014 15:44

I'm sure that will help her standout when she fills in her personal statement - teamwork, tenacity & flexibility all demonstrated in one sport. Grin

BirdintheWings · 16/10/2014 16:10

Stripy -- here it's 8 years old and able to swim 25m.

StripyBanana · 16/10/2014 16:32

Thanks bird!

taxi4ballet · 16/10/2014 17:48

Don't know what the hobby is, and if the OP chooses not to let on, then that's fine by me.

Mind you, nobody's going to have to use much effort to work out what my dd spends her time doing!

mermaidstale · 16/10/2014 20:44

I guess it's beauty pageants and she obviously can't confess to that on here.

Butkin · 16/10/2014 20:56

Ovienna - we enjoyed watching the British vaulting team display at HOYS. I'd say they had to be really good gymnasts first and have equine rapport second but to be successful you'd need skills in both. Getting the right horse/trainer would be the most important thing.

Nofunkingworriesmate · 16/10/2014 21:23

Extreme circus skills?
If it's pageants those wigs are dam expensive, you can get cheaper ones on ebay

Ericaequites · 17/10/2014 18:08

It might be ice hockey. If your child is a goalie, the gear is outrageously expensive.

RickyDinkPanther · 17/10/2014 18:24

Can someone please explain the sock glue thing?

Hakluyt · 17/10/2014 18:31

Not sure, Ricky.

Do you know the secret handshake?

RickyDinkPanther · 17/10/2014 18:34

It's for making sock puppets, int it? Wink

Sock glue is basically a glue that you apply to the tops of socks and it holds them up so they don't fall down.

Hakluyt · 17/10/2014 19:42

Nooooooooooooooo!

Don't tell her, Pike!

RickyDinkPanther · 17/10/2014 22:12

Noooooo! Don't believe that.

Rugby players use string to keep their socks up. That's clearly how it's done. None of this glueing rubbish. There must be another plausible explanation...

Hakluyt · 17/10/2014 22:16

Footballers have ankle tape

UserNameUnderConstruc · 17/10/2014 22:34

You're Mama June aren't you? It has to be pageants. Dd has to be Honey Boo Boo. Its that or Quidditch.

dancestomyowntune · 18/10/2014 19:49

It is I tell us! Google it. Used mainly in Irish dancing but I know ballet mums that swear by it.
