To want to know what sort of crime someone's dad committed?

My son is friends with a nice little girl in primary school, and I talk to her mum from time to time. After she got to know me she volunteered the information that the girl's father was in jail. He's out now, and I've met him, and he's a nice enough bloke, though some people might find him a little scary. He's tall and muscular and gruffly spoken.

He was in jail for roughly three years. When I asked why he was in jail the mother said only "he got in a fight" but claimed it wasn't really his fault.

It occurred to me the other day that I know the family name (a highly unusual one, not Smith), and his case and sentencing must be a matter of public record. I could probably google him right now.

Would you do it? Can any good come of it?

I'm torn between curiosity and feeling I might be better off not knowing. Next time I run into him at the school gates I might not be able to look him in the eye. After all you don't go to jail for three years for "a fight"...

She could break in to his house and search for evidence? Or get some fake i.d. and apply for a CRB check in his name? < nosy helpful >

beakerandburette · 09/10/2014 14:35

Can you just tell us whether you are or you aren't going to google?

Stupidhead · 09/10/2014 14:50

Google!

3 years is an awfully long sentence for a fight. I know one guy in jail for historic sexual abuse (I know the victim) and he got 5 years. You can't google him due to (I think) him having a teenage son so there isn't a record.

Not that I'm saying your crim is a sex offender!!! Just that you might not find him. Try though, for us Smile

Blueandwhitelover · 09/10/2014 16:51

Oh for goodness sake, google and come back

NorrisCole · 09/10/2014 18:29

I need to know so I'm marking my place

TheOneWithTheHair · 09/10/2014 18:34

I need to know too now.

notapizzaeater · 09/10/2014 18:39

I'd actually ask them outright (then google)

SevenZarkSeven · 09/10/2014 18:50

I would google.

I don't understand the picture the OP posted Confused

I know people who have been in prison for various things (not many! but a couple) so really it would be pure nosiness on my part. It's interesting, isn't it. Unusual. And if it's something really iffy, worth knowing.

HibiscusIsland · 09/10/2014 20:36

What an irritating thread Hmm

cees · 09/10/2014 20:42

Come on girl, GOOGLE.

fuzzpig · 09/10/2014 20:44

I'm confused.

ChameleonCircuit · 09/10/2014 20:45

23/19 is child contamination, but it's what DH yelled at me the first time breastfed DD pooed in the bath with him. Grin

Come on, OP, don't keep us in suspense!

Glittertwins · 09/10/2014 20:49

Google it, I've done this before now too. I won't post up details as it will probably out me and the children too. The surname is very uncommon.

SpidersDontWashTheirHands · 09/10/2014 21:11

I'd have googled the second I got home

ScarlettBanana · 09/10/2014 21:14

YABU for being so bloody annoying and not returning.

ihatethecold · 09/10/2014 21:34

I'm sure it's 32/19. Confused

Twentythree9teen · 10/10/2014 00:44
  • it's definitely 23/19, see pixar.wikia.com/CDA
  • I haven't googled yet, I've read all your posts but not made a decision. I might let a friend google on my behalf and give me a précis.
  • I will start a new thread if I ever find out, I promise. Sorry to have frustrated you.

If he spent 3 years in jail the actual sentence will have been 5 or 6 years. That is quite a long sentence.

PhaedraIsMyName · 10/10/2014 01:28

Sorry , I have now read the thread, apologies to everyone else who pointed out serving 3 years means a much longer actual sentence.

I would Google him.

MollyHooper · 10/10/2014 01:44

There's no contact with them except casually at the school gate/park; he never looks after my child, I never look after his

In that case I would just leave it.

MummyBeerest · 10/10/2014 02:02

How is this a hard decision? I Google absolutely everything and everyone. Just to pass the time!

I've just moved and have Googled all of my neighbours. They're nice, I'm just nosy. Better than using binoculars.
