To wonder about all these hobbies that your DHs seem to have?

Inspired by a number of freds where the OP states that her DH has a hobby that (invariably) takes up all their time.

I always wonder what that hobby could be. Is it just me?

If your DH has a hobby, please can you tell me what it is so I can go to sleep :o?

TIA

Mine has sheep dog trialling, and horses (polocrosse, as we're in Australia). In his defence, he manages to fit most of his training in around his work time, because he's a farmer.

I'm the crazed runner in this family, and I throw a much bigger strop if I don't get my mental health running time in every couple of days.

Astronomy, he spends his evenings in the back garden with a flask of coffee and a big telescope while I get the TV and sofa.

This sounds ideal to me Grin.

Cycling. Luckily he cycles to work 20 miles a day in all weathers so gets it out of his system. But he still does go out with his cycling club once a week in the evening cycling a further 100 miles or so.
Also he occassionally, goes for a cycle race so is gone for the day at the weekend or for the whole weekend...that's about twice a year though.
He also plays squash occassionally.
Don't begrudge him this time off at all as he works hard, does lots of housework, and it makes him super fit!

The only downsides are the amount of equipment this needs, the garden shed is full of telescope, stand, battery pack, accessories, folding tables and chairs for when he goes off to meet his fellow stargazers on top of a hill somewhere and the house is full of cameras, chargers, laptops, cables (on top of the usual amount we have anyway as we are a gadgetty household).

Singing - he's a very good tenor and has lessons every two weeks, although he's stopping those for a while after the next round of concerts as DC1 is due in a month.

We met through singing so I don't mind too much - however it was a little wearing when he got a part which involved a 3 hour drive (there and then the same back) and a stop overnight for rehearsals every week a couple of years back.

Sodding, bastard golf.

It takes up all his time. When he isnt at golf, or the driving range, he is planning golfing holidays, or watching it on the telly.

My kids are mostly older teens and have their own lives and hobbies. The youngest (8) goes to the football with DP and some cycling and mountain biking, or cycles while he runs. But even my youngest has his own pals in our street so he's quite able to amuse himself.

DP normally does a few hours cycling or running on a Sunday while I'm in church (comes with me occasionally), or during the day (self employed and works from home). On occasions when it has started getting out of hand, I have put my foot down. He does his music and motorbike in the evenings.

I have my writing group and coffee mornings and general crafting, baking, gardening, pottering stuff I really enjoy though.

We do try to make Sunday afternoon and evening proper family time, we quite often go out somewhere. To be honest, there are six people in our house so there is always someone to hang out with if you want a bit of company.

Gym, running, playing football and cricket.

Video games - either the xbox or PS3.
Watching sci-fi type movies or TV shows - he'll happily watch an entire series in a day.
Going to the pub, if that counts!

I can do all of those with him, though, so it's never really an issue for us.

Rokenswife · 08/10/2014 10:37

Fishing but it doesn't take up enough of his time for my liking!

tipp2chicago · 08/10/2014 10:45

St John Ambulance. Usually one night a week, but as he's been training for his EMT qualification this year, it was 2-3 nights a week, plus weekends away for lectures etc, plus duties. Drives me insane. I do take off to a Spa on a groupon deal every so often though.

ClapHandsIfYouBelieveInFatties · 08/10/2014 10:45

Mine is a gym bunny. Means he's got a great body but a tendency to piss off just when I need him. :/ He loves working out.

None at the moment luckily. But I daftly agreed to buy him a new drum kit for Christmas so I fear everyone in the street will know what his hobby is in the new year. Confused

hellsbellsmelons · 08/10/2014 10:54

My OH first passion is Sailing.
He also loves fixing things.
And he has his man den (garage) where he goes to re-arrange all the shite in there when me and my DD are watching some old crap on the TV.
He's not good a sitting still.

hellsbellsmelons · 08/10/2014 10:55

Oh yeah - and the gym!

FreakinScaryCaaw · 08/10/2014 10:55

Salsa Jiving but I like that too. He can go every week but my shifts mean I miss a few.

Butterpuff · 08/10/2014 10:55

tipp2chicago I used to do that. It takes up so, so much time when you become one of the reliable ones for weekend duties. Fabulous to do, but I now think you have to be a saint to keep it up.

HelpMeGetOutOfHere · 08/10/2014 10:59

Fishing
Rugby

Spends all weekend either at rugby (playing watching coaching) or all weekend at some carp lake.

I don't mind most of the time as means I can do what I want with dd. But sometimes I'd like a break as well and not just a weekend if shopping cooking and cleaning.

GingerSkin · 08/10/2014 11:24

Trains,
"I am not a trainspotter, I am a train enthusiast". Yeah right, the trouble is he wants me to go on trips with him to strange stations and then to look excited. I can either go or I can look interested but not both

Grin Grin welshpixie this is my OH too. He's a geek through and through and when he tells me he's met other "train enthusiasts" at the station, he is always telling me how sad and geeky they are....I'm really thinking "you're a geek too!!"

GingerSkin · 08/10/2014 11:25

Bold fail due to a random train word Blush

Miggsie · 08/10/2014 11:26

car maintenance - he does this while I do my degree studies, suits us both.

Idontseeanysontarans · 08/10/2014 11:27

Cricket. The occasional playing of but mostly coaching. Plus he's involved in the admin side so it's a year round activity.
He also has a shed he likes to rearrange every now and then Grin
Him and DS go hiking, DD1 has started to join them now. Photography is a shared hobby between us all.

motherinferior · 08/10/2014 11:28

My partner has done t'ai chi for decades (since long before I met him). Usually this just involves one evening a week; sometimes a bit of a weekend, occasionally he teaches on a course over a weekend or for a week of the holidays (in which case he takes the Inferiorettes with him).

I sing in a chamber choir one night a week.
