To wonder about all these hobbies that your DHs seem to have?

Inspired by a number of freds where the OP states that her DH has a hobby that (invariably) takes up all their time.

I always wonder what that hobby could be. Is it just me?

If your DH has a hobby, please can you tell me what it is so I can go to sleep :o?

TIA

My DH, plays golf, plays Squash, is a stalker obsessive Man United fan and goes to all home matches unless I put my foot down and most overseas away games. In fact my DH is sports mad and would watch any sport with the exception of figure skating apparently Hmm

I can't complain though because I am a bit of a fitness nut myself. My hobby is keeping fit. I spend at least 8 hours a week training.

ToastyFingers · 08/10/2014 08:46

Krav,
And Boxing. And the occasionally session of MMA.
oh, joy.

JCDenton · 08/10/2014 08:52

Gaming, football and learning foreign languages, which is a relatively new one. Got pretty decent at Italian for our holiday and managed to get us into a 'full' posh restaurant. Now learning Spanish for next year (not sure we're even going to Spain yet Hmm)

I though "having a time consuming hobby" was usually a euphemism for "being a man child who plays GTA for hours at a time not realising this is not an activity for an adult human being"

Cycling. It used to be MTB but he decided that was too time consuming since we had the DC and he doesn't like spending as much time away from them, so he switched to road. He tries to fit it in round when the DC and I are doing something else, but generally it's 4 hours on a weekend day. I run, which I fit in around work (lunchtime) and on a weekend day so we hobby in shifts. I used to mtb as well, but again stopped as it takes up too much time. We are looking forward to when the DC are big enough to mtb with us.

DH makes incredibly intricate and beautiful model boats, gardens, shoots, does jewellery making, silversmithing and wood turning and is fantastic at DIY.

He spends hours in the workshop, but to be fair he does more than his fair share round the house and garden and does a lot of the cooking. He's very good at cooking.

elportodelgato · 08/10/2014 08:58

Rock climbing, skiing, canoeing, sailing. All fairly infrequent and fully negotiated so I have similar time off for drinking wine and sitting in a spa.

Sleepy our DD is 11 months old. DH trains (Rugby) on week nights when she's in bed. He plays matches on a Saturday afternoon. We have no family help so I have DD while he plays. It causes a bit of resentment as I have her every weekday too, so it feels like my weekend doesn't start until Saturday night now. He always says that I can spend Sunday doing a hobby of my choice, but that means we'd have no family time at all.

ThatBloodyWoman · 08/10/2014 09:02

Nothing.
I'm the one who's always slinking off for various stuff like running, yoga, canoeing, day trips to places connected with my interests, and, soon, hopefully cycling regularly too.
I'd like him to take something up, then I wouldn't feel guilty when I'm off again.....

trice · 08/10/2014 09:04

Target shooting, walking and weight training here. Although he has previously done running, archery, photography and boxing.

I knit and sew and love gaming. We are an equal opportunity hobby household.

SenatusPopulusqueRomanorum · 08/10/2014 09:05

Electronics.

Spindarella · 08/10/2014 09:06

Guitars. Buying them, broswing for them on th einternet, going to guitar shops and looking at them, playing them.

In terms of something which actually takes him out of the house - nothing! I actualy think something like that would be good for him as he could do with some outside interests I think.

LittleBairn · 08/10/2014 09:07

Geeky roll playing games (meets up with others to play cant play alone) and making and painting models. Constantly watching ebay and forum to collect the geeky stuff.

LittleBairn · 08/10/2014 09:09

I should add I read, knit and garden lot. It doesn't sound like it but I am not retired I'm under 30. Grin

ThatBloodyWoman · 08/10/2014 09:11

Little the whole concept of that fascinates me.
It sounds like I'd like to like the idea, but I can't get past the oddness.
I just can't get my head round it!

IShallCallYouSquishy · 08/10/2014 09:15

Cycling for my DH.

He is however very considerate about it. When he goes out on summer evenings it's once DD is in bed and I'm BFing DS to sleep.

At weekends he goes at breakfast time so we still get the day as a family.

He does sometimes go out at other times but always checks if I mind. Only once of twice have I ever said I would rather he didn't and it was no problem.

cherrybombxo · 08/10/2014 09:16

WalkingWolf

Oh god, I briefly dated someone who played Warhammer and ignored me every second weekend to play it with his friends

Note, "briefly dated" Grin

needsacuppanow · 08/10/2014 09:17

My dh loves tinkering with his pc and playing video games which is fantastic because:

  1. these are home based hobbies so he is always here with dc and I can go out when I want!
  2. he does them in his study mostly so I get the lounge and the tv to myself most evenings. Should add that I love him dearly and do love the evenings we spend together but he is so loud and has terrible taste in tv!
LittleBairn · 08/10/2014 09:19

bloodywonan my DHs geeky game thing? I try to understand it too, it seems fun and clever but no I just don't 'get it'.
If its the fact that I'm a 70 year old woman trapped in a 29 year old body, well my DH claims I was middle aged when he met me at 22...

needsacuppanow · 08/10/2014 09:20

Littlebairn: I also read, knit and garden. I love to bake too. I'm a bit older than you at 40, but nowhere near retirement.

KingJoffreysBloodshotEye · 08/10/2014 09:21

Warhammer, D&D and Magic The Gathering.

I join in sometimes.

JamaicanMeCrazy · 08/10/2014 09:22

Dps hobby is watching films/random tv series on Netflix/amazon. Luckily that's my idea of a good time too so we do it together. It also involves no time out of the house Grin

emsyj · 08/10/2014 09:29

DH is a volunteer crew member with the lifeboats. It seems to take up a lot of time... I can't complain though, I go out a lot (3 social engagements this week, that's about average for me) so we are about even in terms of child-free 'me' time.

Littlegreyauditor · 08/10/2014 09:31

Guitars...many guitars. Polishing them, re-stringing, strumming, smelling them. Planning to learn how to make them.
Occasional golf.
Cooking elaborate things. Baking. Foostering round his sourdough starter.

I horse. I horse lots, in the interests of balance.

CrabbyTheCrabster · 08/10/2014 09:32

RunDougal I know - I count myself very lucky! Grin He loves food and cooking too so is very often thinking about that as well.

Seriously I don't know why but "does he whittle alone?" made me Grin Nothing wrong with a good bit of whittling - I bought DD a terrifyingly sharp knife last Christmas for just that purpose.

Well this thread has solved one mystery for me at least... where the hordes of MAMILS (middle aged men in lycra) appear from every weekend in Surrey to clog up fill the lanes and roads of the olympic cycling route and hold me up. They're all mumsnetters' DHs! Grin

CrabbyTheCrabster · 08/10/2014 09:43

There was an odd day when all three of these hobbies collided when a set of important/special stamps were discovered on a parcel containing a spare part for the lawn mower. GrinI don't think he'd ever had such a happy day as that.

This made me Grin Grin too!

Some very funny posts on this thread.
