To have binned DP's microwave?

Spent all day in hospital with a head injury so feeling ill, tired and emotional.

DP cooked fish in my house last night. He's left the microwave filthy and stinking of fish that was out of date when he cooked it. It's stunk my whole house out and the smell has nearly made me vomit and burst into tears.

So I used every ounce of strength and threw the microwave into the wheely bin.

He's gonna kill me, he's had it since he was eighteen and it was lent to me on the condition I look after it. It was on its last legs but he doesn't like throwing stuff out and he'll also be upset that it was just tossed and not recycled.

AIBU to have binned it rather than clean it? I'm vegetarian and I hate the smell of fish above anything.

If it meant so much to him he should have lovingly sponge cleaned it out after cooking fish!

You were U to actually throw it away OP, putting it outside would have been better.

But head injury and rancid fish smell gives you a bit of leeway!

GahLinDah · 28/09/2014 12:36

I can't believe you are being given advice to clean it. In the same circumstances I could see myself losing my rag too and putting it in the bin.
Being me, I'd slope out the next morning to retrieve it and put it in the shed or something though. I don't stay cross for long.

It is the most horrendous smell, we used to have a culprit that would use the work microwave to heat up her fish. She was really put out when spoken to about it.
The smell used to creep around the area, and it sticks to things! You can't get it out of fabrics.

FannyFifer · 28/09/2014 12:42

I would have thrown it out as well.

Hope you are feeling better today.

Inertia · 28/09/2014 13:05

He's clearly not that bothered about keeping it in good condition if he didn't bother cleaning it.

I've actually had another thought- you could tell him it was giving off a really awful smell, so you thought it had developed a fault and you didn't want to run the risk of an electrical fire. Then when he says it's just fish, you can say that it couldn't possibly be just that because it was so bad and anyway he always makes such a big fuss about it being clean, so there must have been a fault.

YABU

If this were the other way round and DH throwing out DW's microwave, would be EA and LTB

SuperflousBuns · 28/09/2014 13:30

Yabu but I'd be tempted to just say the thing blew up and that's why its in the bin.

So, I've fished it out of the bin. I've bagged it. I've phoned him and told him he has either clean it outside or to take it away as I don't want it in my house.

Surprisingly, he's told me I can get rid of it if I want to. Clearly having to clean it is a step too far. He's also banned from cooking fish in my house ever again. This isn't the first time he's done it and made the house stink.

Yabu, it is not yours to throw away.

HappyYoni · 28/09/2014 14:19

Oops sorry x post!

MokunMokun · 28/09/2014 19:57

I hate the smell of fish too.

musicalendorphins2 · 28/09/2014 23:08

Good outcome. I hope you are feeling better now. Try lighting some unscented candles to clear the air.

AdmitYouKnowImRight · 28/09/2014 23:11

I hope he bins you too - you are just so needy and labour intensive.

Aeroflotgirl · 28/09/2014 23:14

admit what a horrid thing to say! You sound like a lovely person. Op is ill, and as she admits quite emotional, I bet you have your moments fgs.

Bulbasaur · 28/09/2014 23:29

Concussions will make you moody and irrational. Glad you got it solved.

I'd ban fish from the house if it bugs you.

That said, in the future, if a microwave is smelly. A cup of water with some vanilla extract heated up in there will take the smell away nicely from the microwave. I made the mistake of cooking hot dogs, and they stank up the house. Vanilla water worked perfectly. If that doesn't work, get some febreze.

AlpacaLypse · 08/10/2014 23:46

He DOES know he's banned from ever cooking fish ever again in or anywhere near your presence especially while you're pregnant but as a matter of fact all the time for evermore so jolly well there? (my words not your btw!)

Nohootingchickenssleeping · 09/10/2014 00:00

What? I'm not pregnant Alpaca.

On a practical note.

A bowl of water with several slices of lemon done for 10 minutes on high power in the microwave gets rid of even the worst fishy smells both inside the microwave and in the house.

I am not suggesting that you should clean it though OP!

Nohootingchickenssleeping · 09/10/2014 15:10

I would normally be happy to clean it but it was just too much when I was already ill. Much better now though Grin
