Wibu to take ds to a&e?

Ds 3yo has a sudden temp of 38.9° having gone up from 38.7° at 6 pm, calpol hasn't helped any and he isn't fully waking up but he's been throwing up while half awake and sort of choking on it. He's really pale and hot to touch, shivery but not clammy.

Phoned nhs24 and they said to monitor him over night and arrange an out of hours visit to hospital tomorrow. But he's not waking up properly to be sick, I'm petrified he's going to choke and kill himself if I fall asleep and his temp is climbing.

Wibu to take him to a&e even though the nhs24 doctor person said not to? His not being able to wake properly is scaring me, he's never had so much as d&v before, apart from colds he's always very healthy so i might be over reacting?

Take him. Sounds like he needs seeing, especially with the not waking thing. Always trust your instincts.

LadyLuck10 · 21/09/2014 00:15

Take him . You won't be at peace if you don't. Hope he feels better.

mausmaus · 21/09/2014 00:16

take him
poor you, it sounds scary.
hope he's better soon.

OooOooTheMonkey · 21/09/2014 00:16

Agree. Take him now if you are worried. You know best. Hope he's ok Thanks

hollie84 · 21/09/2014 00:16

Can you wake him?

PrettyPictures92 · 21/09/2014 00:17

Ok, will get him ready now then, just wasn't sure if it was normal or not cause both dc have never really been sick unless you count a brief stomach bug my dd had a couple years ago, and even then she was running about playing fine Confused

Being unable to wake him makes me think you should take him.

AnotherStitchInTime · 21/09/2014 00:18

Put him in bed with you propped up on his side. Strip him down to his pants under a light sheet. When was his last dose of Calpol? You can alternate with Ibuprofen if the temperature is climbing between doses. Although fever in itself is not necessarily a worrying symptom, it is part of his bodies mechanism for fighting the bug.

VeryLittleGravitasIndeed · 21/09/2014 00:18

Trust your instincts. I was listening to an interview with a pediatrician who works in A&E and he said that when parents come in saying "this isn't right, my child isn't ok" they ALWAYS take it seriously even if nothing obvious presents. You know your own child best.

LondonRocks · 21/09/2014 00:18

Good luck OP.

sandgrown · 21/09/2014 00:19

Take him just to get him checked over. Hope he is ok x

kahori · 21/09/2014 00:19

I'd take him in too. We've had quite a few D&v episodes since the dc started school but never with a high temp.

AgentZigzag · 21/09/2014 00:19

Definitely take him, poor little mite.

Hope he's OK Thanks

WorraLiberty · 21/09/2014 00:19

I would definitely take him

I don't know anything about temps as I've never owned a thermometer but the fact he's not waking properly to be sick, would ring alarm bells with me.

Even if he does what most little buggers kids do and becomes totally alert as soon as he gets to A&E, it doesn't matter.

Hope he's ok Thanks

gamerchick · 21/09/2014 00:20

Well his temp isn't awful.. certainly nothing I would stress about and one of my kids does the puking thing in his sleep. I would just put him in the big bed with me with a little lamp and a big bowl and accept little sleep tonight.

However... hospitals never mind younglings and you can't put a price on peace of mind so I would say take him if your instincts are telling you to.

Good luck.

PumpkinBones · 21/09/2014 00:22

I would take him. If nothing else, taking a child to a&e seems to act as a magical cure as they are often so much better by the time you see a doctor Smile

PrettyPictures92 · 21/09/2014 00:22

He wakes in the sense that he knows you're talking to him and responds yes or no if you ask him a question but doesn't open his eyes properly and falls asleep again pretty quickly. Just called a taxi so I'll be at the hospital soon, dp staying with dd (who's not showing any signs of sickness).

Dear OP,

Unfortunately NHS 24 is no longer staffed by qualified nurses but by trained call handlers who follow a computer algorithm. It is difficult to assess someone over the phone even if you are qualified. You are in the best position to judge and while it is probably just a nasty viral illness if you are worried about your child's safety you should definitely seek qualified medical assessment. If possible avoid A&E at this time on a weekend. Do you have a 24 hour walk in near you or could you call your out of hours GP number for an appointment? If neither option is available then take him to A&E as they would rather send a not too sick child home with advice than not see a really sick one. Good luck and I hope things are better in the morning.

gamerchick · 21/09/2014 00:24

Take something to be sick in in the taxi so you don't get stung with a charge. Good luck.

thewomaninwhite · 21/09/2014 00:24

I am glad that you are taking your DS op. I hope that you get seen soon and your son can get whatever treatment is needed.

jellybelly701 · 21/09/2014 00:25

Yes I would take him, not waking properly to be sick is concerning. Did you mention this when you called them?

PrettyPictures92 · 21/09/2014 00:26

He had calpol at 9 by the mouth syringe thing cause he wouldn't wake, I've put his jacket and shoes on without him stirring much (apart from briefly opening his eyes and crying when I turned the light on to see properly). Taxi should be here in a couple minutes, hoping the fresh air will wake him a bit

Does he normally wake easily in the middle of the night? He could just be very sleepy, not uncommon in unwell children with a fever.

Look at the traffic light table from NICE here.

If he exhibits red features then A&E straight away. He may have some amber features from what you have said.

If you can rouse him slightly and get another dose of calpol/brufen into him and wait half an hour to see that would be better than dragging an unwell child out of their safe, warm home to A&E on a Saturday night. If that doesn't work then A&E.
