Wibu to take ds to a&e?

Ds 3yo has a sudden temp of 38.9° having gone up from 38.7° at 6 pm, calpol hasn't helped any and he isn't fully waking up but he's been throwing up while half awake and sort of choking on it. He's really pale and hot to touch, shivery but not clammy.

Phoned nhs24 and they said to monitor him over night and arrange an out of hours visit to hospital tomorrow. But he's not waking up properly to be sick, I'm petrified he's going to choke and kill himself if I fall asleep and his temp is climbing.

Wibu to take him to a&e even though the nhs24 doctor person said not to? His not being able to wake properly is scaring me, he's never had so much as d&v before, apart from colds he's always very healthy so i might be over reacting?

I would have taken him too, hope all is ok this morning.

I've taken my then 1yo DS in a similar state before and I was really scared. He perked up right as the doctors turned up to look at him but I'd do it again as, like a previous poster said he just wasn't right....

Ledkr · 21/09/2014 07:32

We'll unless they are sleeping it looks said they kept them in.
I find the new NHs direct system pretty frightening tbh. I've spoken to them twice recently with pretty worrying symptoms and felt as if I was speaking to a small child.
They can it step outside their script and when ending the call I was told to "ring back if you have a fit or become unconscious" Hmm

lucjam · 21/09/2014 07:45

Ledkr how ridiculous. Rong back if you have a fit. Doh.

Hope all okay OP. Not liking the light plus temp and difficult to wake doesn't sound great.

Take care

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 21/09/2014 07:51

Hope he's ok.

I'd have wanted him seen by a Dr too with those symptoms

Xx

Rachie1986 · 21/09/2014 07:52

How are things now??

minibmw2010 · 21/09/2014 08:31

Hope it turned out to be nothing too serious and your mind is at rest now

iamdivergent · 21/09/2014 08:46

Hope ds is OK pretty Thanks

x2boys · 21/09/2014 08:49

I agree ledkr and they always ask the same questions are you having trouble breathing and are you bleeding heavily regardless of what you need advice for I hope op and Lo are OK .

TeWiSavesTheDay · 21/09/2014 09:02

Hope he's been checked out and all is well OP, you were absolutely right to take a child you can't wake to a&e.

Musicaltheatremum · 21/09/2014 09:25

I squirm when I read some of the OOH calls that have happened over the weekend. Some of the initial triaging is appalling.
It is much safer to see a child than not.

Morning all, ds is going to be fine :) they admitted him straight away and took blood tests before the nurse thought to look in his ear (not her fault, the doctor told me with his symptoms they were checking for viral meningitis and getting blood as fast as possible was priority). Turns out he's just got a rather bad ear infection though.

He woke up properly when they were taking blood and put a IV into him so he'd get enough fluids as he was a bit dehydrated. He's going to be able to come home today, they just wanted to monitor him to make sure it wasn't anything worse. So thank you everyone Flowers

Brilliant news.

AnotherStitchInTime · 21/09/2014 09:38

Glad he is ok. Hope the ear infection gets better soon.

mausmaus · 21/09/2014 09:41

phew
good to hear the update!
you absolutely did the right thing, dc will be bouncing around driving everyone mad in no time.

TeWiSavesTheDay · 21/09/2014 09:43

That's great! Hope he feels better with some fluids and antibiotics.

Trumpton · 21/09/2014 09:44

Oh bless. I have been lurking through the night and thinking about you.

TeaAndALemonTart · 21/09/2014 09:45

Glad you trusted your instincts. Ear aches are really painful.

Nishky · 21/09/2014 09:47

Good to hear. Hope he starts to feel better.

I took ds to A&E when he was three. He perked up when he arrived and I told the doctor I was really embarrassed- her response ' what is really embarrassing is when you are a doctor and you do it, I was here with my two year old last week in same circumstances'

If in doubt go, is my motto.

merlehaggard · 21/09/2014 09:48

You def did the right thing. Hope he's ok soon. x

Tipsykisses · 21/09/2014 09:50

Very pleased to hear that he's going to be ok pretty !!

Thanks for updating , I was wondering how you both are .

It can be frightening with a young child on your own in a&e when you don't know what's wrong , I had a similar experience with one of mine a few years ago and I was worried sick.

I'm sure he will feel better very soon now he's had some fluids & medicine.x

KenAdams · 21/09/2014 09:53

Well done for trusting your instincts OP. Glad he's being looked after.

CromerSutra · 21/09/2014 09:53

So pleased he is on the mend x. Ear infections are awful aren't they?

PrettyPictures92 · 21/09/2014 09:53

First time he's ever been properly ill, apart from colds, so it scared the crap out of me. The poor pediatric nurse had him throw up over her when she was helping me get him into the bed with the bars on the side, it was amazing how calmly she handled that! They let me sleep in the family room across the hall and have said the doctor will check him around 11ish and we'll probably be discharged as he's looking a bit better this morning, awake and alert at least but grumpy and still got a temp (that's thankfully gone down to 38.6°)

Fantastic, you can never be too sure with chikdren you have to err on tge side of caution, especially not waking up properly properly!

Aeroflotgirl · 21/09/2014 09:55

No they don't mind young children at all
