Wibu to take ds to a&e?

Ds 3yo has a sudden temp of 38.9° having gone up from 38.7° at 6 pm, calpol hasn't helped any and he isn't fully waking up but he's been throwing up while half awake and sort of choking on it. He's really pale and hot to touch, shivery but not clammy.

Phoned nhs24 and they said to monitor him over night and arrange an out of hours visit to hospital tomorrow. But he's not waking up properly to be sick, I'm petrified he's going to choke and kill himself if I fall asleep and his temp is climbing.

Wibu to take him to a&e even though the nhs24 doctor person said not to? His not being able to wake properly is scaring me, he's never had so much as d&v before, apart from colds he's always very healthy so i might be over reacting?

Ah cross post, see you have called a taxi. Hope he feels better soon.

PrettyPictures92 · 21/09/2014 00:28

Yeah I mentioned it when I called, they asked if he was alert and breathing normally and I said he was breathing slightly heavily and wouldn't wake properly or opening his eyes but was responding when I talked. Thanks for the support everyone Thanks

I probably wouldn't take him to A&E but I wouldn't sleep either. I'd stay up all night and watch him. His temperature's not horrendous and it's not that surprising he's difficult to rouse in the middle of the night when he would normally be asleep. I'd take a watchful waiting approach.

Failing that out of hours GP is probably a safer option on a Saturday night. A&E is grim with drunks about now.

ByeByeButterfly · 21/09/2014 00:34

Take him.

I honestly believe it's better to be safe than sorry and he's still very young (young enough not to express how he feels articulately to an adult).

If it's just a fever they'll find out and send you on your merry way but it's best to be safe than sorry.

I'd also be worried about him not waking up properly too.

If he's limp and wont respond at all call an ambulance.

Spiritedwolf · 21/09/2014 01:36

I hope he's ok, you're doing the right thing. xx

You can see what he's like, the person over the phone can't.

MonterayJack · 21/09/2014 02:02

You're in the right place. Dd had similar symptoms with rotovirus at about 18 months. GP came out twice. Second time had her admitted. We were in an isolation room for a few days but symptoms began to settle after 24 hours. Hope ds is soon on the mend. Its so scary when they are so unwell.

MiscellaneousAssortment · 21/09/2014 02:12

Hope all goes well at the hospital

SoonToBeSix · 21/09/2014 02:16

iK8 I would like to think
Children's A and E isn't full of drunks!
Hope your ds is ok op.

Thumbwitch · 21/09/2014 02:23

Not unreasonable at all. I've taken DS1 when he's had a fever and floppiness, and been unresponsive - neither time was I made to feel bad for bringing him in, even though in both cases he was sent home after a few hours (waiting for a urine test result). And yes, in the first case, he did seem to miraculously revive while in the hospital waiting room! but still had a temp.

BertieBotts · 21/09/2014 02:24

IME they wake up properly when they need to be sick, never had the half asleep half choking thing. You've done the right thing.

BertieBotts · 21/09/2014 02:25

Also are you using an ear or mouth thermometer? The mouth ones you need to add about 1 degree to so his temperature could be higher than you think.

PiperIsOrange · 21/09/2014 02:28

Yanbu, if you think he needs to be seen then as his mum who knows him the best then take him.

LittleRedDinosaur · 21/09/2014 02:56

Hope everything's ok OP. For what it's worth, I've worked in A&Exa

LittleRedDinosaur · 21/09/2014 02:57

(Oops) and I think you're being very sensible.

PepsiTwirl · 21/09/2014 03:15

KnackeredMuchly · 21/09/2014 03:32

I would take him too, he's DC3 so you're not being PFB.

good luck Thanks

Tipsykisses · 21/09/2014 06:53

Poor little mite , I think you've done the right thing Op , I wouldn't hesitate to take one of mine if they were not waking properly to vomit & the fact that he didn't like the light switched on would make me think he most certainly needs seeing sooner rather than later .

I hope you've been seen & that your Ds feels better very soon. Xx

MummyPig24 · 21/09/2014 06:53

Hope everything is alright!
