This is continuation of the previous threads. I'm hoping this can be a thread for civilised debate and discussion from people on both sides of the voting line, and where undecided voters can come and chat and get opinions.

Some of the previous threads have gone downhill. So for the sake of a good discussion can everyone please try to avoid nasty comments about the other side? References to Nazis, people being selfish, stupid, thick etc don't help anyone. This vote will be over and the votes counted in about 48 hours. After that we have to pull together whatever the outcome.

OP posts:
WildThong · 17/09/2014 22:25

Oh I so hope that's true squoosh

squoosh · 17/09/2014 22:26

I would hope there is a hefty dose of sentimentality of both sides, we are talking about people's national identity. People's not automaton's.

PansOtherPeople · 17/09/2014 22:27

it's the link between taxes and voting that explains why non-residents don't get to vote. You aren't paying in, and don't get the benefit of decisions, so that's fine, whatever Aussies choose to do otherwise. Obv 16-18 yo needs explaining re 'age of responsibility', BUT...as we know it's this group of resident Scots that will prob hold the flip in the final vote.....really interesting.

SirChenjin · 17/09/2014 22:28

Agree wholeheartedly Rose - well said.

Tinkerball · 17/09/2014 22:28

UNLESS the margin is 15% for king Alec, its worth squat

Well you might want to believe that but whoever gets the most votes wins, no margins necessary. And if its Yes - then that will be worth more than "squat", whether you agree or not.

squoosh · 17/09/2014 22:28

It is decidedly so WildThong.

NCforAye · 17/09/2014 22:28

Hasn't there been a statement to the effect of the Union Jack not changing in the event of a No vote?

Though, on the subject of flags, someone in the town where I work put up a big BT sign in their window... plus a St George's Cross! Confused

R.e. nationality - if you were born British you will remain British. You can't have citizenship forced upon you or wrenched from you. rUK may disallow people from holding dual Scottish-British citizenship (so you may have to choose one or the other), but no-one will have to take Scottish citizenship, and thus be forced to sacrifice their British citizenship.

This was discussed a few gazillion threads back, but I would be SO surprised if rUK barred people from having Scottish-British citizenship. Given that they allow multiple citizenships of all other combinations, it would essentially be a blackballing of Scotland that would, I think, go beyond the (reasonable!) justification of looking after rUK interests. I also think it would sit poorly with people in rUK whose families / friends in Scotland might have to choose between being disenfranchised in their place of residence and losing the citizenship they were born with.

Question for any people who know more about international relations stuff than I do - are there any countries in the world which only allow dual citizenship "selectively"? I know that some countries (e.g. China) do not allow dual citizenship at all, but I haven't heard of a country that says to its citizens: you can be x and y but not x and z.

EarthWindFire · 17/09/2014 22:29

I agree Rose

PansOtherPeople · 17/09/2014 22:30

ummm not all fiesty-like at all. That's the sort of judgement/label thrown when you simply don't like what someone else is saying. IF I was posting as a NO, then that would never have been said by you.

NCforAye · 17/09/2014 22:31

I took so long typing (and listening to therapeutic Stan Rogers sea shanties...) that I missed quite a few posts.

I do appreciate that beyond the talk of passports and citizenship there is the more nebulous question of national identity and I do absolutely have sympathy for those who have real anxiety about that.

squoosh · 17/09/2014 22:31

I think Danish passport holders are prohibited from having citizenship in any other country. This may have changed recently though. I will check.

EarthWindFire · 17/09/2014 22:31

Hasn't there been a statement to the effect of the Union Jack not changing in the event of a No vote?

No there hasn't. It was said previously, that it would be up to the rUK to decide.

WildThong · 17/09/2014 22:32

Though, on the subject of flags, someone in the town where I work put up a big BT sign in their window... plus a St George's Cross!

Maybe they are English and trying to show support for the Union?

deeedeee · 17/09/2014 22:33

I decided weeks ago that i didn't have the energy to waste arguing with this thread. So I'm going to stick to that decision. I hope you all find the next few days bearable and can manage some sleep. Best Wishes to all, hope you all keep your jobs and houses and sanity. Best of luck, genuinely.

SirChenjin · 17/09/2014 22:34

That's how you're coming across Pan. Can you please try and understand that trying to belittle people with "heartstringy" and "sentimentality" when people feel so strongly about the possible loss of their identity, nationality and break up of their country is pretty off.

WildThong · 17/09/2014 22:34

pan that's not true, your tone was challenging

squoosh · 17/09/2014 22:34

Ah, apparently Danes will be allowed dual citizenship from summer 2015. New law just passed.

OneNight · 17/09/2014 22:34

It's been very interesting being on these threads with all of these people mainly women debating passionately such a large issue.

I recall that my great grandfather a poor man had one luxury in his life and that was the weekend newspaper. He used to spend Monday night translating it in front of the fire for my great grandmother (who never had any English) so that she could hear a view of what was happening out in the big wide world.

I think she would probably have been proud of us all and joined in with gusto if she had been here.

EarthWindFire · 17/09/2014 22:35

Best Wishes to all, hope you all keep your jobs and houses and sanity. Best of luck, genuinely

Same to you Deeedeee Smile

NCforAye · 17/09/2014 22:35

squoosh

Interesting (and surprising). What I was wondering is if there are any countries that go "halfway" - i.e. say that you can have dual citizenship from an approved list of other countries but not from another list.

starwarslegoboy · 17/09/2014 22:37

Talkin
See I don't think GB was shit. The fact that the crash was blamed on GB and AD and that the coalition all lied about is one of the reasons that tomorrow is now a reality. Labour colluded in that lie too.

OneNight · 17/09/2014 22:40

Sleep well deedeee.

WildThong · 17/09/2014 22:41

Two new poll results have just been released.
YouGov, for The Sun and The Times: Yes 48%, No 52%.
Survation, for the Daily Record: Yes 47%, No 53%.
The results are excluding don't knows, which were 6% in the YouGov poll, and 9% with Survation.

Roseformeplease · 17/09/2014 22:41

No, I would criticise anyone who belittled someone's feelings.

Have you read the other threads? We have all fought each other to a standstill. We are battled scarred (and scared) and we all have a grudging respect for our opponents, like deedee and others. And then, after all the water that has passed under all the bridges, you pop up and start being challenging.

SirChenjin · 17/09/2014 22:42

And on that note, I am hitting the hay. Goodnight all Smile
