!0,000 and counting.

OP posts:
Roonerspism · 15/09/2014 16:55

so do you fall into the gambler category, numanoid?

Genuine question as I'm trying to understand the yes voters. You clearly understand the warnings. You have clearly considered it. You clearly have the intelligence to comprehend them. You are obviously willing to go ahead regardless?

it's this bit that baffles me.

Sallyingforth · 15/09/2014 16:55

I am absolutely baffled that any sensible yes voter could now be ignoring the absolute tide of warnings from independent economists and businesses.

But the average Yes voter hasn't seen any of those. They have seen the high profile propaganda from SNP, the FB rubbish and the street parades. If they do any research on line it's probably something like Wings with its highly selective references.

They have accepted the Yes case because it promises a better life and they want to believe it.

There are some Yes voters on here who maintain that they have researched all the consequences and still for some inexplicable reason want what is being called "independence", but I am certain they are very much in the minority.

OneNight · 15/09/2014 16:58

I hear you Numanoid it's just that Scotland is a gey hot kitchen at the moment and some pan lids are rattling a bit. Working together and making use of the passions stirred in this debate are to my own mind going to be the biggest challenges facing the Scots from Friday afternoon.

MindReader · 15/09/2014 17:02

When will we 'know' does anyone know?

Will we know Friday morning?
Or will postal votes still need counting - someone told me today?
Aren't they counted first?

Will they go through the counties letting us know which area voted what?

Will there be a swing-o-meter?

Who is presenting it (please NOT Jackie Bird, anything but that?)

OneNight · 15/09/2014 17:04

You have something against sequins?

flippinada · 15/09/2014 17:13

Also from the BBC (I know, but it is verified elsewhere) one of the most high profile supporters (including donations) of the yes campaign is Sir George Mathewson.

If you don't know who he is, Google his name and specifically his relationship to Fred Goodwin. I'm sure he won't need any introduction.

lem73 · 15/09/2014 17:17

Regarding opinion polls my (staunch no) parents told me today that when the Yes canvasser came to the door, they said they were voting Yes to 1) shut the person up and prevent a return visit and 2) prevent a brick through their 'windae' (hopefully that was a joke). I don't really agree with that strategy but I'm sure they're not the only ones.
I studied political science in the States for a year. One of our professors participated in the infamous Kinsey study as a teenager. He said he and his friends greatly exaggerated their sexual activity to sound cool.
The point to his anecdote: don't trust opinion polls. People lie. This is why I worry about Thursdays result. No seems ahead, but who knows?

SirChenjin · 15/09/2014 17:20

Neighbour has just been down to our local shopping centre with her 2 boys aged 9 and 6. Conversation with the canvassers went like this (in front of her kids) -

Them: Hi, can we count on you to vote Yes on Thursday?
Her: Well, I'm a committed No voter, but if you think you can turn me then I'm open to hearing your arguments as to why I should vote Yes
Them: If you're a no voter you're a fucking idiot
Her: Shock What a succinct response - I'm not sure you've won me over with that, to be honest
Them: Fuck off

Now I know that there are idiots on both sides, but this type of response from the Yes lot seems to be becoming quite widespread. Who can she complain to - anyone know?

livingzuid · 15/09/2014 17:21

prettybird I have never said you were uneducated. I understand a Yes vote for political reform. Yet I still await a response on all my questions. How could people be prepared to plunge this wonderful country of ours into total chaos?

PhaedraIsMyName · 15/09/2014 17:26

all my friends at the Yes parties in Buchanan St and Kelvingrove Park, and there was nothing similar that I would have felt good about

But it's not a bloody party. One yes poster here described canvassing and all the excitement like a party she didn't want to end. Well it will end and it's going to be the worst hangover ever.

whitebits · 15/09/2014 17:28

Can someone explain something to me regarding the Bank of England and whole Lender of Last Resort thing (and I apologise in advance if I sound extremely dim but my brain has turned to mush reading the propaganda from both sides and being bombarded with shite on FB).

I understand that the Bank of England was nationalised in the 1940's and therefore (although it's name may suggest otherwise) is owned by England, Scotland, N.I and Wales. So it can be considered a Scottish asset.....

But if we opt for independence are we giving up this "asset" and therefore it bail us out in the event it all goes tits up ?

Again I apologise if this has been discussed/explained.

whitebits · 15/09/2014 17:29

it wouldn't bail us out

MindReader · 15/09/2014 17:32

onenight - sequins and Ms Bird have about the same 'depth' imo.

At least sequins don't gurn and barrack though....

combust22 · 15/09/2014 17:33

Things seem to be hotting up here- quite tense. Everywhere I have gone this weekend I have heard everyone talking about the referendum, in shops, cafes, in the street- nice change from people complaining about the weather!

chocoluvva · 15/09/2014 17:34

Phaedra - I went to the big no in Edinburgh yesterday; a model of good behaviour IMO. Standing on the platform in Glasgow on my way home again a group of yes voters were busy causing a breach of the peace. Polis were called.

Just back from leafleting in my area. The only yes voter I spoke to quoted Jim McColl (spelling?) as a big business expert in favour of independence. The fact he lives in Monaco didn't appear to phase him in the slightest!

Sorry, not much of a contribution to this thread. Looking forward to having a result very much now. (I'm sure we all are)

SirChenjin · 15/09/2014 17:34

Jackie Bird is a serious investigative journalist, dontcha know? The very best that Scottish television has to offer....

squoosh · 15/09/2014 17:34

Jackie's Referendum Night dress hanging up in her BBC dressing room.

The BoE isn't really an asset. The reserves within the BoE are assets and will be counted when it comes to the division of assets, but the BoE in itself is more of a service/function really.

As legal opinion is pretty united now on the UK being the continuing state they'd get the BoE.

whitebits · 15/09/2014 17:37

Thanks Statiscally - so in effect in the event of independence we're walking away from our Lender of Last Resort.

EarthWindFire · 15/09/2014 17:37

Loving the dress Shock

Hope it went well choca

whitebits · 15/09/2014 17:39

DH is handing out "Yes" badges like they're smarties....I'm thinking of making one of my own saying "Fuck off I've not made up my mind yet"

Just looking for badge big enough to fit all that on.

SirChenjin · 15/09/2014 17:41

I'm not sure if I'm looking forward to having a result - I suspect there will be trouble ahead, regardless of the outcome. Unless it's a massive majority one way or the other then there will be approximately half the country very unhappy with the outcome - and within that half the majority of younger voters (who will be paying for the decision in years to come) and older voters - who, according to the polls are voting No.

The idea that an SNP will simply be able to take away my nationality with a small majority does not sit well - I'm feeling very militant about it, and I'm sure there are plenty of others who feel the same. Equally, there will be plenty of Yes voters who won't sit back and accept a continued Union.

This has divided the country - and anyone who thinks it's simply a one great big party has been living in a bubble.

grovel · 15/09/2014 17:42

Good luck, whitebits.
