Please believe me when I say that there is no way rUK will enter into a Currency Union with iScotland.

Not only have all 3 party leaders emphatically ruled it out - but the public will not stand for it. Any party that changed it's stance on this issue would be committing political suicide.

If Scotland wants independence, fine, goodbye and good luck. But do not expect us (rUK) to underwrite it, even with the threat to renage on taking your share of the debt.

As for Sterligisation - no problem - no financial risk to us as we can protect it at a cost to iScotland.

As has been said before but merits repeating - Sterling is the currency of the UK. If Scotland votes to leave the UK it will not be "your" currency any more.
It will be as much "yours" as the Euro, USD, Yen or Peso.you know - Foreign currency.

DaughterDilemma · 15/09/2014 10:12

And in your second point you are inferring that you work in politics I think?

Thomyorke · 15/09/2014 10:13

Is there any concern in Scotland in the event of a yes vote about any deterioration in the relationship between iScotland and rUK. Bearing in mind the divide it has caused in Scotland. Salmond seems very good as a spin doctor but he cannot use these techniques once the independence decision has been made. We will probably be your biggest importers but I cannot believe that the next 18 months (which in itself seems a ridiculous short time) in the event of a yes the split of the nations will run smoothly or without bad feeling. At the moment this is Scotland decision but in less than a week I'd yes then currency, debt etc will be as much about us as about you (there will be no we).

LovleyRitaMeterMaid · 15/09/2014 10:18

Thom I see no reason why, moving on, that relations shouldn't remain civil, friendly even. We aren't anti English, that sentiment seems to be promoted by better together campaigning.

LovleyRitaMeterMaid · 15/09/2014 10:20

I don't hate anyone, I just want control over our own affairs.

OOAOML · 15/09/2014 10:20

Just checking in, although the rate this is going you may be on thread 12 by the end of the day.

Spiritedwolf · 15/09/2014 10:23

Fontella did you get my message (on an unrelated Welsh note not really to do with the thread) :)

My littlest brother is starting uni too, not so little any more. Maybe take the tack of showing him/supervising him doing the washing rather than doing it all for him. Though I understand that as he's off and growing up you might to do it one last time till he brings home a load of dirty washing one weekend

Hope he settles into uni okay x

The problem with both the currency union and sterlingisation, as Statistically has pointed out several times that we would likely have financial hardship because of the restraints - having to run a surplus (which we don't at the moment) or even build up reserves.

Spiritedwolf · 15/09/2014 10:26

Rita but we already have control over our own affairs as part of the UK and we won't have control over our own affairs if there is a currency union. rUK will and we will no longer have democratic representation at a UK level.

grovel · 15/09/2014 10:27

LovleyRitaMeterMaid, we can hope but our postman (in England) has just commented that it's a shame "they hate us so much".

Attacks on Westminster are being interpreted as attacks on England.

OP posts:
chocoluvva · 15/09/2014 10:30

Rita could you explain how having 'control over our own affairs' will benefit us? In concrete terms, not just that it will give us (somehow) a more equal society.

noddyholder · 15/09/2014 10:34

WM are crapping themselves that everyone else will demand the same powers of decentralised self govt so obvious.

WhatWouldFreddieDo · 15/09/2014 10:36

noddy yes, but it's too late to put that genie back - and actually about the only good thing to come out of this debate is the increased political engagement all over the UK

BardarbungaBardarbing · 15/09/2014 10:37

noddy they are crapping themselves that they may be faced with carving up the Union come Friday.

AnnieHoo · 15/09/2014 10:39

Just put that Carol Craig article up on fb and a YES friend shared it. It does reach people Smile. Good to see both sides still open minded.

LovleyRitaMeterMaid · 15/09/2014 10:42

How could a country running itself be a bad thing?

We do not have control, we have a parliament with limited powers which has done, in my opinion, a better job of responding to the needs of Scotland than Westminster ever has. It's time to take the next step.

Why are we so down on ourselves? Why do people in Scotland doubt that we can go it alone?

flippinada · 15/09/2014 10:43

I wholeheartedly agree that the high level of political engagement and debate this has engendered has been a good thing.

For anyone who is interested (and isn't already aware), here is a list of devolved and reserved matters:

Scottish Parliament

LovleyRitaMeterMaid · 15/09/2014 10:44

I'm sorry to hear your English postman haha confused himself with Westminster. Let's hope he uses his vote on Thursday.

LovleyRitaMeterMaid · 15/09/2014 10:45

*has

flippinada · 15/09/2014 10:46

I know this sounds a bit politics for dummies, but just for anyone isn't clear - devolved matters are those where the Scottish Parliament can make laws. Reserved matters are handled by the UK parliament.

OneNight · 15/09/2014 10:46

Just back from my physio exercises. This thread is a almost a relief.

prettybird

You said

I respect the views of the committed No voters (very eloquently expressed on here). What I don't understand is those people who say, "I'd like Scotland to be independent and maybe one day but not now......" If not now, when? confused

Let me give you my thoughts on that. If you were planning to run a marathon, would you just turn up having thought in advance 'Oh it'll be all right on the night'? Or would you instead do some training and preparation and go into the race with at least some hope of reaching the finishing line.

The posters on this thread are not some homogeneous block. There are many who believe passionately that separation is a lousy idea in and of itself. There are others and I am one of them who think that more separation might just be a good idea but not in this way, at this time and with a group of people who simply haven't done that training and preparation despite having had some considerable time to do so.

You asked, when? I tell you straight that I don't know although I do know that the divisions created by this referendum have created problems for separatist thought that will probably last for generations and will require a huge amount of work to overcome. I do know however that I don't want to go into anything without thinking it through because that way lies the best chance of succeeding.

The current Yes campaign have simply not thought it through. Their proposals don't stand up to any real scrutiny.

chocoluvva · 15/09/2014 10:46

Rita - approx. half the electorate of Scotland doesn't want to come out of the union so the onus is on those people who do want to leave to explain why they want to leave.

LovleyRitaMeterMaid · 15/09/2014 10:47

I agree, all these people switched on to politics, many for the first time, aren't going to switch off again.

We need to harness that energy and use it, whatever the results.

WhatWouldFreddieDo · 15/09/2014 10:47

Lovely Rita of course nothing is wrong in principle with a country running itself. However, when I and many No voters look at this particular closely intertwined relationship, with our shared history and geography and particularly the huge complications of international markets, we think that actually we are far better off with the benefits of being part of the UK, but with most powers devolvved.

So, keep a Union for defence and EU matters, but yes, please let's have as many other powers up here.

Fontella · 15/09/2014 10:47

Fontella did you get my message (on an unrelated Welsh note not really to do with the thread)

Wolf - I've replied to you! Bit rushed I'm afraid - I'll maybe write again later.

Wow - to the painting - you are hugely talented!! Very, very impressed.
