This photo from the BBC protest did make me giggle.

Indyref 10. The Marathon Continues..
IrnBruTheNoo · 14/09/2014 15:48

Cambio I covered that story about the International Press Conference hours after it happened and hardly anyone batted an eyelid on this thread. now a protest has come out of that one incident because people have just had enough. I saw the unedited version on Youtube and it is NOTHING like the BBC News channel portrayed it. Glad others noticed how biased it was.

CoreyTrevorLahey · 14/09/2014 15:51

That so many Yes voters see her language as bigoted exposes the emotional, nationalistic nature of the campaign. For heaven's sake some of the anti-English rhetoric borders on racist and now some are starting on the Welsh too

Apple, don't you see that's what I'm saying? People who say 'I'm voting yes because I want the English to fuck off' are every bit as bad as people who say 'the Scots are idiots who aren't capable of rational thought.'

Tbh, the eyes of the world are on us right now and the ire and national stereotyping we've come in for has disappointed me. And I'm a No voter!

I'd be happy to be corrected but I haven't seen much in the way of anti English stereotyping on these threads. But I have seen some stereotyping of the Scots which has shocked me.

OneNight · 14/09/2014 15:51

I don't know Cambio. I rarely listen to words at this stage in a campaign because the spin doctors of either side are at fever pitch. I'm more interested in what is required on the ground in terms of actual work.

On the matter of Caledonia, I can never rid my mind of that Billy Connolly skit where he talked about being in a hotel on Loch Lomond with a bunch of accountants (I think) all in Arran sweaters and singing 'I'll be a Wild Rover....'

I'll give Caledonia a by though because that's rather good.

Fontella · 14/09/2014 15:51

While I don't necessarily agree that fontella's posts are hoaching with it, I support chair's assertion that bigotry has been present on these threads and in the media.

She didn't make an 'assertion'. She came straight after my jugular - I'm biased, a bigot, I have no intention of supporting fair play, I am the reason we are here, and people like me are an embarrassment.

Let me refresh your memory at the response that was directed at me:

Your language (Scotland should go. The neighbours won't roll over... no matter how they scream and shout) shows your bias and bigotry. You want Scotland to play fair, but have no intention of supporting fair play yourself. You are the reason we are here, and people like you, shouting "FINE THEN GO!" are an embarrassment to those who are genuinely committed to keeping the union together.

And the justification for having that kind of abuse hurled at me for having the temerity to post from an outside perspective, is what exactly? Because 'bigotry has been present on these threads and in the media' and therefore its acceptable for another poster to hurl those accusations at me?

Acceptable in your world perhaps, but not mine.

cricketpitch · 14/09/2014 15:54

The National stereotyping is on both sides - and not acceptable in all cases

Applefallingfromthetree2 · 14/09/2014 15:58

Esmum-great post -thinking forward to the RUK elections in May changes the situation. Politicians south of the border need to consider carefully the promises they make now and the decisions they make after Thursday.

Attitudes south of the border are hardening and if they give away too much we will vote them out.

We must harden our attitudes to a shared currency, as things are developing RUK holds all the cards here and the loss of oil revenues are less of an issue. It is time for RUK to call AS's bluff.

It's also about time RUK looked at the positives of Scotland voting 'yes', there are some for sure. A smaller , more efficient union south of the border without all the current division and bitterness.

BakerStreetSaxRift · 14/09/2014 15:58

I feel exactly the same GrandTheft, I'm so upset. Two weeks ago I absolutely loved living her, felt so lucky. Now I just want out.

Cambiodenombre · 14/09/2014 15:58

Ok maybe I'm reading it wrong but the guardian journo seems to be saying that actually NR was right in what he said, AS did refuse to answer his question, or part of it.

ChelsyHandy · 14/09/2014 16:00

grandtheftmanual I just don't want to live here anymore. I no longer recognise my country. Looking at that TV station would suggest Scotland is oppressed, downtrodden. This is so far from the truth to be laughable. The BBC is the envy of most of the rest of the world. Having listened to the R4 news this lunchtime, it appeared to give far more voice to the Yes campaign (my opinion - I didn't have a timer set). but it would appear some people trust Russia Today to give a more impartial view.

Is Russia Today an actual publication, and are some Yes supporters actually promoting it as an alternative to home based news sources? Coming from the land of some of the worst human rights abuses in the name of left wing values in the twentieth century, with a mess of a country still in the grasp of a dictator, at war with its neighbours? Seriously? Has there been a coup in the Yes camp or something?

I agree, btw.

grandtheftmanual · 14/09/2014 16:03

Chelsy, one of the Yes supporters on here a couple of days ago suggested we should get our news from RT, as they were headlining with 'BBC bias', as though RT has no agenda. Oh no.

CoreyTrevorLahey · 14/09/2014 16:06

fontella, I have no beef with you. What another poster thinks of you is her business and yours, not mine. Emotions are running high and I apologise if you thought I was accusing you of anything.

cricket, I don't think for one minute that the Scots are innocent of anti English stereotyping but all I'm saying is that, on these threads, I have seen a lot more unpleasant stereotyping of the Scots. Generalizations about Tories, yep - seen plenty of those. But not 'Engla' in the same way that 'Scotland' has been talked about.

A purely personal observation, nothing more.

This is horrible. If the divisions on this thread are anything to go by the future looks bleak whatever the result of the referendum.

I read a phrase in the paper this morning that made me so sad. "If the vote is yes we will go our separate ways forever".

Scotland - be careful what you wish for….

dementedma · 14/09/2014 16:08

It is scary. A friend whom is a YES voter keeps speaking of the freedom from tyranny. Shit. Look around you. This is hardly a country in the grip of tyranny. Talk to my refugee friends who fled Mugabe in only the clothes they stood up in and then talk about tyranny!
Dh is already talking about us leaving Scotland if there is yes vote but my job is here as are my elderly parents. I am dreading Thursday.....

grandtheftmanual · 14/09/2014 16:11

These threads have mostly been made up of intelligent and informed debate by intelligent and informed women on both sides, if occasionally descending into a bit of a slanging match, but some comments both for and against on the independence station, Wings, and I'm sure on No sites make me want to weep. The ignorance and nastiness is palpable and I fear for the future of Scotland whichever way the vote goes.

Applefallingfromthetree2 · 14/09/2014 16:11

You are right Fontella-my mistake!

Just proves how easy it is to generalise after reading too many responses from 'yes' campaigners on these threads. Not at all fair on those that reach that conclusion rationally.

OneNight · 14/09/2014 16:13

Well if I were any of the politicians involved centre stage in this at this point I think I'd be holding my eyelids up with matches and unable to see straight from tiredness. I'm only amazed that no-one has been caught out in a major gaffe through sheer exhaustion.

Fontella · 14/09/2014 16:14

Apple - no problem. I understand how high emotions are running and I know there's lots of flak flying back and forth in all directions.

Just when unjustified, unfounded and untrue accusations are aimed at me, I will respond - Welsh dragon style!

cricketpitch · 14/09/2014 16:15

Corey you are right - not so much anti- English as anti-Scots on these threads. I just wanted to make the point that both are unhelpful - not trying tit-for-tat. BardarbungaBardarbing's post sort of says part of what I was trying to get across.

We are not all rich, middle-class, white, right-wing and living in the South East. (And my kids definitely feel 50/50 as DH is an Edinburgh man)

grandtheftmanual · 14/09/2014 16:15

Demented, I'm in the same situation regarding elderly parents.

EarthWindFire · 14/09/2014 16:16

Dh is already talking about us leaving Scotland if there is yes vote but my job is here as are my elderly parents. I am dreading Thursday.....

I am too. If it is a yes, as has been said we will have to move as DPs job will move.

I don't want to go. I love it where we are. I am in ill health and disabled. I don't want the upheaval. However most of all I don't want Scotland to end up divided. I really dread what the future will bring. Do people honestly think that come Friday, no matter what the result people will just shake hands and get on with it, because I don't think they will.

LovleyRitaMeterMaid · 14/09/2014 16:23

And with that we're back to collective cries of how awful it all is and yes campaigners have divided the country.

Like i said, no debate left.

I hate this too. It's not just you poor maligned no voters that are feeling got at.

StatisticallyChallenged · 14/09/2014 16:29

I'm shocked at what I'm seeing from outside the BBC to be honest. The YES campaigners are not some poor oppressed minority. Not everyone is out to get you. It's not some giant conspiracy.

Oh, and look, here's the BBC reporting on it
