Re Murdoch. Maybe yesterday's events with the terrorist beheading curtailed the Sun. Even they wouldn't have sunk so low as to not have that on their front page.

I've watched some of it too, saw it a couple of hours ago. Not going to watch it all afternoon though Grin as there are only so many bad renditions of Flower of Scotland I need to hear to get the drift!

Applefallingfromthetree2 · 14/09/2014 15:29

Actually I don't think that fontella is using emotive language. She is telling it how it is. That so many Yes voters see her language as bigoted exposes the emotional, nationalistic nature of the campaign. For heaven's sake some of the anti-English rhetoric borders on racist and now some are starting on the Welsh too.

Perhaps it really is time for Scotland to go it's own way, and I never thought I'd say that.

Fontella · 14/09/2014 15:31

Thankyou Esmum07 for your thoughtful contribution to the thread, which echoes much of what I was trying to say earlier.

There does seem to be this perception in the minds of some Scottish separatist politicians and their supporters, that the lives and futures of the 60 million citizens of the rest of the UK are somehow irrelevant in all this, and what Scotland demands, Scotland will get ... otherwise it will simply default, with no consequences.

I'm afraid that is not going to be the case .. and in the weeks and months to follow that will become increasingly clear. This is far, far bigger than 5.2 million Scottish residents (some 50% of whom want to stay in the Union if opinion polls are to be believed) and what they want, demand or feel they deserve.

But saying so invites accusations of bias and bigotry towards us outside 'observers' (for want of a better word) as I have already discovered. Smile

squoosh Murdoch just want to be on the winning side, so he aligns himself with the side with power. He's just misread the signals earlier by supporting YEs and must now move to No and pin it on some reason. Meh.

OneNight · 14/09/2014 15:31

Near the top of page 15. I'd forgotten how fast this moves.

squoosh · 14/09/2014 15:31

The music is a bit pants.

StatisticallyChallenged · 14/09/2014 15:31

BBC Scotland news have also tweeted about the protest

ChelsyHandy · 14/09/2014 15:33

Have you tuned in yet to the Independence Channel yet Chelsy?

Yes. Hence my comment above. I can't watch that for long. Its a bit overwrought, isn't it? All that oppressed people stuff, when countries like North Korea and Syria exist.

Scotland's always been such a peaceful country. What on earth has happened to it? Its so sad. I hope that things will settle down again once the Referendum is over, because I can imagine this is going to drive a lot of people out if it doesn't.

IrnBruTheNoo · 14/09/2014 15:33

BBC seem to be a bit slow picking up on the protest going on outside their building. They musn't work on Sundays....?

Fontella · 14/09/2014 15:33

'So many?'

I thought it was only one who had accused me of being a biased bigot. Have I missed some others?

Grin
IrnBruTheNoo · 14/09/2014 15:34

Ah cross posted iwth you SC - glad they've noticed it now! It obviously wasn't for nothing!

prettybird · 14/09/2014 15:35

I actually don't want Murdoch to come down in favour. Hmm

Don't think I could bear the headlines "It was the Sub wot won it" Hmm assuming Yes wins WinkGrin

IrnBruTheNoo · 14/09/2014 15:36

Oh dear - BBC GAA GAA

prettybird · 14/09/2014 15:36

Autocorrect failure Blush "...the Sun wot won it" Hmm

StatisticallyChallenged · 14/09/2014 15:36

I think those with sense on both sides would rather he just STFU frankly!

IrnBruTheNoo · 14/09/2014 15:37

Lots of wannabes taking advantage of this opportunity to get their music OUT there. Flower of Scotland singer just now pretty good.

IrnBruTheNoo · 14/09/2014 15:37

I've no opinion whatsoever on Murdoch....moving on!

WildThong · 14/09/2014 15:38

Nice singer, mince song.

Its not going to settle down after the Referendum, is it? We will still have protests that, in the event of a No vote, it was because the media was biased.

You only have to look on here to see that there is a tried and tested response to anyone who doesn't vote Yes - propaganda (the Wee Blue Book, Bella Caledonia) is forced upon you. Presumably a resolutely No supporting state broadcaster will be next?

squoosh · 14/09/2014 15:40

Oh not 'Caledonia'.....

IrnBruTheNoo · 14/09/2014 15:41

Fab! Dougie Maclean's Caledonia!!

WildThong · 14/09/2014 15:43

I thought AS choice of words this morning on Andrew Marr was interesting, he said "a once in a generation opportunity"
Think it was deliberate?

This comment on BBC bias comes from andrew sparrow on guardian blog, a similar comment was made after the NR incident at the press conference;

^Yes campaigners really don’t like the BBC’s Nick Robinson.

In fact, they are not keen on the BBC generally. There is a large protest in Glasgow now outside the BBC about the corporation’s alleged bias.

There seems to be a live stream of it here.

And this Wings Over Scotland article explains why many yes supporters think Robinson lied about Alex Salmond last week.

Robinson said Salmond had refused to answer a question that he asked at the press conference. I was there, and I thought it was fair enough because Salmond refused to address the specific thrust of Robinson’s question about why voters should trust him, a politician, rather than business leaders. Robinson obviously had the Robin Day question that prompted John Nott walkout (“here today, and, if I may say so, a gone tomorrow politician” etc) in mind. Salmond did not address that trust point. But I’ve heard far worse examples of politcians dodging or evading questions, and Salmond addressed the point about business concerns in general terms reasonably fully.^

grandtheftmanual · 14/09/2014 15:45

I just don't want to live here anymore. I no longer recognise my country. Looking at that TV station would suggest Scotland is oppressed, downtrodden. This is so far from the truth to be laughable. The BBC is the envy of most of the rest of the world. Having listened to the R4 news this lunchtime, it appeared to give far more voice to the Yes campaign (my opinion - I didn't have a timer set). but it would appear some people trust Russia Today to give a more impartial view.

Please wake up. Look at what is happening to us.
