ItsAllGoingToBeFine, but who will be Prime Minister? Pretty unsatisfactory changing halfway through. My suggestion was that maybe Cameron, Clegg, Miliband et al agree on a team and step back themselves. It would make the end result a joint enterprise and could prevent years of feuding in rUK.

The problem with that lovleyRita is that the level of uncertainty we have about the future in the UK is probably a bit higher than normal, but not massively so. There is uncertainty about future politics inherent in life and most of us accept that.

But we're being asked to take an active decision to leap in to a different system, with different issues and different uncertainties.

Whilst I don't believe a no vote is a vote for the status quo, it's certainly much closer to it than a yes vote is.

We're right to be looking for answers.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 10/09/2014 12:51

Standard Life will pull out of Scotland if it's a Yes vote. Business follows money. They need to look after their shareholders

Precisely - it doesn't matter what exactly they've said or not said; this is the way business works. Empathy with anyone's cause simply doesn't come into it, however much some may wish it did - they go where they'll be assured of stability and the best business climate for them

It's alo a good example of the possible consequences of reneging on debt - but that's fine; if Scotland feels they can get away with that, by all means let them try

ItsAllGoing you're right, they've had years, but they simply didn't believe it was a possibility

They got it wrong, obviously Smile I am with you on the blinkered WM bubble. But now, finally, at the last possible moment, they Get It.

If there's a No vote and nothing changes re. devolved powers, I will eat my hat and after that I will join you in marching for Devo Plus, Max, whatever

starwarslegoboy · 10/09/2014 12:57

The problem is that uncertainly, serious uncertainly will happen regardless. The question is whether we want to accept austerity where we might have some input into the eventual outcome or have austerity (could be less, could be more, who knows) where we will have few powers, and possibly fewer after they kick our arse, than we have now.

It's just a decision as to how much control you want to have over that austerity. Just a case of 'pick one', but there is no utopia in either

Roonerspism · 10/09/2014 12:58

It'sallgoingtobefine You are wrong. Standard Life has strengthened its statement. It's on the front page of the Telegraph's site. Please read before posting inaccurate statements.

Its shareprice has just gone up. Investors are delighted. Get the hell out of Scotland please and we'll stick with you.

Which company will be next to announce?

You might not care about these things but there are billions of pounds that will be pulled out.

StatisticallyChallenged · 10/09/2014 12:58

Frankly, I'd be on that March with you whatwouldfreddiedo.

Weemacgreegor · 10/09/2014 12:59

Apologies if this has already been posted. I can only see the first one so maybe someone can confirm this is indeed the front page of the Daily Mail today.

puzzled - Standard life have said that they may consider pulling some of their functions out of Edinburgh.

Not all of their functions. Not a certainty. Just a 'maybe'.

Nice headline though! Like most of the better together headlines, very little in the way of substance.

TheCraicDealer · 10/09/2014 13:07

Telegraph piece on the impact on the banking sector.

OhBuggerandArse · 10/09/2014 13:09

Cameron turning up to hang around in private in big financial offices shows how totally out of touch he is with the mood of this campaign and the nature of the arguments. Time he got out and talked to a broader spectrum of the population.

starwarslegoboy · 10/09/2014 13:11

Why at any cost? Why would it ruin us but other small countries can achieve? Is there something intrinsically stupid about us that we can't manage it?

As I said, I would have voted for DevoMax but we weren't 'allowed' that. Now if we vote no, we will have our ginger arses unceremoniously kicked up and down The Royal Mile. And the rest of the world will forever see us as the only mealy race of people who actually turned down the opportunity to govern ourselves. And look at the movements for democracy and freedom in the world...The Arab Springs? Palestine? - But we, we will be the laughing stock of the world

I didn't choose this situation, I wold have settled. as would have most of the Yes voters.. But I am utterly mortified at the thought of the humiliation that a No vote, worldwide.

Can you imagine the parodies on the 'Freedom' cry of Braveheart on the 19th. I think I will be having Staycations forvermore.

WildThong · 10/09/2014 13:11

Actually I quite liked his speech.

ffallada · 10/09/2014 13:12

OhBugger

Its a pity Cameron didn't think that coming back from one of his many holidays early to take part in any of the debates was important.

He is supposed to be our prime minister. He should have been here two years ago. And he definitely should be taking to other people than the staff of Scottish Widows.

StatisticallyChallenged · 10/09/2014 13:13

Ffala, my interpretation is that is as strong as standard will go as they need to leave a little wiggle room so that if it's a no they can say to Scottish customers that it was just contingency planning, just because of uncertainty... Kind of leaves enough room for soothing noises.

My translation of it is "so long, farewell..."

Raintown · 10/09/2014 13:14

starwarslegoboy 'Devo Max' will be honoured because WM is no longer in any doubt about the need / desire for change and the consequences of not delivering it.

The fact that this desire extends to the English regions as well means it will happen and Britain will be better & stronger for it - one of the positive outcomes of this debate.

BardarbungaBardarbing · 10/09/2014 13:14

Don't bring the Arab Spring into this please..

Roonerspism · 10/09/2014 13:14

ffallada seriously? Waken up and smell the roses. It will do whatever it needs to protect its shareholders and investors. It will certainly not want, in the long term, to have its operations across two jurisdictions. it would be completely unmanageable depending on currency, EU, Bank of England etc. It might leave us a call centre or two as a farewell shot. This will take a few years to implement so of course it won't be from the 19 September.

And it's not just Standard Life. It's the entire financial sector including the banks.

I wish I lived in your world right now, honestly I do. That this doesn't shake you leaves me baffled.

chocoluvva · 10/09/2014 13:14

weatherall we are voting for democracy

No irony in voting for democracy

You care deeply about eradicating poverty and making a more equal society. But only for Scotland. Of course Scottish votes, Scottish mps and the participation of Scottish people together with the people of rUK in national campaigns and movements influence WM. If Scotland pulls out of the UK you/we will have no influence on WM.

StatisticallyChallenged · 10/09/2014 13:15

We will not be the laughing stock of the world. Calm the rhetoric down a notch please! What a ridiculously inflammatory post.
