Well?

OP posts:
SantanaLopez · 05/09/2014 19:35

I'm sure an iScotland could put together some sort of defence force, although I get the impression it wouldn't be a priority.

It would have to be; EU entry requirements now state that countries joining must have a sizeable army which is part of the common (EU) defence policy and which can be called upon for various reasons, including peacekeeping and potentially war.

ffallada · 05/09/2014 19:37

stationary the housing market has slowed all over the UK, to blame it on the referendum is just not right. I am involved in the property market down in Birmingham ATM and its the same thing there.
Sorry. Its more likely to be the tightening up of mortgage lending rules.
I believe its still ok in London........

WhatWouldFreddieDo · 05/09/2014 19:38

Annie, sorry, my post sounded flippant and I was referring to any new recruits wanting an army career.

I'm a No voter, and think an iScotland would be hard pushed to create something decent in the 18 months before independence, so yes, it's very very scary.

But Nato will be there for us apparently - luckily a few other countries are happy to keep nuclear weapons to protect us.

AnnieGetYourTazer14 · 05/09/2014 19:40

WhatWould that's actually quite funny because what is a flippant remark is actually the basis of the proposed defence staffing!

SantanaLopez · 05/09/2014 19:42

But Nato will be there for us apparently - luckily a few other countries are happy to keep nuclear weapons to protect us.

Have you read the white paper? We're actually fine keeping other countries' weapons in Faslane too. We won't even be allowed to inspect them.

feelingmellow · 05/09/2014 19:42

dee dee - re your statement I for one haven't insulted anyone.

You have insulted me when you said
Stop trying to prove your stereotype. Not every professional home owning person feels the same way as you.

You don't know me or my circumstances so please don't jump to conclusions.

IrnBruTheNoo · 05/09/2014 19:43

"£80K is not super rich. It is a really good salary and I'm sure seems like being a millionaire if you are earning a low salary. "

Most families are lucky to earn a fraction of that annually, so yes in relative terms, it is like being a millionaire to some.

You can easily live a very modest lifestyle on £80k, and have plenty to save each month with a salary of that size.

AnnieGetYourTazer14 · 05/09/2014 19:44

IrnBru, Fanny, OldLady, Deeedee any comments about the Defence proposals?

deeedeee · 05/09/2014 19:45

80 k is rich! Come on! Ofcourse it is!

I'm actually quite shocked that some of you don't realise that! A 265 k flat in edinburgh is very fortunate x

IrnBruTheNoo · 05/09/2014 19:50

"Sorry. Its more likely to be the tightening up of mortgage lending rules. "

^ this. We recently remortgaged and we had to jump through hoops, the paperwork took ages to go through, and it was a nightmare. It can put a lot of people off buying if they are first timers. I'm not surprised!! The criteria is stricter than when we first took out a mortgage.

IrnBruTheNoo · 05/09/2014 19:51

LOL @ £265k for a flat in Edinburgh! I don't know any family who can afford this. Am wondering what planet some folk are on on this thread.

StatisticallyChallenged · 05/09/2014 19:54

I'd agree 80k is a very good salary and pretty well off - but I wouldn't particularly call it rich.

Edinburgh house prices are bonkers! I appreciate that a 240k flat isn't shithole territory, but on the flipside you're talking about 80k being very rich. Surely very rich salary (as you argue) should buy more than a 2 bedroom flat in a decent area? I'm not saying it's poverty, just that house prices are crazy!

I'm intrigued to know what my back story is Grin

IrnBruTheNoo · 05/09/2014 19:54

Annie I can't honestly make a comment on the Defence side of things, as I don't know enough about it. It's impossible to be sharp on every single topic that is covered in the white paper.

AnnieGetYourTazer14 · 05/09/2014 19:54

I'm on the planet that has organised crime rubbing their hands... any thoughts IrnBru?

Sallyingforth · 05/09/2014 19:55

IrnBru are you on a permanently fixed rate?

TheBogQueen · 05/09/2014 19:56

I think I have a new girl crush

Sallyingforth · 05/09/2014 19:58

Scotland will become an excellent terrorist base, once MI5 and MI6 have moved out.

IrnBruTheNoo · 05/09/2014 20:00

Sally it's fixed for two years I think. Dreading going through it all again though! Best to get a good deal rather than sticking with status quo.

DoctorTwo · 05/09/2014 20:01

*DoctorTwo", the FTSE is almost at a 14 year high.

You're right. But trading is slow. The reasons for the FTSE being so high are:-

Almost free money from the BofE through QE.
Corporations are sitting on mountains of cash instead of investing due to poor confidence and a slowdown in customer spending.
Corporations are buying back their shares, effectively taking them back into private hands.
Low interest rates meaning they face virtually no risk.

When Mark Carnage raises interest rates things are going to go haywire.

AnnieGetYourTazer14 · 05/09/2014 20:02

I can't honestly make a comment on the Defence side of things, as I don't know enough about it. It's impossible to be sharp on every single topic that is covered in the white paper.
Granted, and my point exactly. But what is stopping you listening to the experts that do? I'm truly concerned that Yes voters such as yourself are being deceived by policies that are impossible to implement.

TheBogQueen · 05/09/2014 20:04

You know we have a police force which, you know, has an interest in counter terrorism and combating organised crime.

Sallyingforth · 05/09/2014 20:04

IrnBru So you're safe for those two years, good for you. That's a sensible move in the present very uncertain climate.
When those two years are up, what then I wonder?

Sallyingforth · 05/09/2014 20:05

BogQueen
Can your police force start doing those highly technical and specialised functions as well?

AnnieGetYourTazer14 · 05/09/2014 20:06

TheBogQueen
You know we have a police force which, you know, has an interest in counter terrorism and combating organised crime.
I'm so sorry but this is not the organisation that keeps terrorists and organised crime at bay.

OOAOML · 05/09/2014 20:08

I'm just making a flying visit, but if people have images and back stories - how about ain't referendum meet-up where we have to guess who everyone is? Wink.

Sorry for derailing, please all go back to discussing the issues. I am shattered and need to be up early tomorrow so am planning to take a few hours off and drink wine in peace Smile
