Jesus, we can talk!

PacificDogwood · 01/09/2014 21:15

Hope you don't mind that I carry on lurking.

I find the debate and photos of men in kilts here much more edifying that what's going on in RL.

StatisticallyChallenged · 01/09/2014 21:17

Stop lurking and start debating ya big wimp! Grin

SantanaLopez · 01/09/2014 21:18

SNP will NOT get a currency union. That just is not an option for any Westminster party to concede, even if they did a 180 degree turn. Their own voters will not permit it.

Oh, I agree with you, I was just trying to point out that even in the best case scenario I don't believe that an independent Scotland can do anything/ much to alleviate child poverty.

What are your key issues, if any, Pacific? Feel strongly about anything? Obviously everyone knows what mine are.

stoppedlurking56 · 01/09/2014 21:28

I dont even like the kilt. Or many supposedly typical Scottish things! I do like lots of supposedly English things though....afternoon tea, Enid Blyton, PIMMS, calling people "chaps", rowing, being super polite. Not sure what that's got to do with anything - just musing!

SantanaLopez · 01/09/2014 21:40

Savings- MPs/HOL, Trident. HS2, crossrail, illegal wars, millionaire tax breaks, subsidising pensions and housing benefit. That all adds up to BILLIONS and that just off the top of my head.

Scotland will be cheaper to run not more expensive.

Not in the short term. Trident, for one, isn't going anywhere. We receive more in spending than we pay in tax already, and that's without the huge costs of setting up our own infrastructure. So the question remains- what happens to the children in poverty while you sort everything out?

just for pacific

StatisticallyChallenged · 01/09/2014 21:43

Swinney has previously said that any money saved on Trident will be spent on the armed forces. MSPs get a salary which is on the same percentile for Edinburgh as MPs in London.

Subsidising pensions - what are you referring to specifically?
Housing benefit - are we not going to have that?

PacificDogwood · 01/09/2014 21:49

I've just watched that Robin McAlpine rant speech in Troon; v impressive and I cannot say that I disagree with a lot of what he said.

It's the economy that frightens me because a. I don't understand anything about financial markets, neither within Britain, nor the UK, never mind globally and b. I don't believe anything either side are saying.

I am in the fortunate position personally to work in a crisis proof job, my skills and qualifications in case of a disastrous downturn of fortunes in iScotland I could with relative ease leave the country and relocate elsewhere, so the 'draw' I feel to vote Yes is NOT based on any short-term personal gain or 'being £1400 better off per year' (stupid thing to say and stupid thing to take as any kind of enforceable 'promise'), but more as very much a long game as I said before.

I accept that there would v likely be a period of year or many years of upheaval and uncertainty which may be tolerable due to being self-govourned and self-deterined.

I don't know.
Then I lie awake at night and think it would be a disaster a 'better the devil we know'. Sigh.

I am scared to click on any of the links posted by member of the Coven btw Grin

SantanaLopez · 01/09/2014 21:50

Scotland doesn't have any control of our interest rate now!

Yes, and we're taken into account by the BoE when they are setting the UK's rate. So the interest rate helps and suits the whole economy, of which we are an important part.

Child poverty is caused by Westminster policies which favour those born into money over those born into working class homes. It is a class war by people, including some on this thread, who label the poor and think babies deserve to be poor... No Westminster party cares about child poverty in Scotland.

Oh come on! What a load of hot air and hyperbole!

Without the full tax powers of independence no Scottish government can fix it either.

Tax powers don't matter one jot when you don't control spending (see CU) or the interest rates.

Whoops only a couple of weeks left, going to try and fit in a meeting. I've decided, but would like to attend something in the run up.

OneNight · 01/09/2014 21:54

Leaving those remarks of his aside for discussion, Swinney is actually a pretty decent and thoughtful guy. I doubt he'll last, whatever the vote.

StatisticallyChallenged · 01/09/2014 21:58

It's a nice men in kilts link from me, I promise!
