Do you shower every day?

The thread about taking an hour made me wonder.

In the morning I:

Clean teeth and listerine (10 mins)

Shower including hair wash with conditioner and shave legs and armpits every other day (10 mins)

Dry and straighten hair (10 mins)

Makeup, dress, earrings and other accessories (10 mins)

I can cut this down but I dawdle and make cups of tea, watch tv in between so yeah about an hour. But some people seem to just wash?

So what is the average?

Ha! Good to know. No crusty bits then Smile

Philoslothy · 26/08/2014 23:49

i pong if i don't shower every day.

lacktoastandtolerance · 26/08/2014 23:50

Shower a couple of times a week on average, wash my hair on one of those two occasions, normally. No real routine though.

RunDougalRunQuiteFast · 26/08/2014 23:53

I can't get dressed without a shower and hair wash - 17 mins is my Personal Best for shower, dress, hair dry and bit of makeup.

MidniteScribbler · 26/08/2014 23:59

I have to shower every morning or I feel really yuck. If I'm having a day at home and going to be gardening I don't bother having it until after I finish, but if I'm leaving the house, then it's straight in to the shower. My hair needs to be washed every day or it looks gross. But I can manage to get from bed to out the door in about 30 minutes if I absolutely must, but I generally get up about two hours before leaving for work as I like my quiet time and relaxed getting ready rather than a big rush.

wiltingfast · 27/08/2014 00:00

I actually hate showering, wet and cold, ick. Actually it's the bit after showering that hate. Cold, drippy on the mat, trying to get dry before the kids burst in, brrrrr. Horrible. Then I still have to do my bloody hair, it's such a pain. Sticky skin getting dressed. Awful.

Am always amazed so many people enjoy it!

DontstepontheMomeRaths · 27/08/2014 00:05

Lacktoast do you wash under arms with a flannel inbetween and reapply fresh deodorant? Twice a week seems so little. I just had to ask sorry.

DontstepontheMomeRaths · 27/08/2014 00:07

Wilting I'm always hot when I get out of the shower, and towel dry fast. So I don't get cold. Do you live in a drafty (sp?) house? Or with a lack of bathroom ventilation? Both of those would impact on how I felt getting out of the shower.

wiltingfast · 27/08/2014 00:14

We've done our best with the bathroom, it's iinsulated etc. I think it's wet skin tbh. I dry as fast as I can tho...

Dontgotosleep · 27/08/2014 00:18

I bathe twice a day. Need to wash my hair every other day. Straighten it everyday. Put make up on. Paint my nails the night before. Not too sure really how long it takes me. I am one of those people who wont go out till I believe I look perfect.

lacktoastandtolerance · 27/08/2014 00:23

DontstepontheMomeRaths I wash as necessary, yes. Work from home so I do realise it's different to being in, say, an office. Perhaps should have mentioned that ... it also varies depending on how often I'm doing anything interesting. So might have a shower two days on the trot then just wash to stay vaguely clean for a few days. Or not Grin

I think as a society - showering, bathing, washing clothes - we are as a whole a bit over the top. Most people don't need to wash all of their clothes every day, most people don't need to shower twice a day or even every day.

That said, I live in the sticks and work from home - so no sitting in cars, fumes, air conditioned offices etc. - a very 'natural' lifestyle if you like. When I travel to London I do feel ... grimier ... (don't take that the wrong way if you live there) and shower every day.

Urgh, I sound like some slovenly bumpkin. I'm not. Mostly.

DontstepontheMomeRaths · 27/08/2014 00:32

Ahhhh ok lacktoast Grin I'm a nosey thing!

DontstepontheMomeRaths ha, no problem. I think a lot has to do with situation. Stress sweats smell worse than labour sweats. I'd rather sit next to a farmer who's been shifting bales and sheep all day than an office worker who's been worrying about promotion all day.

Although now farmers spend so much time in what are little more than office chairs in air-conditioned tractors I'm not so sure if the gap isn't shortening....

I shower twice a day, in the morning takes me just under an hour to get ready from morning toilet call to dressed and ready to leave. Shower in the morning is roughly 20 minutes consisting of waiting for water to get to right temperature whilst swishing my listerine after brushing teeth. Shampoo, conditioner, soap (shave if necessary), cleanser for face then a quick blitz of cold water before getting out (hate feeling hot coming out of a shower).

Shower at night is only 5-10 mins just basically get wet clean necessary areas like armpits and fanjo rest of the body doesn't really matter if it doesn't get any soap. Hair obv gets wet - no shampoo or conditioner oh and forgot also brush my teeth and swish my listerine.

Whats worst is I get on a train and its packed people pushing and pushing and your crammed in and it makes me want a shower all over again get so hot and sweaty! And when I get the tube yuk you only have to blow your nose to see the black dust that you breathe in so it must get trapped on your skin too - hot summer days are the yuckiest on the tube. How anyone can say they don't need to shower after one of those days is odd Hmm

I shower every day. My workday routine is: get up, have drink of water, go to loo, shower including wash hair, wash face (water only), shave pits. Legs get shaved more sporadically. Dry off, put hair in towel twist, clean teeth, moisturise (highest SPF I can find), put parting in hair and comb fringe, leave hair to air dry. Faff around for ages deciding what to put on depending on weather forecast, get dressed, put on watch & rings, have breakfast, brush hair, out the door. If my DH feels ill I get up earlier, fling some clothes on and walk the dog before going in the shower. Whole thing takes about an hour (minus dog walk) but that's because I am a daydreaming faffer by nature; when I need to I can comfortably get it down to 40 minutes, less if I plan my outfit the night before.

Occasionally on weekends or holidays at home, if I don't have any plans to go anywhere apart from taking the dog for a walk I'll just have a quick wash rather than a shower, but my hair will be lank and greasy by mid-morning. I live in a city and use public transport for work; I'd feel too grimy not to shower every workday and my hair is awful if it hasn't been washed every morning.

ulbeing · 27/08/2014 01:27

am I the only one who makes use of the shower head to occasionally .... ahem .... pleasure myself? (not every day of course)

DancingDinosaur · 27/08/2014 01:36

Shower every morning. 5 mins. But I don't do makeup and I'm lucky that my hair looks ok without drying. No shower ever day = stinky imo.

KoalaDownUnder · 27/08/2014 03:57

I shower twice a day, every day.

I couldn't stand to go to work in the morning without showering. And I don't like getting into a clean bed with grime from the day on me.

Dizzywizz · 27/08/2014 04:17

I hate rushing in the morning, plus I have multiple sclerosis and walking/moving is harder first thing so need lots of sit downs! Wake just after 6 and we leave just before 8 - don't shower in the morning (don't shower at all as can't stand in there), I bath every other day.

Get up, get ds up and dressed, brekki, contact lenses/moisturiser/dressed/make up while ds eats and watches tv, get dh up and he lets dog out.

Bit more rest time then get lunches etc ready, teeth then off we go. I am an early bird so happy waking up early and taking my time Smile

Missunreasonable · 27/08/2014 07:17

I'm not convinced by the argument that washing often is bad for the skin. If you choose products without sulfates and harsh ingredients you will not dry out the skin.
One of my DC has eczema, 10 years ago his eczema was so bad he would be hospitalised a couple of times a year due to the skin becoming very badly infected. The advice on washing was to keep it to a maximum of twice of week (and wash with emollients) because washing dries out the skin. We kept washing DC to twice a week but his eczema didn't get any better. Then we moved house and got a new dermatologist who said we needed to bathe DC every day to keep the skin clean and minimise bacteria. Less bacteria = lower risk of infection. We now bathe DC every day (using emollients) and his symptoms are much better. He hasn't had an infection in three years and even then it was only a mild localised infection.

OneLittleToddleTerror · 27/08/2014 07:27

I shower at least once everyday (twice if going to gym). Seems like it's pretty normal. I don't see us complaining about skin infections and dermotology appointments. Neither does my DH or my family. I think I would say sugarskully's husband is the one that's not normal.

It's the same as saying you should eat peanuts because x or y gets really sick with peanuts.

deepbluetr · 27/08/2014 07:28

lilmis- I am the same as you- I shower everyday, but a very quick wash, soaping up only necessary areas, armpits, fanjo, under the breasts. THe rest of my body is rinsed only with plain water.

MummyPig24 · 27/08/2014 07:31

I shower every day, clean my teeth twice a day, shave legs and pits when I remember, wash hair 2-3 times a week. It takes a long time to dry and straighten so I usually let it dry naturally and wear it curly for a day then straighten when I have time.

DontstepontheMomeRaths · 27/08/2014 07:57

Ulbeing I nearly spat my tea out! As a teen I did discover the wonder of a power shower head! But it's been a long time now Grin

This morning is proof of why I need to get ready quick, I'm sitting here reading mn instead of packing lunches etc. Priorities Wink
