to want to know why British Jihadi fighters will have their passports revoked?

Upon hearing that there are 500+ English muslims fighting in Syria and Iraq as part of the Isis army I immediately looked online for what would happen to them if they tried to return to the UK. I've listened to the news for days and read the papers, government websites etc. and it seems that they will simply be allowed back in. I find this extremely frightening. Why isn't there a clear line on what will happen to them if they try to return? Why isn't the government being clear that they will have passports cancelled and be exiled?

I agree with those who say they should not be allowed back but realise there are practicalities which might make it impossible. We'll probably end up paying out vast amounts for them to challenge the ruling and get Brussels to overrule it. I find it galling that these people will accept the tolerance of our society when it suits them

ArsenicyOldFace · 22/08/2014 13:20

Well quite. Australia would be pretty miffed if we tried doing that again.

googoodolly · 22/08/2014 13:21

You can't just dump them somewhere else Hmm

Stripping someone of their passport is one thing, but you can't just revoke their nationality at the drop of the that. They're English. We can't just dump them on someone else!

partyskirt · 22/08/2014 13:22

But they're not considering themselves English are they necessarily -- they're primarily considering themselves part of a religious extremist group based in the middle east.

'These people', are they not our people? Is this not still their society too?

ArsenicyOldFace · 22/08/2014 13:25

They're English.

British, in fact.

TheFairyCaravan · 22/08/2014 13:25

They don't see themselves as British do they?

It frightens me immensely that they will be able to fly back here, get off a plane and go about their business. I have zero confidence that anyone in this country will know where they are or what they are doing.

AuntieStella · 22/08/2014 13:26

It's all governed by a UN Convention on the Reduction of Statelessness (and I think, but am hoping an expert will pop up, that the EU version is simply a reiteration of that).

It is permissible to strip nationality if a) the grounds on which it was recognised are demonstrated to be fraudulent and b) if there has been major disloyalty to the nation (back to definitions of treason, I suppose).

Not now, not since they denounced everything it stands for and buggered off to fight for 'their' cause elsewhere. They should never ever be allowed back in, renounce their passports and their nationality....they love it where they are so much they are prepared to die for it, well let's hope their wishes come true.

ArsenicyOldFace · 22/08/2014 13:29

Yes Username12345 that slight reluctance to clasp violent terrorists to her bosom and claim them as close personal friends was clearly flagrant racism. Well called Hmm

I agree, actually. I was just doing the point of order re English/British before someone angrier (and less English) came and did so.

TooMuchRain · 22/08/2014 13:31

OP - which country do you want to 'give' them to? Iraq?

TheFairyCaravan · 22/08/2014 13:33

No, our society is not their society.

If they wanted to be part of our society then they would still be here, living in a civilised manner, not beheading innocent men!

ArsenicyOldFace · 22/08/2014 13:34

People who have lived in foreign lands for months and fought in foreign 'armies' are pushing it to describe themselves as 'having nowhere to go'.

Risking your life in combat is a fairly strong declaration of allegiance, after all.

LadyLuck10 · 22/08/2014 13:34

Username you are deluded. They should be imprisoned or sent back to the country that they love so much. I doubt anybody wants them back.

Numfardothedanceofshame · 22/08/2014 13:35

More than likely they'll be arrested on entering the country.

ArsenicyOldFace

Yes because if you're not separating people into us and them then you must be clasping violent terrorists to your bosom and claiming them as close personal friends.

No middle ground of course.

partyskirt · 22/08/2014 13:35

Whichever they share dual nationality with (if the other nationality came first)?

I agree it's not clear for single-nationality British citizens. I guess prison?

I don't have the answers / know what I think exactly. I was genuinely looking for information. I'm very frightened and sickened by the news and what they're doing.

OP posts:
partyskirt · 22/08/2014 13:37

But username can you afford middle ground? You must feel very pragmatic / removed, because I seriously worry about violence back here.

OP posts:
TheFairyCaravan · 22/08/2014 13:39

Username They separated themselves into them and us when they left this country to fight for IS.

ramrod757 · 22/08/2014 13:39

They should simply be shot on sight. Job done.

LittleBearPad · 22/08/2014 13:40

xvxvxv I've reported your thread for racism

SaucyJack · 22/08/2014 13:40

Do we really want to become the sort of country that criminalises/exiles people because their political actions are not those of mainstream Britain and our government? I'm not sure we do- I think we'd be getting into the same territory as many of the other countries we claim to oppose. There are many downsides to living in a tolerant society, but I wouldn't wish to give up freedom of thought meself.

Obviously, if someone has been proven to have committed crimes overseas and/or is involved in terrorism they should be charged and imprisoned the same as any other British citizen.

ladymariner · 22/08/2014 13:40
