To not want to leave sleeping baby in the car at the park

We have a 5mth and 2 yr old. We go to a park which has a car park right next to the play park area. Yesterday DH dropped the toddler and me at the park, took the shopping home and returned. When he returned he left the baby sleeping in the car. It was in the shade with the window down a crack. We were about 10-30meters from the car and could see it at all points. Nice area, open space around the car park so you would be able to see anyone approaching. DH thinks I was being daft to go and sit in the car. I felt really uncomfortable with him being there alone though. WIBU? Would you leave your baby alone in the car in these circumstances?

Yes but I also leave him to sleep in his pram outside the house where I can't see him without looking ifyswim.

10-30 meters away in full view? I'm pretty risk adverse but even I could live quite happily with that. You could be further away if you left the pram to go and push a swing.

IMO the biggest "risk" in this scenario was taking baby out in the car in the first place. Dangerous things cars.

Thanks for the responses. Thats what i though, it's not worth the risk however small it may be. Do you mean out in the back garden/ enclosed area purple?

I wouldn't. If I walked past a car and noticed a baby asleep in the back I'd call the police. You hear horror stories about exhausted parents forgetting they have the baby in the car and leaving them inside. The horror stories always end tragically. Passers by wouldn't know that you were 30 feet away. Plus, if baby woke up you might not hear him/her cry.

I wouldn't leave a baby in a car either. It can really heat up in the car which can cause the baby to overheat and possibly die, and you wouldn't know from looking at it. For 5 months old, the infant car seats are great because you can detach them from the base and bring the sleeping baby with you.

You wouldn't first pause and ask a nearby parental couple if it was their baby?

If you can see the car - it's locked - its not too hot - the window is open a bit - then I really can't see what the problem is.

I do this all the time - DS2 sleeps in the car while I spend time with DS1 in the nearby playground. I can see the car - and pop back often in case DS2 has woken up.

If you want to play it totally safe then don't drive your children around in a car at all - to avoid the risk of injury from a car accident.

I cannot believe what I am reading. Do not leave your baby, dog, child or infirm person in a car. Have you not read of the deaths just lately. By all means leave your baby in a pram outside - but in a secure garden with a cat net over it, and periodly check on them.

I would have left the baby in those circumstances. What exactly were you worried about? We leave ours asleep on the drive. Windows and doors open if hot or sunny.

Depends on the weather I guess. I'd probably just carry the baby out in the carseat or buggy though. It doesn't sound dreadful, as long as its a cool day, but I can't really see the point. Especially if its causing you stress to leave the baby there.

Yeah, here in the US, that's illegal. For good reason. Babies die from heat exhaustion in the cars all the time. Cars are like ovens and get to dangerous temps very quickly.

But hey, you already know the risks. It's hard to miss news stories about babies dying in cars.

God I would! I really don't see the problem - if the car is locked and in full veiw what the hell is going to happen? As long as the car isn't in the sun and windows are open I do not see a problem. I would leave my dd. I also leave her outside in the pram - I don't put a cat net over her tho!!

I would do this unless it was a roasting hot day. It's not here. I assume you would be checking often.
