To wish that the new Inbetweeners movie didn't use the word 'retarded' twice.

Ok okI have a pretty puerile sense of humour but I also have a severely autistic son. I went to see it today and cringed when I heard it twice. I just thought that maybe the scriptwriters could have left that out- it was totally unnecessary and added nothing to the rants of the characters.

Or small minded and unable to perhaps think not everything is about you? volleys back

BadDog · 09/08/2014 13:34

Not small minded!

Ha, insult FAIL

chockbic · 09/08/2014 13:37

I think its OK to reclaim a word. There was the spazticus programme on channel four.

Regular people throwing words around as insults I'm less comfortable with.

MoominKoalaAndMiniMoom · 09/08/2014 13:43

Yes, because it's just lovely to sit around while people call each other 'psycho' and 'nutter', knowing that when you get home you'll be caring for someone who is ostracised from his community because of his mental health issues, because it's acceptable to see people with MH issues as 'nutters' and 'psychos', and dangers to the community.

Maybe we could stop thinking everything is about us... or maybe you could find some better insults to use?

NinjaLeprechaun · 09/08/2014 14:07

Are we supposed to be laughing at the people the word is being used to describe, or are we supposed to be laughing at the people using the word? Whatever that word happens to be.
Because I think it makes a difference.

Let's face it, racist, homophobic, disablist, sexist, prejudiced people should be laughed at. Not with, at. It's no more than they deserve.

ReputableBiscuit · 09/08/2014 14:15

Weird Al Yankovich (sp?) has a new spoof song that's a send-up of Blurred Lines. It includes a totally gratuitous use of spastic as an insult. I have no idea what goes through the mind of a grown-up who thinks that's a good thing.

dawndonnaagain · 09/08/2014 14:33

im struggling with what on earth we can use now when we just want to use a good old fashioned insult.

I'm struggling with somebody wishing to use these words as a good old fashioned insult, but then again, I have a brain and can use it, so as far as good old fashioned insults go, I try to use one that fits the bill at the time. I'm sorry you don't have a similar brain capacity, was it lack of education or just laziness?

IsChippyMintonExDirectory · 09/08/2014 15:10

Not saying things like loon and nuts? The world according to mumsnet...

LokiBear · 09/08/2014 15:15

I hate that word. I also hate the use of the word gay aa an insult. I am a teacher and regularly lecture my pupils about the use of the word. In fairness, most of then learn the word as an insult and do not realise what it actually means. Most of the kids are shocked and sorry when I explain why it is so offensive.

windchime · 09/08/2014 16:18

I don't understand why someone so easily offended would choose to pay to see the Inbetweeners film Confused

Pagwatch · 09/08/2014 16:32

Well firstly she didn't pay. And secondly wishing that people didn't use the word retard isn't the same as being easily offended , is it?

MorphineDreams · 09/08/2014 16:32

From the trailers it's quite clear it's going to be an offensive film. But the OP was willing to put up with the blatant sexism as portrayed in the trailers, but wasn't happy with the retard comments when she actually watched it. Seems a bit silly.

Pagwatch · 09/08/2014 16:51

I don't watch it, wouldn't watch it tbh. I've seen clips and I'm not interested.

I think though the op didn't start a thread asking for it to be banned. She was just expressing that hearing 'retard' felt awful and upsetting.
I think hearing a word that relates to your child is just hard. I think she was just expressing that. I can understand that without having to reach for a 'well you asked for it' even if I woukdn't watch it myself

stillenacht1 · 09/08/2014 17:08

Thanks PagSmile

Will people stop going on about the homophobia/sexism. Yes its bad but actually, and here's something thats going to get people's knickers in a twist, at least women and gay people can at least in some degree stand up for themselves, my son can't and thousands and thousands of others can't.

There I've said it.

FloozeyLoozey · 09/08/2014 17:14

You can't really knowingly go to watch a movie like the inbetweeners then complain about its content.

Greenwayslide · 09/08/2014 17:20

To be honest the age group that they are portraying would use the word retarded. In the same way teens say the word gay, they say it in an offhand manner normally targeted towards people who aren't the true victims of the word. Because of that I think the Inbetweeners use of the word is only realistic and a reflection of society.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 09/08/2014 17:35

What Pag said.

Why are you kicking the OP Morphine?

MorphineDreams · 09/08/2014 17:40

I'm not 'kicking' the OP at all, why are you centering on my posts when I've only said what others seem to be saying?

It isn't 'kicking' to say your opinion on a subject. And I've noticed you only say things like that fanjo when it regards disabilities. I know you feel strongly about such topics but don't use me as a scapegoat for your feelings on the matter.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 09/08/2014 17:45

That's not true.

I have often told people to lay off an OP when it has nothing to do with disabilities.

So don't trot that lame nonsense out please Hmm

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 09/08/2014 17:46

I will say it any time someone posts being upset about something and some heartless fecker wades in saying it was silly and their own fault anyway. For example.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 09/08/2014 17:47

Ie like now.

Mrsjayy · 09/08/2014 17:53

They are meant to be stupid and rude I guess 20yr old guys would say that to each other as an insult who said it and lets face it it was the inbetweeners where jay says minge and c lunge every other word.

MorphineDreams · 09/08/2014 17:57

Fanjo you're known to take great offence at a thread like this and wade in despite what other people are saying. I've seen it a few times and it end up almost hysterical.

Sorry my opinion doesn't suit you nor the OP. Perhaps AIBU isn't the place. I haven't been rude, I haven't broken any guidelines.

stillenacht1 · 09/08/2014 18:02

Originally I did say about the media campaign about the r word- this I guess is what saddens me most that it has fallen deaf on the ears of Ian Morris and Damon Beesley I think they are called.
