Colin Firth as Mr Darcy

I haven't watched this in years.

Good lord. Has there ever been a better - or fitter - bit of casting than this?

Much as I love Richard Armitage in North and South...

Darcy's hair alone has me going weak at the knees though the wine may have something to do with that too

Fabulous casting, but also amazing writing. I watched a documentary about Andrew Davies' adaptation and apparently there are lines likes 'darcy looks at Elizabeth like he has an enormous hard on' dotted through the script.
Can't watch it without thinking that now.

Thurlow · 11/08/2014 08:30

I don't think anything will ever quite compare to a man in breeches looking steamily at you.

Did anyone watch Strike Back? God it was rubbish.

Although I have never watched Strike Back, I am familiar with bits of it through the many clips on YT. It was one of the things I had in mine when I said that, bless him, he has done some utter tripe in the past. But N&S makes up for that.

SlightlyJadedJack · 11/08/2014 09:30

Strikeback was fabulous while RA was in it. After that? Meh! I luuuurrrrrvvvvvveeeeee John Porter.

MaudantWit · 11/08/2014 09:44

Yes, but can't one love John Porter while still thinking that the series itself was bilge?

HesterShaw · 11/08/2014 10:04

My sister is such a BBC P&P nut that she phoned once from Peckham Rye park to excitedly tell me she was stalking Miss Jane Bennet round the park aka the Harker woman. She wasn't even ashamed. I told her to stop before she got a restraining order.

Colin Firth is wonderful as Darcy. The best bit clearly is when he is watching her across the room while she helps Georgiana with her music - kind of softly, lovingly smouldering.

LucasNorthCanSpookMeAnytime · 11/08/2014 12:34

just checking if this works

Oh it certainly does :)

John Porter... hmmm... well I only watched Strike Back once and it's not something I feel the need to rewatch. He is pretty much at his most gorgeous in that but I don't feel an attraction to the character, like I do with Lucas or Guy. Although when Porter is in uniform it does very strange things to me :) DH has a shirt that I bought him that is reminiscent of one that JP wears. I accidentally referred to it once as your Porter shirt and got a raised eyebrow look! Actually, the best one was when DH needed a new coat... I've always luffed Lucas in his pea coat and thought I'd get DH one. Several months later we were watching Spooks together and Lucas came onscreen wearing said coat. DH looked surprised for a moment and then turned to me and said something like "you are SO busted" :o

emotionsecho · 11/08/2014 13:03

LucasGrin

Loved RA as your namesake in Spooks, why oh why did he have to be not what he seemed and hence depart, I so enjoyed the series with him in it.

emotionsecho · 11/08/2014 13:18

Isn't it odd how a thread about the perfect casting of Colin Firth in P&P has turned into the Richard Armitage Appreciation Society?

LucasNorthCanSpookMeAnytime · 11/08/2014 13:30

emotions, you are mistaken. Lucas did not turn out to be a baddie and jump off the roof. It is surely obvious that it was all a big misunderstanding and he was still a goodie. There was actually a giant trampoline under the ledge of the building, just out of shot. He bounced off, completely unharmed and has gone to live happily ever after with me Maya.

emotionsecho · 11/08/2014 13:39

Lucas, that sounds like a theory I can live withGrin.

We need more pictures of the sex god that is Richard Armitage, I've tried to post some but it keeps telling me they have to be 90 pixels high by 90 pixels wide and my attempts to alter them don't seem to be working!

5Foot5 · 11/08/2014 13:41

Funnily enough I was at Lyme Park on Saturday and the gift shop still has lots of items trading on the Pride and Prejudice link and I happened to comment that i was surprised that they still made such a big thing of it when it must be nearly 20 years since it was aired. Having seen this thread I am no longer surprised!

Oh and that statue is no longer in the lake thank goodness - it was a but hideous wasn't it?

Has anyone else mentioned Lost In Austen? I loved that and I am sure there is a bit where the heroine asks Mr Darcy to humour her by getting his shirt wet and she describes it as her having a little "post modern" moment - much to Darcy's bewilderment.

LucasNorthCanSpookMeAnytime · 11/08/2014 13:44

I will post some my fave pics later for you, emotions.

*5foot5, i've always wanted to watch Lost in Austen but never got round to it. Was it good?

LucasNorthCanSpookMeAnytime · 11/08/2014 13:50

Here's my all-tiem fave for you to be getting on with though :)

idlefolly · 11/08/2014 13:51

My mum still has an A4 poster of Darcy from a 1995 issue of the Radio Times on her kitchen wall, such was our love of CF!!!

(considers pulling a sickie to watch P&P all day)

And YES to Alcide and Eric in True Blood!!!

squoosh · 11/08/2014 13:53

I'm convinced Richard Armitage's 'people' (mum, granny and granny's bingo partner) must flood these boards with appreciation posts.

SenatusPopulusqueRomanorum · 11/08/2014 13:59

Since we are talking about RA, could someone help me understand why the sight of Guy of Gisborne tied up drives me wild? In RL I am as vanilla as can be - not at all into leather and bondage.

snozzlemaid · 11/08/2014 14:01

Do you think we'll add Aidan Turner to such discussions as these once we've all had the joy of seeing him as Ross Poldark next year?
Personally I'm very excited to have a new costume drama leading man to drool over. I've watched all the ones discussed here so many times, with N & S by far my favourite and most watched.

SenatusPopulusqueRomanorum · 11/08/2014 14:17

squoosh I swear I am not related to Richard Armitage in any way.

HesterShaw · 11/08/2014 14:26

I SAW AIDAN TURNER FILMING POLDARK He is gert lush.

HesterShaw · 11/08/2014 14:26

Phwoar!

QueenOfThorns · 11/08/2014 15:07

I second that phwoar! Can't believe we got to page 13 before Aidan Turner got a mention. He is the living embodiment of the perfect man I have been fantasising about since my teens! I could spend weeks just contemplating his cheekbones Grin

And we're allowed to talk about him, he was in Desperate Romantics playing Rossetti, very handsomely!

emotionsecho · 11/08/2014 15:12

Lucas you're going to have to post your all time favourite RA pic on here, for some reason my computer won't upload it (obviously just too much for even the computerGrin).

Senatus I think he has that effect on many, many, peopleWink.

sqoosh if only I was related to him in some way....

SlightlyJadedJack · 11/08/2014 15:19

Married preferably Emotionsecho! Grin

Yes I like a bit of AT, used to love him in Being Human.

Tied up Gizzy must be a universal fantasy, no?

LucasNorthCanSpookMeAnytime · 11/08/2014 15:45

Oh yeah, Gizzy tied to a tree is rather... special :)

Not sure how to post photos directly emotions, but will see if this works...
