One in three reported rapes happen when the victim has been drinking

If this link is true I am ashamed to work for the nhs. Sad

My mum used to advise I don't walk down dark streets alone after dark because I could get mugged.

Should she not warn me in this way because of 'victim blaming'¿

MoominKoalaAndMiniMoom · 05/08/2014 00:18

Waffle

This isn't advising that it 'could' happen - this is saying that it DOES happen, and implying that it partly happens because the victims are drunk.

Chiana · 05/08/2014 00:22

Thanks for the link to the petition, Snake. Signed, and have forwarded to others as well.

hiddenhome · 05/08/2014 00:23

Tsk, if those pesky women didn't get plastered then men wouldn't feel that they could take advantage of the situation.

You can't honestly expect men to control themselves Hmm

I was nine when I was raped and I definitely wasn't drunk.

WaffleWiffle · 05/08/2014 00:29

Moomin, my mum wouldn't have had the facts to hand as the nhs do.

Let's say she did, and said:

1 in 10 women who walk down dark streets alone after dark are mugged. So avoid walking down dark streets alone after dark.

[made up fact]

Is that terribly bad advice?

WhereDoAllTheCalculatorsGo · 05/08/2014 00:30

Pisses me off when women come on these threads and say 'well you are vulnerable when you've been drinking, my mum advised me to stay out of dark alleys cos I might get raped'
Bollocks. As someone said on the other thread, they might as well make a poster that says 'one out of every three rape victims watches eastenders'

It's bullshit. Three out of three rapes happen when a rapist chooses to rape someone. End of.

hiddenhome · 05/08/2014 00:40

Stay out of dark alleys
Don't drink
Always let him have the remote
Never say no if he wants sex

ffs women should have the same freedoms that men do.

Take up a martial art and kick the shit out of an attacker. That's the advice I'd give to my daughter, if I had one.

WaffleWiffle · 05/08/2014 00:46

Hiddenhome, the same advice was given to my brothers.

Mugging is not gender specific.

Is it victim blaming and as such bad advice for a mother to give?

todayisnottheday · 05/08/2014 00:47

The poster is 6 years out of date and shouldn't be on display anymore.

Cluffyflump · 05/08/2014 00:49

Hiddenhome,
Whilst I agree with your sentiment, being 'tough' doesn't always help.
A dear friend of mine was (is!) a kickboxing pro.
She escaped with her life. She froze.
The police told her that (freezing) was why she survived.
Not many people can fist fight a knife.

hiddenhome · 05/08/2014 00:52

I know mugging isn't gender specific which is why I send ds2 to Taekwondo and self defence.

hiddenhome · 05/08/2014 00:55

Better just remain indoors then and leave the men to rape the careless and pissed.

Chiana · 05/08/2014 00:57

And dont forget to cross your fingers and hope you're not raped by someone you trust and let into your home.

omletta · 05/08/2014 01:00

Rape always happens because a rapist chooses to rape. End.

WaffleWiffle · 05/08/2014 01:07

Why is risk management so bad?

Do you refuse to manage risks in all aspects of your / your DC lives, or just in relation to rape?

Chiana · 05/08/2014 02:17

WaffleWiffle, personal question here, you can of course decline to answer. Are you a rape survivor yourself?

StoneTheFlamingCrows · 05/08/2014 06:08

Today - I was hoping that may be the case.

OP posts:
PlumpPartridge · 05/08/2014 06:22

It's not actually managing the risk though, waffle. According to that poster, 2/3 rapes occur when the victim is sober. Therefore I am statistically less likely to be raped when i am drunk.

QED and all that Hmm

PlumpPartridge · 05/08/2014 06:31

Also, I think that statistically you are more likely to raped by someone you know - either a friend or close family member. No-one ever makes a poster about that.

Actually I can see why. The lack of control makes people uncomfortable and they want to be able to pick out the thing that victims did 'wrong', to ensure that they can avoid it happening to themselves. Psychologically understandable, but a bit bloody harsh on the victim. The truth is, it's not something you can control (like a lot of life).

SlightlyJadedJack · 05/08/2014 06:43

PlumpPartridge says exactly what I was just thinking.

hiddenhome · 05/08/2014 10:23

Spot on PP

MaidOfStars · 05/08/2014 10:24

This is an alcohol awareness campaign that uses the fear of rape as a means to stop people drinking.

The threat of rape as a weapon to modify behaviour....utterly horrific.
