I'm just so pissed off with the double standards!

I went into primark and there is a whole wall dedicated to "hide your fat" type underware Shock
and I dont just mean Spanx and the like, there were corset type tops, underware leggings to stop the wobble as you walk, a "no more back fat" vest - I shit you not, that's what it said on the label!! Rows and rows of the same type of fat hiding underware in all different styles and colours.

In comparison the men's underware department consisted of three rails, boxer shorts, briefs, socks and vests Hmm. Its the same in most shops now (although I was pretty shocked and impressed with such a vast range of products of this style)

In summer all over the tv/magazines its advertising how to get a great bikini body, fab abs, summer holiday slim down etc.

Winter its the little black dress diet for the office Xmas party!! -AIMED ONLY AT WOMEN

Aibu to just think FUCK OFF ALREADY?!
I realise this is nothing new BTW. I just had a realisation that things are only gonna get worse and I feel sad that this is the message that my dds are going to get brought up around

As others have pointed out, men tend to buy less shape ware.

A good company makes products they can sell, not products that would be desirable from a political pov.

MrsJossNaylor · 23/07/2014 20:58

Yabu to think it's getting "worse." Being slum has always been the ideal. Look at Pans People in old episodes of TOTP. They are TINY. It's just that women are getting fatter.

Vanity sizing plays a part. I fit in a size 10 in most shops. Yet when my MIL tried to lend me one f her size 10 dresses from the 60s, to wear to a party, it was several inches away from even fastening up.

Even my size 12 jeans from the 90s are smaller than my current size 10 jeans. The nation is getting fatter, yet women are putting pressure on each other to achieve a slim "ideal."

No wonder Spanx and the likes are doing a roaring trade. People want to hide their flabby bits, yet don't want to do the exercise and diet required to eradicate said flabby bits. Hence the "quick fix" option.

FWIW, I think men are under pressure to conform to a physical ideal as well. But there's just not a call for Spanx under trousers and shirts, hence no male equivalent.

Plus, supply and demand. It is a vicious circle...patriarchal society means women are more pressured about their looks. There is more demand, so more products in shops. Seeing more products in your shop and seeing other women hiding their weight or being told being overweight makes them a Bad Person means they will buy those products. And so it goes on.

melissa83 · 23/07/2014 21:02

Really vfxdad? Not for any men I know. The very few that have beer bellys get called nick names and wound up constantly. I think men are a lot more harsh in that area.

MaidOfStars · 23/07/2014 21:02

dons flameproof hat and sticks this in for devil's advocate

Women shouldn't be fat. No more than men should be fat.

If it's a debate about the intrinsic sexism in being fat (think it is), then stop buying Spanx, or Primarni versions of.

Shocked and horrified at suddenly realising this. YABU.

VampireSquid · 23/07/2014 21:06

I agree about women shouldn't be fat, nor men. It's unhealthy and we are growing fatter as a society. It damages our own children and many people I know and love are overweight and face health risks as a result. Plus with a widespread unawareness of some fats, additives and lack of exercise, people of all weights are facing health problems due to their diet and inactivity, all the people most at risk will be overweight. There's an obesity epidemic and all the whole love your body stuff is great, we should all love our body enough to try and keep it as healthy as possible, not just being fine with how you look imo.

bauhausfan · 23/07/2014 21:07

I am fat. I am also pretty, nice and intelligent. Men fancy me - even a couple (recently) with slim wives. Shove that in your judgey pants.

CombineBananaFister · 23/07/2014 21:09

It's not just that you shouldn't be fat, it's that it's become the WORST thing to be. Not spiteful or mean or ungenerous or lacking empathy but overweight.
Generally speaking slimmer is healthier but being fat does not mean you are unworthy, stupid or fucking horrible or deserve the vitriol that is freely dished out about you.
Men do not get the same, there is a healthier attitude towards mens sizes whilst being fit and healthy

lifeissweet · 23/07/2014 21:12

This is not about being fat and how we shouldn't be overweight or be ok about being overweight.

It's about women being sold underwear to make them look 'perfect'.

And as a PP pointed out above, she is a size 10 and wears these garments under some clothes to 'look better'. Who's better? What's to say having no lumps and bumps whatsoever is 'better'? It is just how some of us are made.

YABU - clothes look so much better on you if you're slim, who wants to see rolls of fat under a t.shirt? - being overweight is not something to be proud of I'm sorry. & I agree with the above poster who said men ( generally speaking ) don't care as much, that's true in my experience.

rainbowfeet · 23/07/2014 21:15

Primark shape wear is fab value for money though!! Confused

Don't stop me being fat just stops it all wobbling around!!

Sorry not helping your post

CatKisser · 23/07/2014 21:18

It's not just that you shouldn't be fat, it's that it's become the WORST thing to be. Not spiteful or mean or ungenerous or lacking empathy but overweight.

I absolutely agree with this, Combine.

VampireSquid · 23/07/2014 21:19

I agree combine it doesn't matter what you look like and although I want people to be healthy that's their business! ultimately. Are they friendly? Funny? Generous? Their personality means so much more and what they do as a result of that, than things like weight.

CaptainTrollolololol · 23/07/2014 21:20

I agree, combine. You can be the kindest, happiest, friendliest, politest person in the world and your weight and/or size will still be the thing you are judged on (even beyond first impressions) by the majority.

WorraLiberty · 23/07/2014 21:21

To be totally honest, most men and women I know would prefer not to be fat.

The men I know would rather have a six pack than a beer belly and the women I know would rather have a flat stomach than a fat one.

This is why they buy clothes and underwear that help them achieve that look

I'm sure a lot of men are jealous that there is so much more for women to choose from.

So it's not that the clothes industry says "Women must not be fat"

It's jut selling to the majority of its customers who actually don't want to be fat.

museumum · 23/07/2014 21:21

It's interesting. I am pretty sure that a few years ago it would have been more embarrassing to be seen in spanks than to be seen to be a bit bulgy. I don't know when "shapewear" became more acceptable. I think the recent thing is the "faking it" - now it's ok, even desired, to have fake nails, fake boobs, fake tan, shapewear, Botox, fillers. All things people used to pretend they weren't faking...

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 23/07/2014 21:22

"Women shouldnt be fat"

Women should be whatever they want tbh.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 23/07/2014 21:23

"Who wants to see rolls of fat under a t.shirt? "

Who cares what other people have under their tshirts?

Slightly shallow

MagicMojito · 23/07/2014 21:26

I agree that women are the main culprits for fat shameing, however when everything surrounding us is telling us that it IS something to be ashamed of, is it really any wonder that's what we believe?!

I'm terrible for being critical of my weight, I have in the past worn and bought into these products. I'm going to have to really make an effort to stop, especially to not do it in front of dds.

bau my judgey pants? Confused

UncleT · 23/07/2014 21:26

That's capitalism, I'm afraid. Whether we agree with the sentiments, companies focus their resources on the markets that provide them with the best returns and growth.

MaidOfStars · 23/07/2014 21:27

Women should be whatever they want tbh

Fine. See you on the pathology table..,

WorraLiberty · 23/07/2014 21:28

I meant to say, I do agree with you OP about all the bikini diets/little black dress for the Xmas party diets only being aimed at women...that winds me right up.

But I disagree with your thread title

I'm quite sure there are many men who would love to wear clothes that made their stomachs look flatter, if only they were out there and their mates wore them too.
